Chapter 3 - The Man She Was Forbidden To Trust

The hospital doors opened before the ambulance completely stopped.

A team of doctors and nurses rushed forward.

Bright white lights reflected across the wet pavement outside the emergency entrance.

The world moved quickly.

Too quickly.

Orders were shouted.

Medical equipment rolled across the floor.

Footsteps echoed through the hallway.

But Alejandro Rivera heard only one thing.

Camila’s breathing.

Weak.

Uneven.

Fragile.

He walked beside the stretcher as long as they allowed him.

His hand remained wrapped around hers.

Even when doctors began checking her injuries.

Even when nurses told him to step back.

He stayed close.

Because less than an hour earlier, Camila had been lying alone on a cold marble floor believing nobody was coming.

He refused to let her feel that again.

“Sir, we need space,” a nurse said gently.

Alejandro looked at Camila.

Her eyes were barely open.

For a second, she looked terrified.

Like she was afraid he would disappear too.

He leaned closer.

“Camila.”

Her eyes focused slightly.

“I’m right here.”

Only then did her fingers slowly relax.

The doctors pushed her through the emergency doors.

And Alejandro was left standing alone in the hallway.

For the first time in years, a powerful man who had faced countless enemies felt completely powerless.

Because money could buy hospitals.

It could buy the best doctors.

It could buy the most advanced equipment.

But it could not guarantee that someone you cared about would survive.

Three hours earlier, Mateo Alvarez was still celebrating.

He had no idea his life had already begun collapsing.

The private club was quieter now.

The music had lowered.

Several guests had left.

But Mateo remained at the center of the room.

Still smiling.

Still drinking.

Still believing tomorrow belonged to him.

Valeria sat beside him, scrolling through her phone.

“You know,” she said casually, “you look happier tonight.”

Mateo looked at her.

“I am.”

“Because you’re free?”

He smiled.

“Because I’m finally enjoying my own life.”

Valeria studied him.

“And Camila?”

Mateo’s expression hardened.

“What about her?”

“She’s your wife.”

“She’s the mother of my child.”

Valeria waited.

But Mateo didn’t continue.

That silence revealed more than any answer could.

Valeria leaned closer.

“Do you ever feel guilty?”

Mateo laughed.

“Guilty for what?”

“For being here instead of with her.”

Mateo shook his head.

“Camila has everything.”

The words came easily.

Too easily.

“She lives in a beautiful house. She has the best doctors. She has security. She doesn’t need me every second.”

Valeria smiled.

“That’s convenient.”

Mateo looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you’ve convinced yourself that being absent is the same as being responsible.”

For a moment, Mateo said nothing.

Because somewhere deep inside, he knew she was right.

But admitting that would mean facing something he hated.

That he was not the hero of his own story.

So he ignored the feeling.

Like he ignored everything else.

At the hospital, Alejandro stood outside the emergency room.

His suit was still perfectly tailored.

His appearance was still controlled.

But his eyes had changed.

The calm businessman everyone knew was gone.

A man from his security team approached.

“Mr. Rivera.”

Alejandro turned.

“We checked the mansion.”

“And?”

“The security system was active. No staff were present.”

Alejandro’s jaw tightened.

“No staff?”

“The household employees were given the weekend off.”

Alejandro looked toward the emergency room doors.

Mateo.

Of course.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Mateo had always loved controlling his environment.

The house.

The people around him.

The image everyone saw.

A perfect husband.

A successful businessman.

A future father.

But Alejandro knew the truth.

He had known it before anyone else.

Because once, Mateo had been his closest friend.

Ten years earlier, before money changed them, Mateo and Alejandro were inseparable.

They started their first company with nothing.

Two young men sitting in a tiny apartment, eating cheap food and dreaming about impossible things.

Mateo was charismatic.

Everyone liked him.

He could walk into any room and make people believe in him.

Alejandro was different.

Quiet.

Focused.

Patient.

Together, they were unstoppable.

Or at least, that was what Alejandro believed.

Until success arrived.

Money changed Mateo slowly.

Not all at once.

That would have been easier to notice.

It started with small things.

A different attitude.

A need to always win.

A belief that people were either useful or useless.

Then came the biggest disagreement of their lives.

