Chapter 1 - The Night Her Husband Chose Another Woman

The first call came at 11:07 p.m.
Mateo Alvarez saw his wife’s name appear on the screen of his phone, glowing against the darkness of the private club.
Camila.
For a second, the name stood there between the flashing neon lights and the expensive crystal glasses scattered across the table.
Then Mateo smiled.
Not because he was relieved.
Not because he was worried.
Because he already knew what he was going to do.
He turned the phone face down.
Across from him, his friends were laughing loudly, celebrating another successful business deal. The private room of the San Pedro Garza García club was filled with everything Mateo loved: power, attention, money, and people who made him feel untouchable.
The music shook the walls.
The golden lights reflected on expensive watches and designer clothes.
Champagne flowed freely.
And sitting beside him was Valeria.
Beautiful.
Confident.
Dangerous in the way only someone who knew exactly what they wanted could be.
She leaned against Mateo’s shoulder, watching him ignore the call.
“She’s calling again?” she asked.
Mateo picked up his glass and took a slow drink.
“Yes.”
Valeria glanced at the phone.
“She knows you’re out?”
“She always knows when I’m out.”
“And she’s okay with it?”
Mateo laughed.
The sound was cold.
“She’s my wife. She’s used to me having a life.”
Valeria raised an eyebrow.
“Is that what you call it?”
Mateo looked at her.
She smiled.
The kind of smile that encouraged him to be worse.
“She’s pregnant,” Valeria whispered. “Maybe she actually needs you.”
Mateo leaned back into the leather couch.
For a brief moment, something almost human crossed his face.
A memory.
Camila smiling at him when they first discovered they were going to have a baby.
Camila holding his hand during the first ultrasound.
Camila crying happy tears when the doctor told them their child was healthy.
But the memory disappeared quickly.
Mateo had spent years convincing himself that responsibility was something other people carried.
Not him.
He had built an empire.
He had connections.
He had money.
He believed every problem could be solved by throwing enough of those things at it.
Even his marriage.
Especially his marriage.
“She’s probably just being dramatic,” he said.
One of his friends overheard him.
“Your wife?”
Mateo nodded.
“Pregnant women.”
He laughed.
“They turn everything into an emergency.”
The table laughed with him.
Nobody questioned him.
Nobody told him he was wrong.
That was the dangerous thing about Mateo’s world.
People around him rarely told him the truth.
They told him whatever allowed him to remain comfortable.
His phone vibrated again.
Second call.
Then third.
Then fourth.
By midnight, the screen showed seven missed calls.
Mateo looked at it once.
Then he placed it back down.
Valeria watched him carefully.
“You’re really not going to answer?”
“No.”
“What if something happened?”
Mateo smiled.
“Camila has doctors. She has security. She has everything she needs.”
He lifted his glass.
“Tonight is for me.”
The room erupted in laughter.
Mateo believed those words.
He believed tomorrow would arrive exactly like every other day.
He believed Camila would still be waiting.
He believed forgiveness was something he could always ask for later.
He was wrong.
Because several miles away, inside a quiet mansion overlooking the city, Camila Alvarez was fighting to survive.
And she was fighting alone.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
Camila had always hated that silence.
When Mateo was home, the house felt alive.
Even when they argued.
Even when they disagreed.
At least there was another voice.
Another heartbeat.
Another person.
But tonight, the marble floors reflected only the dim lights above.
The expensive paintings on the walls watched over an empty home.
Camila slowly walked down the hallway, one hand resting protectively over her stomach.
Eight months pregnant.
Eight months of waiting.
Eight months of imagining the tiny face of the baby growing inside her.
She smiled softly.
“Just a little longer,” she whispered.
She had been trying to stay positive.
Even after Mateo started coming home later.
Even after conversations became shorter.
Even after she noticed his phone always faced downward.
Camila had ignored the signs because she loved him.
Because she remembered who he used to be.
The man who brought her flowers after their first argument.
The man who stayed awake all night when she had a fever.
The man who promised her:
“Nothing will ever come between us.”
She wanted to believe that man was still there.
She needed to believe it.
That was why she had not confronted him about Valeria.
Not yet.
