Chapter 6 - The Enemy Who Became Her Protector

Alejandro Rivera had spent his entire life learning one important lesson.
Trust was expensive.
He learned it in business.
He learned it through betrayal.
And he learned it from the person who once stood beside him as a brother.
Mateo Alvarez.
For years, Alejandro believed their friendship ended because of a business disagreement.
A failed partnership.
A difference in ambition.
But after hearing the recording, he realized something much worse.
Mateo’s betrayal was not something that happened overnight.
It was something Mateo had been building quietly.
A web of lies.
A carefully controlled image.
A life where everyone believed he was a devoted husband while behind closed doors he was becoming someone completely different.
Alejandro sat alone in his office that night, the recording playing through his computer.
The city lights outside reflected against the glass windows.
Normally, this was where he made decisions.
Where he analyzed risks.
Where he planned his next move.
But tonight was different.
Because this was not a business problem.
This was a woman’s life.
A child’s future.
And the truth Mateo wanted buried.
He replayed the recording one more time.
Mateo’s voice filled the room.
“She doesn’t need to know everything.”
Valeria’s voice followed.
“But what if she finds out?”
“She won’t.”
“You’re sure?”
“I know my wife.”
Alejandro stopped the recording.
Those words bothered him the most.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they showed how confident Mateo was.
He believed Camila would never leave.
He believed she would always forgive.
He believed love made people weak.
Alejandro leaned back in his chair.
But he knew something Mateo didn’t.
Love did not always make people weak.
Sometimes it was the reason people finally found their strength.
The next morning, Camila woke up feeling different.
Not completely healed.
Not without pain.
But different.
The fear that had controlled her for the last two days was slowly being replaced by something else.
Clarity.
She looked around the hospital room.
The flowers.
The medical equipment.
The quiet morning light.
Everything reminded her of the night she almost lost everything.
But instead of feeling only sadness, she felt something she had not felt in a long time.
Peace.
A knock came at the door.
Alejandro entered.
This time, he was not wearing his usual serious expression.
He carried coffee in one hand and a small bag in the other.
“You shouldn’t be walking around buying things for me,” Camila said softly.
A small smile appeared on his face.
“You shouldn’t be apologizing every time someone helps you.”
She looked down.
Old habits.
Even now, she was still trying to make herself smaller.
Alejandro placed the bag beside her.
“Your doctor said you can eat something light.”
She looked inside.
Fresh fruit.
A small meal.
Nothing extravagant.
Just thoughtful.
“Thank you.”
He nodded.
Then he became quiet.
Camila noticed.
“What is it?”
Alejandro hesitated.
For the first time, she saw uncertainty in him.
The man everyone described as powerful.
The man who could walk into any room and control it.
Was carefully choosing his words.
“I found something.”
Her expression changed.
“About Mateo?”
Alejandro did not answer immediately.
That was enough.
Camila looked away.
“I knew something was wrong.”
Her voice became quieter.
“I just didn’t know how much.”
Alejandro sat down.
“There are things you need to know.”
She nodded.
“Tell me.”
Before he spoke, he studied her face.
“Are you sure?”
Camila looked at him.
“I spent years believing everything was fine because I was afraid of the truth.”
She placed her hand over her stomach.
“I almost lost my baby because I refused to see it.”
Her eyes became determined.
“I want the truth now.”
Alejandro understood.
So he showed her the recording.
Camila listened silently.
At first, there was no reaction.
No anger.
No tears.
Just silence.
Sometimes pain was too large to appear immediately.
The recording ended.
The room remained quiet.
Finally, Camila whispered:
“How long?”
Alejandro looked at her.
“How long what?”
“How long has he been lying to me?”
Alejandro did not want to hurt her further.
But she deserved honesty.
“I don’t know everything yet.”
Camila stared at the floor.
For years, she had defended Mateo.
To friends.
To family.
Even to herself.
She had blamed stress.
Work.
Pressure.
Anything except the possibility that the man she loved simply stopped choosing her.
“He told me you were dangerous.”
Alejandro looked at her.
“Who?”
“Mateo.”
A bitter smile appeared on her face.
“He said you wanted to destroy him.”
Alejandro was silent.
