Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Elena couldn't stop staring at the photograph.

Her mother was alive one day after her reported death.

Same hair.

Same wedding ring.

Same small scar near her eyebrow.

Gabriel looked as if someone had struck him.

“I saw her body.”

“Are you sure?”

He didn't answer immediately.

The accident had been severe.

The identification had relied partly on personal belongings and dental records.

Records that could have been altered.

Daniel searched the locker.

Behind the envelope was another object.

A prepaid phone.

It rang.

Everyone froze.

Daniel answered on speaker.

A woman's voice said:

“Elena?”

Elena stopped breathing.

She knew that voice.

Memory knew it before logic did.

Her mother.

“Elena, if you're there, don't say my name.”

Gabriel gripped the locker door.

The woman continued.

“Richard knows you found the storage unit. He'll expect you to follow the obvious trail.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Mom?”

Silence.

Then:

“My baby.”

Gabriel turned away.

Elena couldn't speak.

For thirteen years, she had mourned this woman.

Now she was listening to her breathe.

“Where are you?”

“Not somewhere safe.”

“Why did you leave?”

“I didn't.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“What happened?”

“I discovered Richard's network. Marcus tried to help me expose it. Richard arranged the accident.”

Gabriel looked sick.

“They told me Gabriel had been compromised.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“Isabella.”

Silence.

“Gabriel?”

His voice broke.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I thought you betrayed me.”

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Thirteen years of grief sat between them.

Then Isabella said:

“Richard wanted Elena's inheritance because I placed evidence inside the trust.”

Elena frowned.

“Evidence?”

“Financial records. Names. Transactions. Enough to destroy the entire network.”

“Where?”

“You already have the key.”

Elena looked at the silver key.

“417?”

“No. The other key.”

Elena didn't understand.

Then she remembered.

Her mother's necklace.

Elena had worn it since the funeral.

A small silver pendant shaped like a key.

She touched it.

Gabriel stared.

“Isabella…”

“I knew nobody would search our daughter.”

Elena removed the necklace.

There was a microscopic storage chip embedded inside.

Daniel examined it.

“My God.”

Isabella continued.

“Do not connect it to any networked computer. Richard has people everywhere.”

“Where are you?”

“I'll contact you.”

“Mom, don't hang up.”

“I have to.”

“Please.”

“Elena.”

Her mother paused.

“I have watched you from a distance for years.”

Tears streamed down Elena's face.

“I watched your graduation. Your wedding.”

Elena almost dropped the phone.

“You knew about Diego?”

“Too late.”

“Why didn't you come back?”

“Because every person who helped me disappeared.”

The line crackled.

“I thought staying dead would keep you alive.”

Then Isabella whispered:

“I was wrong.”

The call ended.

Daniel took the pendant to an isolated computer.

The chip contained thousands of records.

Richard's network extended across corporations, banks, and government contractors.

But one file mattered most.

MASTER.

Password protected.

A clue appeared.

ELENA'S FIRST WORD.

Gabriel smiled through tears.

“Light.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“Your first word was light.”

The password worked.

The master file opened.

Richard wasn't the leader.

He was one branch.

Above him appeared another name.

VICTOR HAWTHORNE.

A billionaire investor and longtime board member of Morales Global.

The fourth person in the photograph.

The man who had publicly comforted Gabriel after Isabella's death.

The man who had attended Elena's wedding.

The man who currently controlled enough board votes to challenge Gabriel.

Elena understood.

Victor had spent thirteen years positioning himself.

Her shares were the final obstacle.

And Diego had been his tool.

Daniel immediately copied the evidence to multiple secured drives.

Gabriel contacted federal investigators.

But before they could leave, the station lights went out.

Daniel drew his weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

Footsteps echoed.

Gabriel pulled Elena toward the wall.

Someone approached.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“Elena.”

Marcus Vale stepped from the darkness.

Alive.

Older.

Scarred.

But alive.

“Your mother sent me.”

Elena stared at him.

“Where is she?”

Marcus looked behind him.

“Coming.”

Another figure appeared.

A woman.

Gray threaded through her dark hair.

Her face had aged.

But Elena knew her instantly.

“Mom.”

Isabella stopped.

For one second, neither moved.

Then Elena crossed the distance.

Her mother wrapped both arms around her.

Elena cried against her shoulder like a child.

Gabriel remained several feet away.

Isabella looked at him.

Years of misunderstanding passed silently between them.

Then she held out one hand.

Gabriel took it.

They stood together around Elena.

Not healed.

Not yet.

But together.

Marcus suddenly looked toward the station entrance.

“We have to move.”

“Why?”

“They followed Isabella.”

Daniel checked the cameras.

Several black vehicles had stopped outside.

Men emerged.

Marcus grabbed Elena's arm.

“There is another exit.”

They hurried through the service corridor.

Elena's phone vibrated.

A message.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

Congratulations on finding your mother.

A second message arrived.

But you forgot about your husband.

Attached was a live photograph.

Diego's hospital bed was empty.

Blood stained the sheets.

May you like

And beneath the photograph were three words.

BRING THE DRIVE.
