Chapter 5 - The Night Elena Disappeared

Adrian moved between Margaret and Elena.
“Aunt Margaret.”
“Still dramatic.”
“How did you get in?”
“With a key.”
“You don't have one.”
Margaret smiled.
“Clearly I do.”
Security moved toward her.
She raised both hands.
“If I wanted Elena harmed, she would not have awakened this morning.”
Adrian's expression turned murderous.
“That is a dangerous sentence.”
“It is also true.”
Elena stepped around him.
“Did you put the ring on me?”
Margaret looked at her.
“No.”
“Did you enter my bedroom?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make sure the key was still hidden.”
Rebecca stared.
“You knew?”
Margaret glanced at her.
“I was the one who told you to use the ring.”
Rebecca went pale.
Elena looked between them.
“You said you designed that hiding place.”
Rebecca swallowed.
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because Margaret made me promise.”
Elena laughed once.
“Apparently everybody in my life has a secret agreement involving me.”
Margaret's expression softened.
“Your mother trusted me.”
Elena’s anger sharpened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
“She did.”
“Then prove it.”
Margaret reached slowly into her coat.
Adrian’s guards tensed.
She removed a letter.
Old.
Folded.
Elena recognized her mother's handwriting immediately.
For Margaret.
If Elena ever learns the truth.
Her legs weakened.
Margaret handed it over.
Elena opened it.
Margaret,
If Victor comes back, he will go after Elena first.
Adrian may be the only person strong enough to stand against him, but do not force them together. Elena must always choose.
Elena's eyes blurred.
She continued.
The shares are hers. Not Adrian's. Not Victor's. Hers.
If she decides to give them away, let her.
If she decides to burn the whole empire down, help her find matches.
Despite everything, Elena laughed through tears.
That sounded like her mother.
There was more.
And tell Adrian the truth about Catherine.
He deserves to know his mother tried to save him.
Adrian turned away.
Margaret closed her eyes.
“I should have told you years ago.”
“What truth?” Adrian asked.
Margaret took a breath.
“Your mother didn't fall.”
Adrian already knew.
But hearing confirmation was different.
“Victor pushed her.”
Elena's chest tightened.
Adrian did not move.
Margaret continued.
“I arrived minutes later.”
“You saw him?”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
“He threatened you.”
Adrian’s laugh was hollow.
“So you protected me by letting me believe my mother died accidentally.”
“I was afraid.”
“You were a Vale.”
“I was still afraid.”
That silenced him.
Margaret looked at Elena.
“Your mother helped me hide evidence. Sofia became involved because Catherine contacted her before she died.”
“So our mothers knew each other.”
“Yes.”
Elena glanced at Adrian.
Their lives had been connected before either knew.
Margaret continued.
“Victor disappeared twelve years ago because he believed Adrian was finally going to discover the truth.”
“The boat explosion,” Adrian said.
“Staged.”
“Who died?”
“One of Victor's men.”
Adrian looked sick.
“He let me bury someone else.”
“Yes.”
Elena understood now why Adrian's control mattered so much.
It was armor.
If he ever let himself feel all of it at once, it might crush him.
“What does Victor want now?” Elena asked.
Margaret looked at the drive.
“His company.”
“I don't want it.”
“He doesn't care.”
“Then I'll sign it away to Adrian.”
“No,” Adrian said immediately.
Elena turned.
“Why?”
“Because that would make Victor believe I manipulated you.”
“He already believes that.”
“I don't.”
The words stopped her.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You have spent years building something that belongs to you. I'm not going to become another man telling you what to sign.”
Elena remembered Marcus.
Sign here.
Trust me.
Don't worry about the details.
Adrian's refusal struck somewhere deep.
Margaret watched them.
Interesting.
Elena noticed.
“Don't.”
Margaret smiled faintly.
“I said nothing.”
“You were thinking loudly.”
For the first time, tension eased for half a second.
Then Daniel entered.
“We found Victor's vehicle.”
Adrian turned.
“Where?”
“Abandoned two miles away.”
“And Victor?”
“Gone.”
“Rebecca?”
Everyone turned.
The chair beside the computer was empty.
Rebecca was gone.
Elena's stomach dropped.
“When did she leave?”
Daniel checked the security feed.
“She exited through the east hall four minutes ago.”
Adrian cursed.
“Find her.”
Elena looked at the drive.
Still there.
The ring.
Gone.
“The ring.”
Adrian looked.
Empty table.
Margaret went pale.
“She took the key.”
Elena ran.
Adrian followed.
They reached the east corridor as alarms began screaming.
One guard shouted from downstairs.
“Vehicle leaving!”
Adrian grabbed Elena's arm.
“Stay here.”
She pulled free.
“No.”
“Elena.”
“She has my mother's key.”
“You are not chasing a car.”
“Then you chase it.”
Adrian almost argued.
