Chapter 12 - The Man Ethan Trusted

Ethan looked at Marcus.
Marcus looked at the photograph.
"That's not me."
Sofia nodded.
"I know."
She enlarged the image.
The man resembled Marcus from a distance.
But the face was wrong.
A disguise.
Someone wanted Ethan to distrust his security chief.
Sofia explained that Samuel specialized in manipulation.
He created evidence.
Changed identities.
Made people doubt one another.
"Why?"
"Control."
Sofia had been raised by Samuel under another name.
He told her Rachel abandoned her.
Years later, Sofia discovered the truth.
She began investigating.
That led her to Lily.
"Did you help Claire?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you contact me?"
"Because I didn't know whether you were part of it."
Ethan accepted that answer more easily than he would have a week earlier.
Trust, he was learning, wasn't certainty.
It was a decision made without certainty.
Sofia revealed Samuel's goal.
Rachel's evidence could expose decades of illegal adoptions.
But Samuel believed Lily knew where Rachel kept a master ledger.
"Lily was six."
"Children remember strange things."
Ethan went home immediately.
Lily was safe.
She ran into his arms.
Then saw Sofia.
Her eyes widened.
"Aunt Sofie!"
Elena looked at her twin.
"You've met."
Sofia smiled sadly.
"Many times."
Lily had known Elena existed because Sofia showed her photographs.
The family reunion was awkward, painful, extraordinary.
Carmen held Sofia and cried for the child she had spent decades believing dead.
Then Lily mentioned something.
"Grandpa Sam said Mommy hid the names in her song."
Ethan crouched.
"What song?"
"The one she played for me."
Rachel's piano.
Lily played a simple melody.
Ethan remembered it.
Rachel had composed it.
Elena examined the sheet music.
Certain notes were circled.
Letters.
Coordinates.
A storage facility.
Inside unit 317 they found boxes.
Adoption records.
Financial documents.
Photographs.
Enough evidence to destroy Westbridge's network.
But the final box was empty.
A note sat inside.
THANK YOU FOR FINDING IT FOR ME.
The door slammed.
Gas began entering through a vent.
Ethan grabbed Lily.
Marcus smashed the lock.
They escaped seconds before the unit filled.
Samuel had followed them.
Federal agents locked down the facility.
No Samuel.
But surveillance captured him leaving.
For the first time they had a clear current image.
Seventy-two.
White hair.
Thin.
Unremarkable.
A man capable of disappearing because nobody would look twice.
Then Lily pointed at the screen.
"I know him."
Ethan knelt.
"From where?"
"He came to Claire's house."
"When?"
"Lots of times."
Everyone went silent.
"What did Claire call him?"
Lily thought.
"Doctor Sam."
Ethan felt sick.
Samuel hadn't been hunting Lily.
He had known where she was all along.
"Why didn't he take you?"
Lily shrugged.
"He said I had to remember first."
"Remember what?"
Lily's face changed.
"The night Mommy crashed."
She remembered waking briefly in the car.
Rachel was alive.
Someone approached.
Rachel spoke to him.
Not Victor.
Samuel.
Lily remembered her mother giving Samuel something.
A necklace.
Elena touched her throat.
She had worn Carmen's old necklace her entire life.
A small silver locket.
Carmen stared.
"Elena."
"What?"
"Open it."
"I have."
"No. The back."
There was a hidden seam.
Ethan used a thin blade.
The locket opened a second time.
Inside was a microfilm strip.
Names.
Hundreds.
And one handwritten entry.
ELENA SALGADO — ORIGINAL IDENTITY SEALED BY S.V.
Below it was another.
SOFIA — LOCATION UNKNOWN.
Then a third entry.
RACHEL CARTER — SUBJECT NOT BIOLOGICAL CHILD OF SAMUEL VOSS.
Elena stared.
"If Rachel wasn't Samuel's daughter..."
Sofia finished.
"Then who was?"
Carmen covered her mouth.
Before she could answer, every light in the mansion went out.
A man's voice came through the speakers.
May you like
"Hello, daughters."
Samuel Voss was inside the house.
