Chapter 8 - The Letters Lily Wrote

Claire survived.
The bullet struck her shoulder.
Marcus's team chased the shooter but found only an abandoned vehicle.
Inside was a Carter Foundation access badge.
Victor Shaw's photograph.
The evidence was becoming impossible to dismiss.
Yet Lily remained missing.
At the hospital, Claire finally explained.
She had moved Lily seven times in three years.
Each time Shaw came close.
Two weeks earlier, Claire believed she'd found permanent safety with a retired teacher named Margaret Wells.
Then Claire discovered someone had accessed Lily's records.
She moved again.
Three days ago, Lily disappeared.
"Disappeared?" Ethan said.
"She left me a note."
Claire handed it over.
I went to find Daddy.
Ethan's face collapsed.
"She was trying to find me?"
Claire nodded.
"She had begun remembering the mansion."
Elena read Lily's letters while Ethan couldn't.
In one, Lily described a dream about her bedroom.
In another, she remembered her father's pancakes being terrible.
Ethan laughed once through tears.
"I burned them every time."
One letter mentioned a secret place.
Daddy's star room.
Ethan stopped.
"What?"
"Star room," Elena repeated.
Ethan stood.
"The observatory."
The mansion had a small rooftop observatory Ethan hadn't entered since Rachel died.
They returned immediately.
Dust covered everything.
Lily had loved the telescope.
On the wall, Ethan found tiny pencil marks.
A childhood code he had invented with her.
Stars represented letters.
He translated.
UNDER MOMMY'S PIANO.
Downstairs, Rachel's grand piano had remained untouched for three years.
Beneath it, taped behind a support beam, was a key.
It opened a deposit box.
Inside they found Rachel's final evidence.
Bank transfers.
Names.
Westbridge patients.
Payments to Shaw.
And photographs of children whose identities had been changed.
Rachel hadn't merely uncovered fraud.
She had uncovered an illegal guardianship network.
Shaw had been using vulnerable children as financial instruments through fraudulent trusts and charitable accounts.
Lily had overheard him threatening Rachel.
The crash silenced Rachel.
But Lily survived.
That made her a witness.
"That's why he wants her," Elena said.
Ethan nodded.
Marcus called federal authorities.
For the first time, Ethan agreed.
No more private handling.
No more family secrecy.
Everything went to investigators.
Then Elena found a final envelope.
For Ethan.
Inside was Rachel's wedding ring.
Ethan stared.
His own ring still rested in his pocket—the one Elena had picked up during his test.
Rachel had apparently removed hers before the accident and hidden it.
Her letter explained why.
Ethan,
If I fail, don't let grief turn you into someone Lily wouldn't recognize.
Trust people again.
Especially when it frightens you.
Ethan stopped reading.
Elena quietly finished the final line.
And if you meet Elena before I can bring her home, tell her I was sorry I waited so long.
Elena cried.
Not loudly.
Ethan reached for her hand.
This time neither pretended it meant nothing.
That night, Carmen came to the mansion for safety.
Ethan gave her the best guest room.
Elena noticed how carefully he adjusted Carmen's oxygen tubing.
"You don't know what you're doing," she said.
"No."
"You're putting it backward."
"I knew that."
"You absolutely didn't."
A faint smile appeared.
It was the first genuine smile Elena had seen on his face.
Then the doorbell rang.
Marcus checked the camera.
No one.
On the porch sat a backpack.
Pink.
Ethan recognized it immediately.
Lily's.
Inside was a stuffed fox.
Two shirts.
A child's notebook.
And a phone.
The phone rang.
Ethan answered.
"Lily?"
Silence.
Then breathing.
A tiny voice.
"Daddy?"
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Lily."
Elena covered her mouth.
Ethan's knees nearly gave way.
"Baby, where are you?"
"I'm scared."
"I'm coming. Tell me where."
"I don't know."
"Look around."
"It's dark."
"Are you alone?"
A pause.
"No."
Ethan's face changed.
"Who is with you?"
Lily whispered, "Uncle Victor."
Then a man's voice came onto the line.
"Ethan."
Victor Shaw.
"If you want your daughter alive, bring Rachel's files."
The call ended.
A location arrived seconds later.
Ethan opened it.
It was the one place he never expected.
May you like
The Carter family cemetery.
And Victor was waiting beside Rachel's grave.
