Chapter 4 - The Man Behind the Betrayal

The entire estate went into lockdown.

Nobody entered.

Nobody left.

Adrian ordered every employee moved to the west wing while security reviewed footage.

Elena sat inside the vault office with Rebecca and the encrypted drive.

She was tired of being frightened.

Fear had started becoming anger.

That felt better.

Adrian entered twenty minutes later.

“Anything?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“The encryption requires two factors.”

Elena held up the ring.

“We have one.”

“And the second?”

“A phrase.”

Elena frowned.

“What phrase?”

“Your mother created it.”

Elena looked at the screen.

PASSWORD HINT:

THE FIRST THING WE BUILT TOGETHER.

Her chest tightened.

Bell & Rose?

No.

Her mother had helped at the bakery, but Elena built it later.

The first thing they built together.

She thought of childhood.

Craft projects.

School displays.

A crooked birdhouse.

Birthday cakes.

Then she remembered.

“A garden.”

Rebecca looked at her.

“What?”

“When I was seven, Mom let me plant roses behind our apartment building.”

“What did you call it?”

Elena smiled despite herself.

“Impossible Garden.”

Rebecca typed it.

Access denied.

Adrian leaned against the desk.

“What kind of roses?”

“Elena roses.”

Rebecca looked over.

“Were they actually called that?”

“No. Mom bought cheap red roses from a hardware store and told me they were named after me.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Elena thought again.

The first thing we built together.

Not planted.

Built.

Then she remembered her mother's wooden recipe box.

Elena had been nine.

They painted it together.

Green with white trim.

Exactly like Bell & Rose branding years later.

“The recipe box.”

“What did you write on it?”

Elena closed her eyes.

Her mother had painted three words inside the lid.

MAKE SOMETHING SWEET.

Rebecca typed.

The screen changed.

ACCESS GRANTED.

Hundreds of folders appeared.

Adrian straightened.

Rebecca opened the first.

Corporate records.

Transfers.

Names.

Dates.

Photographs.

One file was labeled VICTOR VALE — CONTINGENCY.

Rebecca clicked.

A video appeared.

Elena's mother filled the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably alive.

Elena stopped breathing.

Sofia Ramirez looked directly into the camera.

“If Elena is watching this, then I failed to keep you out of it.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Adrian quietly stepped closer.

Sofia continued.

“I'm sorry, mi amor.”

Elena's eyes filled.

“I wanted you to have a life untouched by these people.”

She explained the beginning simply.

Twenty-three years earlier, Sofia had worked as an accountant for Victor Vale.

She discovered hidden transfers.

Victor asked her to sign documents.

She refused.

Then he offered money.

She refused again.

Finally he used her identity without permission.

That mistake created a trail.

Sofia copied everything.

But the biggest revelation came next.

“Victor placed seventeen percent of Vale Strategic under my name because he believed nobody would look at a bookkeeper.”

Adrian swore softly.

Sofia continued.

“He expected me to sign it back later.”

She hadn't.

Instead, when she realized Victor was laundering criminal money through legitimate corporations, she quietly preserved the shares as leverage.

“When I die, those shares pass to Elena.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

“This is insane.”

He remained focused on the video.

Sofia continued.

“Adrian Vale is not his father.”

Adrian went still.

“If Adrian is watching this, your mother tried to leave Victor. She was afraid of him.”

His face changed.

Sofia's voice softened.

“Your mother contacted me two weeks before she died.”

Adrian moved closer to the screen.

“She told me Victor had discovered she was collecting evidence. She believed he would hurt her.”

Adrian looked away.

Elena touched his wrist.

This time, deliberately.

He looked at her.

She did not say anything.

She didn't need to.

Onscreen, Sofia continued.

“There is one person Victor cannot control.”

A photograph appeared.

A younger Adrian.

Maybe twenty-two.

“He fears his son because Adrian has the loyalty Victor lost.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“He also fears Elena because legally, she holds what he needs.”

The video ended.

Silence.

Rebecca opened another file.

A legal instrument.

Transfer of shares.

Sofia Ramirez to Elena Ramirez.

Seventeen percent.

Effective upon death.

Elena stared.

“I own part of Vale Strategic?”

Adrian gave a humorless laugh.

“Apparently more than several members of my board.”

“I don't want it.”

“It may be why you're alive.”

Elena looked at him.

“Explain.”

“Victor needs those shares transferred voluntarily.”

“Why voluntarily?”

“Because your mother's contingency includes restrictions.”

