Chapter 3 - The Bride on Paper

Adrian stared at the security image as though the dead had learned to breathe.
Elena watched him.
For the first time since she had awakened, Adrian Vale looked vulnerable.
Not frightened.
Wounded.
“Your father is dead,” she said.
“He was.”
Marcus laughed from across the library.
Adrian turned toward him so quickly that both guards tensed.
Marcus lifted his hands.
“I told you.”
Adrian ignored him.
“Bring Rebecca inside.”
His security chief hesitated.
“And the vehicle?”
“Seal every exit.”
“What if the driver leaves?”
“He won't.”
“How can you know?”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“Because if that's really my father, he came here to be seen.”
Five minutes later, Rebecca Shaw entered the library.
Elena barely recognized her.
Rebecca had always been immaculate.
Tailored dresses.
Perfect blond bob.
Perfect posture.
The woman who entered Adrian’s home wore torn jeans, an oversized coat, and bruises around one wrist.
She clutched the silver drive so tightly her knuckles were white.
“Elena.”
Elena wanted to hug her.
She also wanted to scream.
Instead she said, “You have exactly one chance to tell me the truth.”
Rebecca nodded.
“I know.”
Adrian pointed toward a chair.
“Sit.”
Rebecca remained standing.
“I won't stay long.”
“You crossed my gate carrying evidence connected to my supposedly dead father.”
“That is precisely why I won't stay long.”
Adrian studied her.
Then nodded.
“Talk.”
Rebecca turned to Elena.
“Your mother hired me.”
Elena froze.
“When?”
“Five years ago.”
“My mother died four years ago.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca looked at the silver drive.
“Six months before her death, Sofia Ramirez asked me to create a legal contingency plan.”
Elena's throat tightened at the sound of her mother's name.
“She believed somebody might eventually come looking for files she had taken from Vale Strategic.”
Adrian spoke.
“What files?”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Records proving your father had been laundering money through dozens of legitimate businesses.”
Marcus interrupted.
“That's what I told you.”
Rebecca snapped toward him.
“You don't get to speak.”
Marcus's face hardened.
Rebecca returned to Elena.
“Your mother didn't trust law enforcement completely. She had tried reaching out before. Someone leaked her name.”
“So she hired you.”
“To make sure the evidence would survive her.”
Elena looked at the drive.
“Why hide it with me?”
“Because you were not connected to any of this.”
“Until Marcus.”
Rebecca's eyes shifted toward him.
“Until Marcus.”
Elena felt fury building.
“You knew what he was doing?”
“Not initially.”
“You prepared the Northbridge agreement.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Marcus told me he wanted to bring an investor into Bell & Rose.”
“You didn't call me.”
“I should have.”
“That isn't an answer.”
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
“He threatened me.”
“With what?”
“My younger brother had gambling debts.”
Adrian looked at her.
“To whom?”
Rebecca hesitated.
“Victor Vale.”
Silence.
Adrian's father.
The allegedly dead man outside.
Elena almost laughed because reality had become too absurd to process.
“So your dead father was blackmailing my attorney through her brother while my ex was forging my signature?”
Adrian’s face was stone.
“Yes.”
“Great.”
She sat heavily.
“Wonderful.”
Rebecca took one step toward her.
“Elena, I'm sorry.”
“Where were you last night?”
Rebecca's expression changed.
“Hiding.”
“With the drive?”
“Yes.”
“Why did Marcus think you were bringing it to the warehouse?”
“Because I told him I would.”
Marcus stared.
“You set me up?”
“I tried to.”
“For who?”
“For Victor.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
Rebecca took a breath.
“Victor contacted me six weeks ago. He knew Marcus had found Sofia's drive. He wanted it back.”
“How did he know?” Elena asked.
“Marcus.”
Elena turned toward her ex.
His face confirmed everything.
“You told him.”
“I didn't know who he was.”
“You told a stranger about my mother's evidence?”
“He already knew!”