Then nodded.
“Daniel, with me.”
Elena watched them disappear.
Margaret stood beside her.
“You trust him.”
“I've known him less than a day.”
“That wasn't what I said.”
Elena looked away.
“I trust that he hasn't lied to me yet.”
“That's more than Marcus gave you.”
“Low standard.”
“Still.”
Elena crossed her arms.
“What aren't you telling me?”
Margaret looked toward the window.
“About Adrian?”
“About everything.”
Margaret was silent.
Then said, “The ring belonged to Catherine.”
Elena froze.
“Adrian's mother?”
“Yes.”
Elena looked toward the doorway through which he had disappeared.
“Why would Rebecca use that ring?”
“Because Catherine designed it.”
“For what?”
“Not as an engagement ring.”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“It was a hiding place.”
Elena remembered the hollow setting.
“Catherine used to conceal small documents.”
“Microfilm. Keys. Once, a photograph.”
“So my mother had it.”
“After Catherine died.”
“How?”
“She gave it to Sofia.”
Elena sat slowly.
The ring suddenly meant something very different.
It had not been Adrian claiming her.
It had been two dead women protecting their children.
Margaret’s phone rang.
She answered.
Adrian.
Her expression changed.
“What happened?”
She listened.
Then looked at Elena.
“What?”
Margaret put the phone on speaker.
Adrian’s voice.
“We found Rebecca.”
Elena stood.
“Is she okay?”
“Yes.”
“Then where is the ring?”
Silence.
Adrian answered.
“Victor has it.”
Elena's stomach sank.
“How?”
“Rebecca wasn't running from us. She was meeting him.”
Margaret whispered, “Why?”
Rebecca's voice came through faintly.
“Because he has my brother.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Of course.
Another person controlled by someone they loved.
Adrian continued.
“Victor wants an exchange.”
“What exchange?”
“The ring for Elena.”
“No,” Margaret said immediately.
Elena asked, “Where?”
“Elena.”
“Where?”
“Don't.”
“I asked a question.”
Adrian’s voice softened.
“Union Station. Midnight.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
Elena looked at the clock.
Five hours.
Adrian said, “You're not going.”
“He needs my signature.”
“Exactly.”
“So he'll keep me alive.”
“I will not gamble your life.”
“You don't get to decide.”
Silence.
Elena heard his breath.
Then, unexpectedly:
“You're right.”
Margaret looked surprised.
So was Elena.
Adrian continued.
“But if you choose to go, I'm going with you.”
Elena's throat tightened.
“Okay.”
“Wait for me.”
The call ended.
Margaret studied her.
“What?”
“He did something Marcus never did.”
“What?”
“He let you choose.”
Elena looked down at her empty ring finger.
Five hours later, Union Station was nearly empty.
Elena wore black slacks and a coat.
No silk pajamas.
No diamond.
No illusion.
She walked beside Adrian beneath the huge arched ceiling.
Security stayed far enough away to remain invisible.
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“If anything feels wrong, we leave.”
“It already feels wrong.”
“That is not helpful.”
She almost smiled.
At the center of the concourse stood Rebecca.
Alone.
Elena approached.
“Where is Victor?”
Rebecca looked terrified.
“He changed the plan.”
“Where's your brother?”
“I don't know.”
Adrian scanned the station.
“This is a trap.”
Rebecca nodded.
“I know.”
Then every overhead screen went black.
Travel information vanished.
One image appeared.
Elena.
Live.
She was being filmed.
Adrian moved in front of her.
A voice filled the station.
Older.
Controlled.
“Hello, son.”
Adrian froze.
Victor.
“Hello, Elena.”
She looked around.
“Come out.”
Victor laughed.
“Your mother said the same thing once.”
Elena’s blood boiled.
“Don't talk about her.”
“Oh, she was remarkable.”
Adrian whispered, “He's provoking you.”
“I know.”
Victor continued.
“Bring me the drive and sign the transfer.”
“No.”
“Then Rebecca's brother dies.”
Rebecca sobbed.
Elena looked at her.
Victor added, “And Marcus.”
Elena frowned.
Marcus?
Adrian looked toward a side corridor.
A door opened.
Marcus stumbled out.
His hands were tied.
Blood ran from his forehead.
“Elena!”
She stepped forward.
Adrian caught her wrist.
Victor's voice echoed.
“Here is your choice.”
The screens changed.
Two live feeds.
Rebecca’s brother tied to a chair.
Marcus tied to another.
Victor spoke.
“Sign everything back to me, or decide which man goes home.”
Elena stared.
Then a third screen appeared.
Her bakery.
Bell & Rose.
Someone was inside.
A shadow moved behind the counter.
Elena stopped breathing.
Victor’s voice became almost gentle.
“And if you still refuse...”
May you like
Flames flickered in the back room.
“...you can watch your mother's legacy disappear.”
