Chapter 9 - The Grave That Held the Wrong Child

Federal agents wanted Ethan to wait.

He refused.

Marcus convinced him to wear a wire.

Elena insisted on coming.

"No."

"She's my sister."

"Which is exactly why you're staying."

"Stop deciding what I can survive."

Ethan stared at her.

Then nodded.

At the cemetery, Victor stood beneath the stone angel beside Rachel's grave.

Lily wasn't visible.

Ethan carried the files.

"Where is she?"

Victor smiled.

"Still impatient."

"You murdered Rachel."

Victor's smile faded.

"The crash was supposed to frighten her."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No. I expect you to understand that your family created this long before I did."

Victor blamed Thomas Carter.

Westbridge had begun as a method for hiding embarrassing family situations among wealthy clients.

Secret births.

Private adoptions.

Quiet payments.

Victor turned the system into a criminal enterprise.

Rachel discovered it.

"She was going to expose you."

"She was going to destroy hundreds of families."

"Families built on lies."

Victor shrugged.

"Most families are."

Ethan held up the drive.

"Lily."

Victor gestured toward the mausoleum.

The door opened.

Lily stepped out.

Nine years old.

Blonde hair.

Thin.

Terrified.

Alive.

Ethan forgot every plan.

Every agent.

Every instruction.

"Lily."

She stared at him.

"Daddy?"

He took one step.

Victor raised a gun.

"Don't."

Ethan stopped.

Lily cried.

Elena felt her own tears fall.

Her little sister.

Real.

Alive.

Victor demanded the drive.

Ethan threw it.

Victor bent slightly.

Marcus's team moved.

Gunfire erupted.

Elena ran toward Lily.

Victor grabbed the girl.

Ethan tackled him.

The gun slid across stone.

Marcus reached it first.

Seconds later Victor was pinned to the ground.

Ethan didn't watch.

He crawled toward Lily.

She stood frozen.

Three years had passed.

He had imagined this moment thousands of times.

In every version, Lily ran into his arms.

Reality was more fragile.

"Hi, bug," Ethan whispered.

Lily's lip trembled.

Only he had called her that.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah."

"Did you think I died?"

Ethan cried.

"Yes."

"Claire said you did."

"I'm sorry."

"You didn't leave me?"

"Never."

Lily moved first.

She ran.

Ethan caught her.

The sound that came from him wasn't quite a sob.

It was three years of grief leaving his body at once.

Elena turned away, crying.

Then Lily saw her.

She stared.

"Ellie?"

Elena froze.

Rachel had told her.

Lily pulled away from Ethan.

"You're my sister."

Elena knelt.

"Yes."

Lily hugged her.

And for one impossible minute, everything seemed finished.

It wasn't.

Federal investigators searched the mausoleum.

Behind Rachel's crypt they found a metal case.

Inside were documents Victor had hidden.

One was the original accident investigation.

The brakes on Rachel's vehicle had been tampered with.

Another contained payment authorization.

Victor had paid the mechanic.

But the order hadn't originated from Victor.

Someone else had authorized it.

Using an executive code.

Ethan recognized the code.

Daniel's.

He stared at his brother.

Daniel went pale.

"I didn't do this."

The agent turned the page.

There was Daniel's electronic signature.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

Make sure Rachel never reaches Ethan.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Lily tightened her hand around her father's.

Daniel whispered, "Someone forged it."

Then an agent emerged from the mausoleum holding a second document.

"Mr. Carter, there's something else."

He handed it to Ethan.

It was a life-insurance amendment signed forty-eight hours before the crash.

The beneficiary wasn't Ethan.

May you like

It wasn't Lily.

It was Elena Salgado.
