Chapter 5 - The Battle For Camila’s Life And The Truth

Mateo Alvarez had faced angry investors.

He had faced competitors who wanted to destroy his company.

He had faced men who threatened everything he built.

But nothing prepared him for the way Camila looked at him.

Not with anger.

Not with hatred.

With disappointment.

That was worse.

Because anger meant there was still something left to fight for.

Disappointment meant someone had expected better from him and finally accepted that he was not the person they believed he was.

Mateo stood beside the hospital bed, searching for words.

For the first time in years, he had nothing.

“I didn’t know,” he finally said.

Camila stared at him.

Her face was pale from exhaustion.

Her voice was weak.

But every word carried weight.

“You didn’t know because you didn’t answer.”

Mateo looked down.

The truth was impossible to escape.

He could explain.

He could say he was distracted.

He could say he made a mistake.

He could say he never thought anything serious would happen.

But none of those excuses changed the image in his mind.

Camila alone on the floor.

Calling his name.

Waiting.

And him choosing a different woman.

“I was wrong,” Mateo whispered.

Camila closed her eyes.

The tears that formed were not tears of anger.

They were tears from realizing something she had refused to accept.

The man she loved was not the man she married.

“I needed you,” she said softly.

Those four words hurt him more than anything.

Because they were simple.

No accusation.

No screaming.

Just the truth.

She needed him.

And he wasn't there.

Alejandro stood outside the room.

He could hear enough.

He didn't want to listen.

This moment belonged to Camila.

Not him.

But he couldn't walk away.

Not after seeing what happened.

Not after watching her fight alone.

A nurse approached him.

“Mr. Rivera?”

He turned.

“Yes?”

“The doctor wants to speak with you again.”

Alejandro followed her.

The doctor was reviewing Camila’s medical results.

“There is something important we need to discuss.”

Alejandro immediately became serious.

“What happened?”

“The baby’s condition has improved, but Camila’s body is still recovering from the trauma.”

He nodded.

“What does she need?”

“Stability.”

The doctor looked at him.

“Physical and emotional.”

Alejandro understood.

The doctor continued.

“Stress can affect recovery. She needs people around her who make her feel safe.”

Alejandro glanced toward the hospital room.

A strange feeling moved through him.

Not because he wanted to replace anyone.

Not because he wanted to take something from Mateo.

But because he realized something.

Camila had spent years surrounded by luxury.

A beautiful home.

Expensive clothes.

A life most people dreamed about.

Yet the one thing she needed most was simple.

Someone who would answer when she called.

Mateo left the hospital room twenty minutes later.

He looked different.

Not weaker.

Changed.

But Alejandro knew him too well.

Mateo was not a man who accepted losing easily.

Even now, part of him was not thinking about Camila.

Part of him was thinking about control.

About fixing the situation.

About protecting his reputation.

Alejandro saw it in his eyes.

“You should go home.”

Mateo stopped.

“You’re giving me orders now?”

“No.”

Alejandro looked at him.

“I’m telling you that she needs peace.”

Mateo laughed quietly.

“You think you know what she needs?”

Alejandro didn't react.

“I know what she needed last night.”

The words landed.

Mateo looked away.

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Mateo lowered his voice.

“You always thought you were better than me.”

Alejandro shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

The question was full of bitterness.

Alejandro answered honestly.

“Because someone had to be.”

Mateo’s expression hardened.

“You enjoy this.”

“Enjoy what?”

“Seeing me fail.”

Alejandro looked at him carefully.

“This isn't about you.”

That sentence made Mateo angrier than an insult.

Because deep down, he knew Alejandro was right.

For years, everything had been about Mateo.

His success.

His image.

His desires.

Even his marriage.

But this time, the person suffering wasn't him.

It was Camila.

Later that afternoon, Camila woke again.

This time, she felt slightly stronger.

The room was quiet.

Sunlight entered through the window.

For a moment, she forgot where she was.

Then she placed her hand over her stomach.

Her first thought was not Mateo.

Not the accident.

Not the betrayal.

Her baby.

A small movement answered.