Then he said:
“Maybe he was afraid I would reveal who he really was.”
Those words stayed with her.
Because deep down…
She knew.
Across the city, Mateo was having his own conversation.
And it was not with Camila.
It was with Valeria.
Inside a private restaurant, away from cameras and attention, Mateo looked exhausted.
For the first time, Valeria saw fear in him.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
“This is getting out of control,” she said.
Mateo looked at her.
“Relax.”
“You said she would never find out.”
“She won’t.”
Valeria stared at him.
“You don’t believe that anymore.”
Mateo said nothing.
Because he didn’t.
The problem was no longer Camila.
The problem was Alejandro.
Alejandro had always been the one person Mateo could not manipulate.
The one person who saw through him.
“You need to handle this,” Valeria whispered.
Mateo looked at her.
“What do you think I’m doing?”
“I think you’re losing control.”
The words angered him.
Because they were true.
Mateo had spent his entire life believing control was his greatest strength.
Now everything was slipping.
His wife was pulling away.
Alejandro was protecting her.
And the truth was getting closer.
That afternoon, Mateo came to the hospital again.
This time, he did not walk in confidently.
He stopped outside the door.
Through the glass, he saw Camila talking with Alejandro.
Not romantically.
Not secretly.
Just talking.
But it bothered him.
Because Alejandro was there.
The person Mateo hated.
The person who answered when he didn’t.
The person who became important because Mateo chose not to be.
Mateo entered.
The conversation stopped.
Camila looked at him.
“Can we talk?”
Alejandro stood.
“I’ll give you space.”
Camila looked at him.
“Stay.”
The word was quiet.
But it changed everything.
Mateo noticed.
Alejandro noticed.
Even Camila noticed.
Because for the first time, she had chosen who she felt safe with.
Mateo’s expression tightened.
“You trust him more than me?”
Camila looked at him.
“I trust the person who came when I called.”
Silence.
Mateo looked away.
That sentence destroyed every excuse he had.
“I’m trying to fix this.”
Camila shook her head.
“No.”
Mateo looked surprised.
“No?”
“You’re trying to fix the consequences.”
She paused.
“But you haven’t admitted what caused them.”
Mateo stepped closer.
“I made a mistake.”
Camila looked at him.
“You keep calling it a mistake.”
Her voice became stronger.
“But it was a choice.”
Mateo had no answer.
Because she was right.
Later that evening, Alejandro received another message.
This time, it was not from his security team.
It was from someone unexpected.
A former employee of Mateo.
The message contained documents.
Financial records.
Private communications.
Evidence of something much larger than an affair.
Alejandro opened the files.
His expression changed.
Because now he understood.
Mateo had not only betrayed Camila emotionally.
He had been hiding financial problems.
Using company resources.
Making decisions that could destroy everything.
And if the information was true…
Mateo’s entire empire was built on a lie.
Alejandro looked at the documents.
Then at the hospital room where Camila slept peacefully.
He had a choice.
Expose Mateo immediately.
Or wait.
Protect Camila first.
For years, Alejandro and Mateo fought because they wanted to win.
But this time, Alejandro did not want victory.
He wanted justice.
And he wanted Camila to have the chance to choose her own future without fear.
The next morning, Camila was discharged from the hospital under strict medical instructions.
She could not return to the mansion.
Not yet.
Not after what happened.
Alejandro arranged a private residence where she could recover safely.
When Mateo found out, he was furious.
“You’re taking her away from me?”
Alejandro looked at him calmly.
“No.”
“She’s my wife.”
Alejandro’s eyes became cold.
“She is also a person.”
Mateo froze.
A simple sentence.
But one he had forgotten.
Camila was not property.
Not an image.
Not something he could lose and reclaim whenever he wanted.
She was a woman who had survived being abandoned.
And now she finally had someone protecting her.
As Camila left the hospital, she looked back once.
At Mateo.
The man she once thought was her forever.
Then at Alejandro.
The man she once feared because Mateo told her to.
And she realized something.
Sometimes the person you are warned against is not your enemy.
Sometimes they are the person who shows up when everyone else disappears.
But neither Camila nor Alejandro knew yet…
May you like
that Mateo was not ready to accept losing control.
And the secrets he was hiding were about to come to light.
