Chapter 2 - The Room at the End of the Hall

The lock moved.
Ethan pushed Elena behind him.
"Stay there."
The door opened.
Mrs. Herrera stood outside.
Her usually composed expression vanished when she saw Ethan.
"Sir?"
"What are you doing here?"
"I heard voices."
"At midnight?"
She looked at Elena.
Then at the photograph.
Something changed in her eyes.
Recognition.
Fear.
Ethan saw it.
"You know something."
Mrs. Herrera straightened.
"I don't know what you mean."
"Lily arrived at the hospital alive."
The color left her face.
That was enough.
Ethan stepped into the hallway.
"How long have you known?"
Mrs. Herrera whispered, "Not here."
Elena watched Ethan's anger sharpen.
"This is my house."
"Exactly."
Mrs. Herrera glanced toward the security camera above the corridor.
"Not here."
They moved into a small pantry with no camera.
Mrs. Herrera shut the door.
"For three years," she said, "I have been waiting for you to ask the right question."
Ethan stared at her.
"My daughter was alive?"
"When she reached the hospital, yes."
"And you knew?"
"I knew there were inconsistencies."
"You let me bury an empty coffin?"
Elena looked at Ethan.
Empty?
Mrs. Herrera lowered her eyes.
"You never saw Lily's body."
"No."
"Why?"
"They told me her injuries—"
His voice broke.
He stopped.
Mrs. Herrera continued quietly.
"Daniel arranged everything."
Ethan's expression turned to stone.
His half brother had identified Lily.
His half brother had arranged the funeral.
His half brother had convinced Ethan not to see his daughter's body.
At the time, Ethan had considered it mercy.
Now it sounded like choreography.
"What do you know?" he demanded.
"Not enough. Your wife died at the hospital. That is certain."
"And Lily?"
"I don't know."
Ethan slammed his palm against the shelf.
"You knew for three years!"
"I suspected."
"Same difference."
"No."
Mrs. Herrera finally raised her voice.
"Suspicion without proof would have destroyed you."
"You don't get to decide that."
"Someone had already tried to destroy you."
Silence.
Elena stepped forward.
"What does the locked upstairs room have to do with this?"
Mrs. Herrera stared at her.
Ethan did too.
"Why would you ask that?"
"Because you've forbidden everyone from entering it."
Ethan's face closed.
"That was Lily's room."
Elena understood.
The untouched room.
Three years.
A shrine behind a locked door.
Mrs. Herrera whispered, "You need to open it."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
"You need to."
"No."
"Ethan."
It was the first time Elena had heard Mrs. Herrera use his first name.
"Rachel left something there."
Ethan's eyes snapped toward her.
"What?"
"I don't know."
"How do you know?"
"She called me the afternoon of the accident."
Ethan stared.
Mrs. Herrera continued.
"Rachel sounded frightened. She told me that if anything happened, I should make sure you looked inside Lily's music box."
Ethan's voice was barely audible.
"You never told me."
"I tried. Daniel stopped me."
"How?"
"He threatened my son."
Elena saw shame cross the older woman's face.
"My son worked for Carter Holdings. Daniel showed me photographs of him leaving his apartment. Photographs of my grandchildren. I was afraid."
Ethan turned away.
For three years he had believed grief was the only monster in his house.
Now it had a name.
Daniel.
They climbed the staircase.
Ethan stopped before the final door.
His hand hovered over the lock.
Elena stood several feet behind him.
"You don't have to do this alone."
His eyes met hers.
"You've known me six days."
"Sometimes that's enough to stand beside somebody."
He unlocked the door.
The smell hit first.
Faint lavender.
Dust.
Childhood.
Moon stickers still covered the ceiling.
A stuffed rabbit rested against the pillows.
Crayons remained scattered across a little desk.
Ethan didn't move.
Elena watched his chest rise.
Fall.
Rise.
He walked to the bed and touched the blanket.
"Daddy, look."
The memory came so violently he nearly staggered.
Lily jumping on the mattress.
Rachel laughing.
Ethan pretending to be angry about shoes on the bed.
Then Elena gently said his name.
The music box.
It sat on the dresser.
White wood.
Painted stars.
Ethan opened it.
A tiny ballerina rotated.
Nothing.
Mrs. Herrera frowned.
"Rachel specifically said the music box."
Elena examined it.
"May I?"
Ethan nodded.
She lifted the velvet compartment.
Loose.
Elena removed it.
Underneath was a small brass key.
And a folded note.
Ethan recognized Rachel's handwriting.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Ethan—
If you're reading this, Daniel knows.
Don't trust the accident report.
Don't trust Dr. Mercer.
Lily heard them talking.
The rest had been torn away.
"Dr. Mercer," Elena whispered.
She knew the name.
"What?"
"He was the emergency physician."
Ethan looked at her.
"You're sure?"
"Yes."
Another memory surfaced.
Mercer arguing with a nurse.
A little girl being transferred.
A clipboard changing hands.
And the suited man.
Daniel.
"What did Lily hear?" Ethan asked.
No one knew.
Elena noticed the brass key.
"That doesn't look like a bedroom key."
Ethan took it.
Then he looked toward Lily's desk.
There was a small locked drawer.
The key fit.
Inside lay crayons, birthday cards and a pink notebook.
Ethan opened it.
Childish drawings.
Mommy.
Daddy.
A dog Lily had begged for.
Then a drawing of two men.
One labeled UNCLE D.
The other labeled DOCTOR.
Between them was a black rectangle.
A phone.
Underneath, Lily had written:
UNCLE DANIEL SAID DADDY CAN'T KNOW.
Ethan stared.
Elena turned the page.
The next sheet had been ripped out.
But pressure marks remained.
Elena tilted the notebook beneath the lamp.
Indentations.
Writing from the missing page.
Mrs. Herrera found a pencil.
Elena shaded lightly across the paper.
Letters emerged.
MOM PUT IT WHERE DADDY NEVER LOOKS.
Ethan frowned.
"Where?"
Then he understood.
His eyes moved toward the framed photograph on Lily's bedside table.
A picture of Ethan holding his daughter.
He removed the backing.
A tiny memory card fell onto his palm.
Ethan inserted it into his laptop downstairs.
One video file appeared.
Rachel filled the screen.
She looked frightened.
"If you're watching this, Ethan, I didn't get the chance to tell you."
Ethan leaned closer.
Rachel looked over her shoulder.
"Daniel has been moving money through the company. But that's not the worst part. Lily heard him discussing something with Dr. Mercer. They know she heard them."
A sound came from behind Rachel.
She turned.
The recording shook.
Then Rachel whispered:
"They're here."
The video ended.
Before anyone could speak, the mansion alarm sounded.
Ethan looked toward the security monitor.
The upstairs camera showed Lily's bedroom.
May you like
The door was open.
A figure was standing inside.