“How?”
“He knew details nobody else could know.”
Rebecca interrupted.
“Marcus became useful to Victor because Marcus had access to you.”
Elena's stomach twisted.
Rebecca continued.
“The plan was simple. Force Bell & Rose into a financial crisis. Then push you into accepting Northbridge as an investor. Once Northbridge controlled the company, Victor could legally search the business records and seize the drive if it was stored there.”
“But it wasn't.”
“No.”
“Where was it?”
Rebecca looked at the diamond on Elena's hand.
Everyone followed her gaze.
Elena slowly lowered her hand.
“Why are you looking at my ring?”
Rebecca swallowed.
“Because that is not Adrian's ring.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
Elena stood.
“You told everyone it was.”
“I told them you were under my protection. The ring was already on you when I found you.”
Elena’s skin went cold.
“I thought it came from you.”
“It didn't.”
Rebecca approached.
“May I?”
Elena hesitated.
Then extended her hand.
Rebecca examined the ring closely.
Her thumb moved beneath the setting.
Click.
The diamond lifted.
Elena gasped.
Inside the hollow base was a tiny metallic chip.
Rebecca removed it.
Adrian cursed softly.
“What is that?”
Rebecca looked at Elena.
“The real key.”
“To the drive?”
“Yes.”
Elena stared.
“My mother hid this?”
“No.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“I did.”
“Last night?”
“Yes.”
Elena pulled her hand back.
“You put this ring on me.”
Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.
“I needed to get the key out of the warehouse.”
“So you drugged me?”
“No!”
“Then who did?”
Rebecca looked toward Marcus.
He shook his head.
“I swear it wasn't me.”
Adrian said quietly, “Victor.”
Rebecca nodded.
“I think so.”
Elena struggled to breathe.
“Tell me everything.”
Rebecca clasped both hands.
“I arrived at the warehouse early. Victor's men were already there. Marcus came next. Then you appeared.”
“I followed him.”
“Yes.”
“You saw me?”
“You walked straight into a meeting full of men who were arguing over your life.”
“That sounds like me.”
Rebecca gave a sad smile.
“You started recording.”
“With my phone.”
“Yes.”
“Then what?”
“Victor entered.”
Adrian's expression darkened.
“Elena saw him?”
“Yes.”
Adrian turned toward Elena.
“Do you remember?”
She closed her eyes.
Fragments.
A tall older man.
Silver hair.
A cane.
A voice saying, Tell my son he still owes me everything.
Her eyes snapped open.
“I saw him.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Victor recognized you immediately as Sofia's daughter.”
Elena’s blood chilled.
“What did he do?”
“He offered Marcus a deal.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Rebecca continued.
“Victor said Marcus's debt would disappear if Marcus handed him the drive and convinced Elena to sign the Northbridge transfer.”
“And Marcus agreed?”
Rebecca looked at Marcus.
“He didn't say no.”
Elena felt something break inside her.
Marcus stepped forward.
“I was buying time.”
“You keep buying time with pieces of my life.”
“Elena—”
“No.”
Her voice sharpened.
“No more.”
He fell silent.
Rebecca continued.
“Then Victor demanded the key.”
“The one in the ring.”
“Yes.”
“Why put it on me?”
“Because everyone was watching me.”
Rebecca's voice shook.
“I slipped it into the ring while pretending to help you after you became dizzy.”
“So somebody had already drugged me.”
“Yes.”
“Then Adrian arrived?”
“No.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Adrian arrived five minutes later.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“I received a message that Marcus was meeting Victor’s group.”
“Did you know Victor would be there?”
“No.”
Rebecca continued.
“When Adrian walked in, Victor left through the rear exit.”
“Why didn't you tell me my father was alive?” Adrian demanded.
“Because I didn't know whether you were working with him.”
The accusation hung between them.
Adrian did not look offended.
He looked like a man who understood why she had thought it.
Elena studied him.
“You really didn't know.”
