Chapter 7 - The Fall Of A Man Who Thought He Owned Everything

Mateo Alvarez spent his entire life believing there were two types of people in the world.

Those who controlled the situation.

And those who were controlled by it.

He had always made sure he belonged to the first group.

When he wanted something, he found a way to get it.

When someone challenged him, he found a way to remove the obstacle.

When he made a mistake, he found someone else to blame.

That was how Mateo survived.

That was how he built his empire.

But now, for the first time, he was facing something money could not immediately fix.

The truth.

And the truth was standing beside the woman he had almost lost.

The news arrived before sunrise.

Mateo was sitting inside his office when his assistant walked in with a serious expression.

“Mr. Alvarez.”

Mateo looked up from his computer.

“What?”

The assistant placed a folder on the desk.

“There are rumors spreading among the board members.”

Mateo frowned.

“About what?”

The assistant hesitated.

“That someone has discovered irregularities in the company accounts.”

The room became silent.

Mateo stared at him.

“Who?”

“We don’t know yet.”

A cold feeling moved through Mateo.

Because he already knew.

Alejandro.

Only one person had the ability and motivation to do this.

“You need to stop it,” Mateo said.

His assistant looked uncertain.

“How?”

Mateo stood.

“I don’t care how.”

His voice became sharper.

“Fix it.”

The assistant nodded and left.

But the problem was already bigger than Mateo understood.

Because this time, he was not fighting against a competitor.

He was fighting against evidence.

And evidence did not get scared.

Camila spent the next few days recovering at Alejandro’s private residence.

It was not the kind of place Mateo would have chosen.

There were no unnecessary displays of wealth.

No giant rooms designed to impress guests.

No decorations meant to show power.

It was quiet.

Peaceful.

Safe.

For the first time in months, Camila woke up without wondering where Mateo was.

Without checking her phone every few minutes.

Without creating excuses for someone who had stopped trying.

She still felt pain.

Not only from the fall.

From everything she had learned.

Some wounds did not appear on medical scans.

They appeared when you finally accepted that the person you loved had hurt you.

One morning, Alejandro found her sitting near the window.

She was watching the sunrise.

“You’re awake early.”

Camila smiled slightly.

“I haven’t slept well for a long time.”

Alejandro sat in the chair across from her.

“Because of the baby?”

She shook her head.

“Because I was always waiting.”

He looked at her.

“For what?”

“For Mateo to come back.”

The honesty in her voice hurt.

Because Alejandro knew what she meant.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The man she loved had disappeared long before the night of the accident.

“I kept thinking if I was more patient…”

She looked down.

“If I was less emotional. If I complained less. If I supported him more…”

Alejandro interrupted softly.

“Camila.”

She looked up.

“You were never the problem.”

Those words made her eyes fill with tears.

Because for so long, she believed she had failed.

Failed as a wife.

Failed as a partner.

Failed because she could not keep someone from choosing to leave.

But Alejandro saw the truth.

Mateo did not betray her because she lacked something.

He betrayed her because he wanted something else.

Meanwhile, Mateo’s world was beginning to collapse.

The board meeting lasted three hours.

And for the first time, nobody in the room was afraid of him.

They asked questions.

They demanded answers.

They wanted explanations.

“What happened to these transfers?”

“Why were these accounts hidden?”

“Who approved these decisions?”

Mateo sat at the end of the table.

Usually, this was where he felt powerful.

Today, it felt like a courtroom.

“These accusations are ridiculous,” he said.

One board member looked at him.

“Then explain them.”

Mateo opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the documents were real.

The numbers were real.

The signatures were real.

His choices were real.

The same confidence that made him powerful had also made him careless.

He believed nobody would ever look closely.

He believed he was too important to fall.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message.

From an unknown number.

You should have answered her calls.

Mateo stared at the screen.

His blood ran cold.

He knew who sent it.

Alejandro.

That evening, Mateo went to Alejandro’s office.

He walked through the building without an appointment.

Security tried to stop him.

But Alejandro allowed him inside.

When Mateo entered, Alejandro was standing near the window.

Looking at the city.

The same city where Mateo once believed he owned everything.

“You’re enjoying this.”

Alejandro turned.

“No.”

Mateo laughed bitterly.

“Don’t lie.”

Alejandro remained calm.

“You think exposing the truth makes me happy?”

“You waited years for this.”

“No.”

Alejandro stepped closer.

“I waited years for you to admit who you were.”

Mateo’s expression darkened.

“You always thought you were better.”

Alejandro shook his head.

“That was never the problem.”

“Then what was?”

“You forgot that people are not tools.”

The words hit harder than Mateo expected.

Because they described his entire life.

His employees.

His friends.

His wife.

Everyone had become something useful.

Something valuable.

Something replaceable.

“You hurt Camila,” Alejandro said.

Mateo looked away.

“And now you’re trying to make this about business.”

Mateo clenched his jaw.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

Alejandro’s voice became colder.

“I understand perfectly.”

“You lost someone who loved you because you believed she would never leave.”

Silence.

For the first time, Mateo had no argument.

A week later, the truth reached the public.

Not everything.

Not yet.

But enough.

The company investigation became official.

Investors began pulling away.

Partners demanded explanations.

The perfect image Mateo had created started cracking.

The man everyone thought was unstoppable suddenly became the man everyone questioned.

And the most painful part?

Camila never tried to destroy him.

She never went to the media.

She never demanded revenge.

She simply walked away.

That was what hurt him most.

Because anger would have meant she still cared.

But peace meant she had finally chosen herself.

Mateo eventually came to see her.

Not with confidence.

Not with excuses.

Just exhaustion.

Camila agreed to meet him.

But only in the presence of Alejandro.

Not because she needed protection.

Because she no longer wanted to face Mateo alone.

They sat in the quiet garden outside the residence.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally, Mateo looked at her.

“I lost everything.”

Camila remained silent.

“I know what I did was wrong.”

She looked at him.

“Do you?”

Mateo swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Or do you regret being caught?”

The question destroyed him.

Because deep down, he knew the answer was complicated.

He regretted hurting her.

But he also regretted losing control.

And Camila saw that.

“I loved you,” she said.

Mateo looked at her.

“I loved you more than anyone.”

His eyes became wet.

“I know.”

“No.”

Her voice was gentle.

“You knew I loved you.”

A pause.

“But you forgot to love me back.”

Those words stayed between them.

Mateo lowered his head.

Because there was nothing he could say.

Months earlier, Mateo thought his life was perfect.

A beautiful wife.

A child on the way.

A successful company.

A reputation everyone admired.

Now, sitting across from Camila, he understood something.

He had not lost everything because Alejandro took it from him.

He lost everything because he threw it away.

The calls he ignored.

The promises he broke.

The person he neglected.

All of it led here.

Later that night, Alejandro stood outside while Camila rested.

She joined him after a few minutes.

“You didn’t have to stay through all of that.”

He looked at her.

“Yes, I did.”

She smiled.

“You always say that.”

“Because it’s true.”

They stood quietly.

No pressure.

No expectations.

Just peace.

Camila looked at the city lights.

For the first time in a long time, she was not afraid of tomorrow.

She still had healing to do.

She still had questions.

She still carried scars.

But she also had something she lost for a long time.

Hope.

And somewhere across the city, Mateo finally understood the cruelest truth of all.

The man he hated most had not stolen his life.

May you like

He had simply been there when Mateo abandoned it.

And now, there was nothing Mateo could do except watch the woman he once took for granted build a future without him.
