Chapter 2 - The Man Inside the House

By the time paramedics reached Elena, Diego was shouting that the entire incident had been misunderstood.
Nobody listened.
Gabriel's private security team arrived seconds behind the ambulance.
Elena was wrapped in thermal blankets and placed carefully onto a stretcher. Her first question was about the baby.
“Heartbeat is strong,” the paramedic assured her.
She closed her eyes.
Only then did she allow herself to breathe.
Diego attempted to approach.
Two security officers blocked him.
“That's my wife.”
“Stay back.”
“She needs me.”
Elena opened her eyes.
“No.”
One word.
Quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Diego stopped.
Elena looked directly at him.
“I don't need you.”
Something passed across his face.
Anger.
Humiliation.
Maybe even fear.
Vanessa stood several yards away, pale and silent.
A county deputy arrived and began asking questions.
Diego immediately transformed.
His voice softened.
His shoulders relaxed.
He became the charming man Elena had married.
“My wife and I had an argument. She became emotional. The hose was already running. She slipped.”
Elena almost couldn't believe it.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“He's lying.”
Diego turned.
Vanessa stared at the ground.
“He locked her outside.”
“Vanessa.”
“He made her sign the document.”
“Shut up.”
“He sprayed her.”
“Shut your mouth!”
Every camera caught it.
The deputy stepped between them.
Gabriel arrived twenty-two minutes later.
He didn't run toward Diego.
He didn't threaten him.
He walked directly to Elena.
Her stretcher had not yet been loaded.
Gabriel touched her face.
His hands trembled.
“Dad.”
“I'm here.”
“The baby—”
“I know. They told me.”
Elena saw tears in his eyes.
Her father rarely cried.
Not even at her mother's funeral.
“I thought I could handle him,” Elena whispered.
Gabriel shook his head.
“You don't have to handle him anymore.”
Diego approached.
“Gabriel, this is being blown completely out of proportion.”
Gabriel turned.
The expression on his face silenced everyone.
“Do not speak to me.”
“She's my wife.”
“No. She's my daughter.”
“You don't control our marriage.”
Gabriel took one step closer.
“And you don't own her.”
Diego's jaw tightened.
“This is a private marital dispute.”
“You committed your private marital dispute in front of seventeen cameras.”
Diego went still.
Gabriel continued.
“Four record audio.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Diego glanced toward the mansion.
Gabriel noticed.
“You're wondering whether you can erase it.”
“I wasn't—”
“You can't.”
Diego said nothing.
“Everything was transmitted off-site the moment Elena's bracelet triggered.”
That was when Diego finally understood.
The evidence wasn't inside the mansion.
Destroying cameras wouldn't matter.
Taking Elena's phone wouldn't matter.
The recording already existed elsewhere.
The paramedics loaded Elena into the ambulance.
Gabriel climbed inside with her.
Before the doors closed, he looked toward his security director, Daniel Reed.
Daniel understood the silent instruction.
Find the person inside the house.
At the hospital, Elena was treated for hypothermia, dehydration, bruising, and severe stress.
Her daughter remained stable.
Doctors wanted to monitor her overnight.
Gabriel never left.
Around midnight, Elena woke and found him sitting beside the window.
“You knew something was wrong with Diego.”
It wasn't a question.
Gabriel looked at her.
“I suspected.”
“For how long?”
“Several months.”
“And you didn't tell me?”
“I didn't know enough.”
“That's not an answer.”
Gabriel sighed.
“Elena, your husband began making inquiries about assets that weren't his.”
She stared at him.
“What inquiries?”
“Your trust. Your mother's properties. Voting shares you inherited. Insurance policies.”
Her stomach tightened.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't want to accuse your husband without proof.”
“You gave me the bracelet.”
“Yes.”
“Because of him?”
Gabriel hesitated.
“Partly.”
Elena looked away.
Her marriage suddenly felt like a room filled with hidden doors.
“What was the other reason?”
Gabriel stood.
“There is something you need to understand about the document Diego forced you to sign.”
“He wanted the house.”
“More than the house.”
Gabriel placed a tablet beside her.
The scanned contract appeared.
Mercury Ridge Holdings.
“Do you recognize that company?” he asked.
“No.”
“I do.”
Gabriel explained that Mercury Ridge had been connected to a network of shell companies investigated years earlier for fraud, coercive acquisitions, and laundering stolen corporate assets.
No convictions had resulted.
The organization had vanished.
Until now.
Elena looked at Diego's signature.
“You think he's part of it?”
“I think Diego didn't suddenly decide he wanted your property.”
Gabriel enlarged another section.
“I think someone recruited him.”
A knock interrupted them.
Daniel entered.
His expression immediately worried Gabriel.
“Did you find him?”
“No.”
Elena frowned.
“Find who?”
Gabriel looked at Daniel.
Daniel reluctantly answered.
“There was another person inside your house during the incident.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“Who?”
“We don't know yet.”
Gabriel did.
But he wasn't ready to say it.
Daniel placed a photograph on the table.
Security footage.
A man entering Elena's office.
His face was partially visible.
Elena stared.
Something about him seemed familiar.
“Who is he?”
Gabriel remained silent.
“Dad?”
“He worked for me.”
“When?”
“Twelve years ago.”
“What happened to him?”
“He died.”
Elena looked again.
“That man doesn't look dead.”
“No.”
Gabriel picked up the photograph.
“His name is Marcus Vale.”
Elena had heard that name.
Once.
Years ago.
Her mother had said it during an argument with Gabriel.
Elena had been seventeen.
She remembered standing upstairs and hearing her parents shouting.
Marcus knows too much.
Those exact words.
Then her mother's accident happened three weeks later.
Elena stared at her father.
“Marcus knew Mom.”
Gabriel's face changed.
“Yes.”
“How?”
Before he could answer, Elena's phone vibrated.
It had been recovered from Diego's locked office and returned by police.
Unknown number.
One message.
Elena opened it.
A photograph appeared.
Her mother.
Alive.
Standing beside Marcus Vale.
The timestamp was dated two days before her mother's fatal accident.
Underneath was one sentence.
YOUR HUSBAND IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
Elena looked at Gabriel.
Then another message arrived.
This one contained an address.
May you like
And four words.
ASK YOUR FATHER WHY.