“No.”
“How?”
“My father's death was very convincing.”
“What happened?”
“Boat explosion off Lake Michigan.”
“No body?”
“Fragments.”
Rebecca looked uneasy.
“Apparently not his.”
Adrian turned away.
Elena watched the muscles in his shoulders tighten.
For all his control, this was personal.
She understood that.
Dead parents did not become easier simply because dangerous secrets surrounded them.
Rebecca held out the silver drive.
“The key unlocks the encrypted files.”
Elena did not take it.
“What exactly is on there?”
“Everything Sofia copied.”
“About Victor?”
“And other people.”
“Including Adrian?”
Rebecca looked at him.
“No.”
Adrian’s gaze snapped toward her.
“No?”
“Your mother appears several times.”
Adrian froze.
“My mother died before my father.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Elena's mother believed Victor was responsible.”
Silence swallowed the room.
Elena looked at Adrian.
Something in his face changed completely.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
A suspicion he had carried alone.
“My mother fell down a staircase,” he said.
Rebecca said nothing.
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“I was eighteen.”
“Elena's mother believed the fall was staged.”
Adrian turned away.
Elena felt an unexpected urge to reach for him.
She resisted.
Rebecca placed the drive on the desk.
“We need to open this somewhere disconnected from every network.”
Adrian nodded toward his security chief.
“Prepare the vault office.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“I’m coming.”
“No,” Elena said.
He stared at her.
“Elena.”
“You forged my name.”
“I can help.”
“You already helped enough.”
Marcus’s desperation returned.
“If Victor knows you have the key, he won't stop.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Neither will I.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You think this is about money?”
“What is it about?”
Marcus looked at Elena.
“Her.”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus's eyes filled with fear.
“Victor didn't choose Bell & Rose because of the drive.”
Rebecca frowned.
“Yes, he did.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because Sofia left Elena something else.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
Marcus swallowed.
“A controlling interest.”
Adrian went still.
“In what?”
Marcus looked toward him.
“Vale Strategic.”
Adrian’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“Impossible.”
“Your father used Sofia as a nominee when he was hiding assets. Years ago, he placed shares in her name.”
Rebecca looked shocked.
“I never saw that.”
“Because the documents weren't on the drive.”
“Where are they?”
Marcus looked at Elena's hand.
“Her mother's jewelry case.”
Elena remembered it instantly.
The small wooden box.
The one she had been unable to open after the funeral.
She had put it into storage.
Then moved.
Then—
“Marcus.”
He closed his eyes.
“What did you do with the box?”
“I found it two years ago.”
Her voice cracked.
“Where is it?”
“I gave it to Victor.”
Adrian crossed the room so fast Marcus barely had time to react.
He seized Marcus by the collar.
“Where?”
Marcus struggled.
“I don't know!”
Adrian shoved him back.
Elena stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Adrian released him.
Marcus coughed.
Then looked at Elena.
“There’s another reason Victor needs you.”
“What?”
“If those shares are real, they passed to you when your mother died.”
Elena shook her head.
“I don't want his company.”
“It doesn't matter.”
“Why?”
Marcus stared at Adrian.
“Because Victor cannot legally reclaim control of his empire while Elena is alive.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian's phone vibrated.
He looked at the message.
His face changed.
“What?” Elena asked.
Adrian slowly turned the screen toward her.
A photograph had arrived.
It showed Elena sleeping the previous night.
The diamond ring already on her hand.
Someone had taken the picture inside Adrian's mansion.
Beneath it were five words.
THANK YOU FOR BRINGING HER HOME.
Elena stared at the photograph.
Adrian looked toward the bedroom hallway above them.
His security chief whispered, “Sir...”
“What?”
“We've checked the access logs.”
Adrian’s gaze sharpened.
“And?”
The guard looked at Elena.
“The photograph was taken at 3:12 a.m.”
Elena's heart stopped.
May you like
The guard continued.
“From inside your bedroom.”
