Chapter 6 - The Price of the Truth

Elena stared at the photograph.

Diego was gone.

Again.

This time she knew exactly why.

Victor wanted the master drive.

“I'm not trading it.”

Isabella looked at her daughter.

“No one asked you to.”

“He'll kill Diego.”

Isabella's expression hardened.

“And Diego nearly killed you.”

Elena flinched.

Her mother wasn't wrong.

But Elena couldn't deliberately allow another human being to die.

Not even Diego.

Especially not the father of her child.

Saving him did not mean forgiving him.

She needed to remember that.

Federal agents secured the family at Gabriel's headquarters.

The evidence was duplicated and transmitted to investigators.

Victor could no longer erase it by destroying one drive.

That changed everything.

Elena wrote back:

Where?

The answer came immediately.

THE MANSION. MIDNIGHT.

Her mansion.

The place where the nightmare had begun.

Gabriel refused.

Isabella refused.

Daniel refused.

Elena listened.

Then she said:

“I'm going.”

Gabriel stood.

“No.”

“We have federal agents.”

“You're pregnant.”

“I know.”

“He wants you.”

“I know.”

“You almost lost your child yesterday.”

Elena's voice hardened.

“And I am done letting men decide what I can survive.”

Silence.

Isabella looked at Gabriel.

Then at Elena.

A small smile appeared.

“She gets that from me.”

The operation was planned carefully.

Elena would enter wearing a transmitter.

Agents would surround the property.

The drive she carried would be fake.

At 11:58 p.m., Elena walked through the same patio where Diego had sprayed her.

The hose was still coiled beside the wall.

For a second, she couldn't move.

Memory hit her.

Water.

Cold.

Diego's voice.

Sign it.

Her hand moved to her belly.

Her daughter kicked.

Elena whispered:

“We're going home after this.”

The patio doors opened.

Victor Hawthorne stood inside.

Elegant.

Calm.

Seventy years old.

Silver hair.

Expensive suit.

The grandfatherly smile Elena had known since childhood.

“Sweet Elena.”

She hated hearing her name in his voice.

“Where is Diego?”

“Still worried about him?”

“I didn't say I forgave him.”

Victor smiled.

“Good distinction.”

“Where is he?”

Victor gestured.

Two men brought Diego into the room.

His hands were bound.

His face bruised.

He saw Elena and looked horrified.

“You shouldn't be here.”

Victor laughed.

“That's touching.”

Elena held up the drive.

“Let him go.”

“First, the drive.”

“No.”

Victor's smile faded.

“You've become difficult.”

“My mother said the same thing.”

That struck him.

“You found Isabella.”

Elena smiled slightly.

Victor realized his mistake.

If Elena had found Isabella, others probably had the evidence.

“You already copied it.”

“Yes.”

Victor's calm finally broke.

“You stupid girl.”

Diego moved suddenly.

He slammed his shoulder into one captor.

Chaos erupted.

Elena dropped.

Agents stormed the entrances.

Victor ran.

Daniel intercepted him near the patio.

Richard appeared from an interior hallway with a weapon.

Gabriel shouted.

Marcus tackled Richard before he could reach Elena.

Within seconds, the room filled with agents.

Victor was handcuffed.

Richard was pinned to the floor.

Diego remained kneeling.

Elena stood slowly.

He looked at her.

“You came.”

“I didn't come for our marriage.”

“I know.”

“I came because I'm not becoming the kind of person you became.”

Diego lowered his head.

Federal agents took him into custody as well.

He didn't resist.

Before leaving, he looked at Elena's belly.

“Is she okay?”

“Yes.”

His eyes closed with relief.

“Good.”

Elena turned away.

The investigation exploded publicly over the following weeks.

Victor Hawthorne was charged in connection with financial crimes, conspiracy, coercion, and multiple acts tied to the old network.

Richard faced even more.

Marcus agreed to testify.

Isabella emerged publicly after thirteen years.

The media frenzy was enormous.

But Elena avoided it.

She focused on her baby.

And on rebuilding herself.

Diego cooperated fully.

His testimony helped investigators dismantle the remaining network.

But cooperation did not erase what he had done.

Elena filed for divorce.

The coerced property agreement was voided.

The mansion remained hers.

One afternoon, Diego requested permission to speak with her.

Elena agreed only with her attorney present.

He looked different.

No expensive coat.

No arrogance.

Just a tired man confronting the ruins of his choices.

“I loved you,” he said.

Elena looked at him.

“I believe you.”

His eyes widened.

“But love doesn't make what you did less abusive.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“You chose fear over protecting me.”

“Yes.”

“You chose property over our daughter.”

His face crumpled.

“Yes.”

“I will never pretend that didn't happen.”

“I don't expect you to.”

Diego slid an envelope across the table.

“What is this?”

“Everything I know about the remaining accounts.”

“You gave this to investigators?”

“Yes. That's your copy.”

Elena didn't touch it.

Diego stood.

“I don't deserve another chance with you.”

“No.”

“But someday, if I'm legally allowed, I would like our daughter to know I tried to become better than the man she almost lost that day.”

Elena didn't promise anything.

She simply said:

“That will depend on what you do next.”

Diego nodded.

Then he left.

Elena watched through the window.

For the first time since their marriage began, Diego walked away without controlling what happened afterward.

Three weeks later, Elena received a call from Daniel.

They had discovered one final account.

It wasn't Victor's.

It wasn't Richard's.

It wasn't Diego's.

The account had transferred money to the hospital on the night of Isabella's supposed death.

Millions.

Elena drove to Gabriel's house.

Her mother and father were together in the study.

She placed the bank record on the desk.

Isabella read it.

Her face changed.

“You know this account.”

Isabella didn't answer.

“Mom?”

Gabriel looked at her.

Isabella slowly sat down.

“Elena, there is one last thing I never told you.”

“What?”

Isabella looked toward the doorway.

Someone had entered the house.

Footsteps approached the study.

Marcus appeared.

But he wasn't alone.

Behind him stood an elderly woman Elena had never seen before.

May you like

Isabella whispered one word.

“Mother.”
