Chapter 3 - The Name in the Hospital File

Ethan ran upstairs.

Elena followed despite Mrs. Herrera shouting for them to wait.

The bedroom was empty.

The window stood open.

Someone had entered, taken nothing obvious, and disappeared.

Security found no intruder.

That frightened Ethan more.

It meant whoever had entered understood the mansion's systems.

By sunrise, Ethan had called one person he still trusted.

Marcus Reed.

Former Dallas detective.

Now Ethan's private security chief.

Marcus watched Rachel's recording twice.

"Daniel?"

"Find him."

"He's in Houston."

"Bring him back."

Marcus looked at Elena.

"And her?"

"She stays."

Elena folded her arms.

"I wasn't asking permission."

For the first time, something almost like amusement crossed Ethan's face.

It disappeared immediately.

They went to the hospital.

Elena hadn't entered those emergency department doors since leaving nursing school.

Her grandmother's illness had forced her to choose.

Career or family.

She had chosen Carmen.

She had never regretted loving her grandmother.

She had regretted losing the person she might have become.

Hospital administration initially refused access.

Ethan Carter changed that with one phone call.

Archived records showed Lily had been registered.

For eleven minutes.

Then the electronic record vanished.

"Records don't vanish," Elena said.

"Apparently they do when enough money is involved," Ethan replied.

They located a retired nurse named Susan Bell.

She agreed to meet them in a cafeteria away from the hospital.

The moment Elena mentioned Lily Carter, Susan's coffee cup trembled.

"I wondered when somebody would come."

Ethan leaned forward.

"My daughter."

Susan looked at him with heartbreaking pity.

"She was alive."

Three words.

They shattered him more completely than the original death notification.

"Tell me everything."

"Lily had head trauma, but she was breathing. Dr. Mercer ordered imaging. Then Daniel Carter arrived."

"My brother."

"Yes."

"He had no authority."

"He had paperwork."

"What paperwork?"

"Temporary medical guardianship."

Ethan stared.

"Impossible."

"Your signature was on it."

"I signed nothing."

Susan nodded.

"I suspected that."

"What happened next?"

"Mercer ordered Lily transferred."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Why didn't you report this?"

"I did."

"To whom?"

"Hospital administration."

"And?"

"I was fired two weeks later."

Susan reached into her purse.

"I kept this."

A photocopy.

Transfer authorization.

Patient: Lily Carter.

Destination had been blacked out.

But one code remained.

W17.

Elena stared at it.

She remembered something.

"Westbridge."

Susan looked at her.

"How do you know?"

"During my rotation, we used W codes for outside facilities."

Ethan searched.

Westbridge Pediatric Recovery Center.

Closed two years earlier.

Owned through a shell corporation.

Carter Medical Investments.

Ethan looked sick.

"I've never heard of that company."

Marcus called.

They had found Daniel.

More precisely, Daniel had found them.

He was waiting at the mansion.

Ethan wanted Elena nowhere near the confrontation.

She refused.

Daniel Carter stood in the library when they returned.

Older than Ethan by seven years.

Gray at his temples.

Expensive suit.

And on his lapel—

A gold CH pin.

Elena's stomach tightened.

"That's him."

Daniel looked at her.

"Excuse me?"

"The hospital."

His expression barely changed.

But Ethan saw it.

"You were there."

Daniel slowly removed his coat.

"Ethan, you need to be careful."

"Where is Lily?"

Daniel's face changed.

"Ethan—"

"Where is my daughter?"

"She's dead."

"Then why did you transfer her?"

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

"Have you lost your mind?"

Ethan threw the transfer document onto the table.

Daniel read it.

For the first time, his composure cracked.

"Where did you get this?"

"Wrong question."

Daniel sat.

"Rachel discovered financial irregularities."

"I know."

"She thought I was responsible."

"Were you?"

"Yes."

Elena blinked.

Daniel didn't deny it.

"I was hiding money," he said. "But not from you."

"Then from whom?"

"Our father."

Ethan went still.

Thomas Carter had died five years earlier.

Daniel continued.

"Father had been paying Mercer for years."

"For what?"

"I never found out."

"You're lying."

"I wish I were."

"What did Lily hear?"

Daniel looked at Elena, then back at Ethan.

"Rachel called me the day she died. She said Lily overheard Mercer talking about a child."

"What child?"

"I don't know."

Ethan stepped closer.

"Why were you at the hospital?"

"Rachel called me from the car. She said someone was following her."

Ethan's anger faltered.

"I got there after the crash."

"You transferred Lily."

"I saved her."

Silence.

Ethan's face emptied.

"What?"

"Mercer wanted her declared dead."

"Why?"

"I didn't know who I could trust. Not even you."

"You let me bury her."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I was supposed to move her somewhere safe for forty-eight hours."

Ethan grabbed him by the shirt.

"THREE YEARS."

Daniel didn't resist.

"Something went wrong."

"What?"

"The transport disappeared."

Ethan released him.

Daniel reached into his pocket.

"I spent three years looking."

He placed a photograph on the table.

A surveillance image.

A little blonde girl being led into a building by a woman.

The timestamp was eleven months after the accident.

Ethan couldn't speak.

"Is that—"

Daniel nodded.

"I believe it was Lily."

Ethan picked up the photograph.

The world narrowed to one small hand.

One familiar tilt of the head.

His daughter.

Alive.

"Where?"

"San Antonio."

"When?"

"Two years ago."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because everyone I contacted started disappearing."

Ethan stared at him.

Daniel whispered, "Including Dr. Mercer."

Marcus entered.

His face was grim.

"We found Mercer."

Ethan turned.

"Where?"

Marcus held up his phone.

"He's alive."

A message had arrived with an address.