A business decision that could have destroyed thousands of employees.

Alejandro refused to approve it.

Mateo called him weak.

Alejandro called him reckless.

The friendship that had survived years broke in one night.

After that, Mateo made sure everyone knew one thing.

Alejandro Rivera was his enemy.

But Alejandro knew something Mateo forgot.

Enemies paid attention.

Enemies watched.

Enemies remembered.

And Alejandro remembered everything.

The emergency room doors finally opened.

A doctor stepped out.

Alejandro immediately walked forward.

“How is she?”

The doctor removed his mask.

“She is stable for now.”

Alejandro released a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.

“And the baby?”

The doctor hesitated.

That hesitation was enough to make his heart drop.

“We are monitoring both of them closely.”

Alejandro nodded.

“Tell me the truth.”

The doctor looked at him.

“She suffered a serious fall. There was internal trauma and significant stress on the pregnancy.”

He paused.

“The next several hours are critical.”

Alejandro closed his eyes briefly.

“Can I see her?”

“In a few minutes.”

The doctor walked away.

Alejandro remained standing there.

Stable.

Critical.

Those words were supposed to sound reassuring.

But they didn’t.

Because Alejandro knew Camila.

He knew how much she had already endured.

And he knew something else.

She had not called him because Mateo was unavailable.

She called him because she had reached the point where she believed Mateo would never come.

When Camila finally woke, the first thing she saw was a hospital ceiling.

For several seconds, she didn’t remember what happened.

Then everything returned.

The staircase.

The pain.

The phone calls.

Mateo.

Her eyes immediately filled with tears.

A voice came from beside her.

“Don’t move.”

She turned.

Alejandro was sitting beside the bed.

Still wearing the same clothes.

He had not left.

“You stayed?”

The question was barely audible.

Alejandro looked at her.

“Of course.”

Camila looked away.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“He didn’t answer.”

Alejandro knew exactly who she meant.

He didn’t ask.

He didn’t need to.

“He should have been there.”

Camila closed her eyes.

The pain on her face was not only physical.

“I called him seventeen times.”

Alejandro’s expression changed.

He already knew.

But hearing her say it made it worse.

“I thought maybe something happened to him.”

Her voice cracked.

“I kept making excuses.”

Another tear fell.

“Maybe his phone died. Maybe he couldn’t hear it. Maybe…”

She stopped.

Because she finally reached the truth she had been avoiding.

“Maybe he just didn’t want to answer.”

Alejandro stayed silent.

Sometimes the truth hurt more when someone confirmed it.

“I’m sorry,” Camila whispered.

Again, Alejandro heard those words.

The same apology.

The same woman blaming herself for needing help.

“You keep saying sorry.”

She looked at him.

“You almost lost your life tonight, Camila.”

His voice softened.

“You don’t apologize for surviving.”

For a moment, she looked at him differently.

Not as Mateo’s enemy.

Not as the man she had been warned about.

But as the person who came when everyone else disappeared.

Outside the hospital room, Alejandro’s phone vibrated.

One of his employees.

He answered quietly.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“We found something at the mansion.”

Alejandro looked through the glass window at Camila.

“What?”

“The security cameras.”

His expression changed.

“Show me.”

A few seconds later, a video file appeared.

Alejandro opened it.

The footage showed the mansion hallway.

Camila walking toward the stairs.

The fall.

The moment she hit the ground.

Then the next hour.

Her trying to reach her phone.

Trying to call Mateo.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Alejandro watched silently.

Then another detail appeared.

At 11:07 p.m.

The same time Camila made her first call.

A separate camera showed Mateo’s phone.

Inside the private club.

The screen lit up.

Camila calling.

Mateo looked at it.

And rejected it.

Alejandro stared at the screen.

The anger inside him became cold.

Controlled.

Because now he knew.

Mateo had not failed to save Camila.

He had chosen not to.

Alejandro closed the video.

Then he looked back at Camila lying in the hospital bed.

A woman who had almost died because the man who promised forever decided one night of pleasure mattered more.

And for the first time in years, Alejandro Rivera made a decision.

Not as Mateo’s former friend.

Not as his rival.

May you like

But as the man who had witnessed the truth.

Mateo Alvarez was going to answer for every single call he ignored.