Rebecca scanned the agreement.

“She’s right.”

“What restrictions?”

“If Elena dies before authorizing a transfer, the shares are automatically assigned to a public charitable trust.”

Adrian nodded.

“Victor gets nothing.”

Elena sank into the chair.

“So he can't kill me.”

“He can threaten you.”

“Or force me.”

Adrian's eyes became cold.

“Not while I'm breathing.”

The words hung between them.

Elena looked away first.

Rebecca opened another folder.

“There's something about Marcus.”

Elena's stomach tightened.

A series of emails appeared.

Marcus communicating with Northbridge.

The earliest dated eight months before their breakup.

Eight months.

They had still been planning their wedding.

Rebecca read silently.

Then stopped.

“Oh God.”

“What?”

She rotated the screen.

One email from Marcus.

IF ELENA WON'T SIGN, I CAN GET HER TO MARRY ME FIRST. SPOUSAL AUTHORITY GIVES US OPTIONS.

Elena felt physically ill.

Adrian’s fist tightened.

Elena scrolled.

Another message.

VICTOR: KEEP HER EMOTIONALLY DEPENDENT. DO NOT LET HER DISCOVER THE SHARES.

Marcus: SHE TRUSTS ME.

Elena stared at those three words.

SHE TRUSTS ME.

That hurt more than the debt.

More than the forgery.

She had trusted him.

He had known exactly what that trust was worth.

Adrian reached toward the screen.

Elena stopped him.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I want to read it.”

“You don't have to.”

“Yes, I do.”

She scrolled.

Messages about manipulating her.

Convincing her to sell.

Isolating her from Rebecca.

Making her believe business problems were her fault.

One line made her hands shake.

MARCUS: AFTER THE WEDDING, SHE'LL SIGN WHATEVER I PUT IN FRONT OF HER.

Elena stood.

“I want to see him.”

Adrian studied her.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Marcus was brought into the office.

He saw the screen.

His face collapsed.

“Elena.”

She stood in front of him.

“No excuses.”

“I was trapped.”

“No excuses.”

“I loved you.”

Elena looked at him quietly.

Then she smiled.

It wasn't kind.

“No, Marcus.”

His eyes filled.

“You loved having someone who believed you were better than you were.”

He shook his head.

“I was going to get out.”

“When?”

“I don't know.”

“You were going to marry me.”

“Yes.”

“Because you loved me?”

He hesitated.

That hesitation finished something inside her.

Elena removed the diamond ring.

Everyone watched.

She placed it on the table.

“This wasn't yours.”

“No.”

“But you would have put one on me anyway.”

Marcus looked down.

Elena turned away.

“Take him out.”

Marcus panicked.

“Elena, wait!”

She didn't.

“I can help you stop Victor!”

Adrian nodded to the guards.

Marcus shouted as they dragged him toward the door.

“He has someone inside the house!”

Everyone froze.

Adrian turned.

“Who?”

Marcus laughed desperately.

“You think I knew where Elena would be brought?”

Adrian's face changed.

Marcus continued.

“Victor knew before I did.”

“Name.”

“I don't know.”

Adrian grabbed him.

“Name.”

“I don't know!”

“Then what do you know?”

Marcus swallowed.

“A phrase.”

“What phrase?”

“He told me that when Elena woke up wearing the ring, someone would make sure she stayed where she belonged.”

Elena’s pulse pounded.

Adrian slowly released him.

Rebecca whispered, “The photograph.”

Someone had entered Elena's bedroom.

Someone inside Adrian’s estate.

Security chief Daniel Cross appeared at the doorway.

Adrian looked at him.

“Did you find the breach?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No forced entry.”

“Then it was staff.”

“Possibly.”

“Possibly?”

Daniel handed him a tablet.

“There was one authorized entry at 3:09.”

Adrian looked at the name.

His expression went blank.

Elena stepped closer.

“Who?”

Adrian did not answer.

She took the tablet.

The access record showed one name.

MARGARET VALE.

Elena frowned.

“Who's Margaret?”

Adrian stared toward the hallway.

“My aunt.”

“Does she live here?”

“No.”

“Then why does she have access?”

“She doesn't.”

A voice came from behind them.

An older woman's voice.

Calm.

Elegant.

“Oh, Adrian.”

Everyone turned.

A silver-haired woman stood in the doorway.

No guard had announced her.

No footsteps had warned them.

She looked directly at Elena.

Then at the ring on the table.

May you like

And smiled.

“You really should have asked who gave Rebecca the ring.”