Camila immediately started crying.

Not from fear.

From relief.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

A knock came at the door.

Alejandro entered carrying a small bag.

“You’re awake.”

She smiled faintly.

“You’re still here.”

He placed the bag on the table.

“I told you I wouldn't leave.”

Camila looked at him.

“You didn’t have to do this.”

“Yes, I did.”

The answer surprised her.

Alejandro sat beside the chair.

“You called me.”

She looked down.

“I almost didn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Mateo told me I should stay away from you.”

Alejandro was silent.

Camila continued.

“He said you were dangerous.”

A small, sad smile appeared on Alejandro’s face.

“And what do you think?”

She looked at him.

For the first time, she truly saw him.

Not through Mateo’s accusations.

Not through old stories.

Through her own experience.

“The dangerous person,” she whispered, “was the one who didn't answer.”

Alejandro looked away briefly.

Those words carried pain.

Because he knew how much courage it took for her to say them.

That evening, Mateo returned to the mansion.

The house looked exactly the same.

The same marble floors.

The same staircase.

The same expensive decorations.

But everything felt different.

Because now the house held evidence.

Evidence of the moment everything changed.

He stood at the bottom of the staircase.

His eyes moved upward.

He imagined Camila falling.

He imagined her calling him.

And suddenly the silence of the mansion became unbearable.

He walked to the security room.

The cameras were still recording.

He watched the footage.

Again.

And again.

At first, he looked for something.

Anything.

A reason.

A detail that would make him less responsible.

But there was nothing.

Only Camila.

Only fear.

Only seventeen attempts to reach him.

Then he saw something else.

At 11:26 p.m., after Camila had already fallen, the front door camera showed someone entering.

Alejandro.

Mateo froze.

He watched as Alejandro ran inside.

Watched as he immediately found Camila.

Watched as he held her hand.

The same hand Mateo should have been holding.

A wave of jealousy and anger rushed through him.

Not because Alejandro saved her.

Because Alejandro became the person Camila trusted when Mateo failed.

Mateo closed the footage.

“No.”

The word came quietly.

Almost like denial.

“No.”

But the truth was already there.

The next morning, something unexpected happened.

Camila’s doctor entered the room with paperwork.

“We need to discuss your care plan after discharge.”

Camila nodded.

She still looked tired.

But stronger.

The doctor continued.

“You will need support during your recovery.”

Before Camila could answer, Mateo entered.

“I’ll take care of everything.”

The room became quiet.

Camila looked at him.

Mateo stepped closer.

“I mean it.”

He looked desperate.

“I’ll cancel my schedule. I’ll be here. I’ll fix this.”

Camila listened.

But her expression did not change.

Because promises were easy.

Actions were what mattered.

“You said you would protect me before.”

Mateo stopped.

“And when I needed you…”

Her voice became softer.

“You weren't there.”

Mateo looked like he had been physically hit.

Alejandro, standing near the window, said nothing.

This was Camila’s decision.

Not his.

Mateo looked at her.

“Is there someone else?”

The question surprised her.

She frowned.

“What?”

“You trust Alejandro.”

Camila looked at him.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“Because he came.”

Mateo had no answer.

Because that was the entire truth.

That afternoon, while Camila rested, Alejandro received a message from his security team.

A file.

A document.

Something they found while reviewing the mansion records.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

Because inside the file was something unexpected.

A hidden conversation.

A recording from weeks earlier.

Mateo’s voice.

And another voice.

Valeria’s.

Talking about Camila.

Talking about the baby.

Talking about a plan Mateo had never told his wife.

Alejandro listened silently.

His face became colder with every second.

Because the accident was not the only secret Mateo was hiding.

There was something bigger.

Something Mateo had spent months protecting.

And now Alejandro finally understood.

Camila had not only been betrayed.

She had been deceived.

Alejandro looked toward the hospital room.

Then back at the recording.

For years, Mateo had believed he could control every story.

Every person.

Every outcome.

But this time, he had made one mistake.

May you like

He underestimated the one person he always considered his enemy.

And Alejandro Rivera was about to reveal everything.