She wanted proof.
She wanted answers.
She wanted to save her family.
But tonight was different.
Tonight was not about betrayal.
Not yet.
Tonight was about survival.
Camila reached the staircase.
She stopped.
A sudden wave of dizziness hit her.
She placed her hand against the railing.
“Okay,” she whispered.
“Slowly.”
She took one step.
Then another.
The world suddenly tilted.
Her fingers searched for the railing.
They missed.
And in one terrifying second, everything disappeared.
The sound of her body hitting the marble floor echoed through the mansion.
Pain exploded through her.
She couldn't breathe.
For several seconds, she could only stare at the ceiling.
The chandelier above her became a blurry circle of light.
Then she felt it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Her hand immediately moved to her stomach.
“Baby…”
Her voice cracked.
“Please…”
The baby moved.
But not normally.
Something was wrong.
Camila tried to sit up.
Pain stopped her.
A sharp, unbearable pain that stole the air from her lungs.
She reached for her phone.
Her fingers trembled.
The screen was cracked.
But it still worked.
The first name she searched for was the only name she wanted.
Mateo.
She pressed call.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then the call ended.
Rejected.
Camila stared at the screen.
Maybe he pressed it accidentally.
Maybe he didn't see it.
She called again.
Rejected.
Again.
Rejected.
Again.
Her breathing became weaker.
Tears rolled down her face.
“Mateo…”
She whispered his name like saying it could bring him back.
Like he could somehow hear her.
The fifth call.
The sixth.
The seventh.
Each rejection hurt more.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
Something inside her broke.
Because she finally understood.
He wasn't busy.
He wasn't unable.
He was choosing not to answer.
She looked around the enormous mansion.
The place Mateo bought to show the world how successful he was.
The place where every room was beautiful.
And where she was now completely alone.
Her hand moved across the cold marble floor.
She tried to reach the emergency button near the wall.
Too far.
The pain became stronger.
Her vision blurred.
She looked at her phone again.
Ten missed calls.
Then eleven.
Then twelve.
At the club, Mateo was still laughing.
At the mansion, Camila was running out of strength.
The distance between them was only a few miles.
But emotionally, it was an ocean.
She pressed call again.
Thirteen.
Fourteen.
Fifteen.
Her tears fell onto the phone screen.
“Please answer…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
Sixteen.
The call failed.
Camila closed her eyes.
She had never felt so abandoned.
Then, with the last strength she had left, she opened her contacts.
There was one person Mateo never wanted her to call.
One person he always warned her about.
One person he said would destroy everything.
Alejandro Rivera.
Mateo’s former best friend.
The man who knew every secret Mateo had.
The man Mateo hated because Alejandro was the only person who could see through him.
Camila’s thumb hovered over his name.
She remembered Mateo’s voice.
“Stay away from Alejandro.”
“He’s not your friend.”
“He’s dangerous.”
But lying there on the cold floor, carrying Mateo’s child, with her husband refusing to answer her cries for help…
Camila realized something.
The person Mateo hated most might be the only person who would save her.
She pressed the button.
The phone rang.
Once.
A deep voice answered immediately.
“Camila?”
Her lips trembled.
“Alejandro…”
The fear in her voice changed everything.
He sat up instantly.
“What happened?”
She tried to speak.
But the pain took over.
“I fell…”
Silence.
Then his voice became sharp.
“Where are you?”
“The mansion…”
“Are you alone?”
She couldn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Alejandro understood.
“Listen to me,” he said.
“I need you to stay awake.”
Camila cried.
“Mateo won’t answer.”
The silence that followed was only one second.
But Alejandro heard everything in that second.
The betrayal.
The fear.
The desperation.
And something inside him changed.
“Camila,” he said firmly.
“I’m coming.”
The last thing she heard before the phone slipped from her hand was Alejandro giving orders.
Calling doctors.
Calling security.
Moving faster than anyone else ever had for her.
And for the first time that night…
Camila was no longer alone.
But she didn't know yet that the man coming to save her would become the person Mateo feared most.
May you like
And she didn't know that by ignoring seventeen calls from his pregnant wife…
Mateo had just made the biggest mistake of his life.
