Chapter 9 - The Dead Man's Safe-Deposit Box

Nobody moved.
Three knocks.
The same signal Curtis had used every Friday.
Marcus checked the camera.
"No one there."
Adrian opened the door himself.
An envelope lay on the step.
Inside was a key.
And an address.
Mara recognized neither.
Daniel did.
"Gabriel's apartment."
Adrian stared at him.
"Gabriel didn't have an apartment there."
"Not officially."
They drove across the city in silence.
Mara refused to sit beside Daniel.
Adrian didn't press her.
The address led to a tiny apartment above a closed tailor shop.
The key opened the door.
Nothing had been touched in years.
Gabriel's hidden life remained preserved beneath dust.
Adrian walked slowly through the rooms.
Mara realized he had never known this place existed.
On the desk sat a letter.
FOR ADRIAN.
His hands hesitated before opening it.
Brother,
If you're reading this, I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.
Mother controls Lantern.
Father discovered it too late.
He tried to stop her.
She arranged his death.
Adrian sat down.
Mara had never seen him look physically wounded before.
Gabriel's letter continued.
Do not become what she taught you to be.
She will tell you power means controlling everyone around you.
She's wrong.
Power is giving someone the choice to walk away and protecting that choice even when it hurts you.
Mara watched Adrian read the sentence twice.
There was another letter.
FOR MARA ELLIS.
Mara opened it.
Gabriel had known about her.
He wrote that Daniel originally accepted Vivienne's money to locate Subject M17.
But after meeting Mara, Daniel changed sides.
He married her because he loved her.
He stayed involved with Lantern because he was trying to destroy it.
That didn't erase his deception.
But it made the truth more complicated.
At the bottom:
If Lucy exists someday, protect her from all of us.
Mara closed her eyes.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
"I loved you."
She looked at him.
"I believe you."
Hope appeared.
Then she added, "That doesn't fix what you did."
Hope disappeared.
"I know."
"You stole my right to choose."
"Yes."
"You decided ignorance was protection."
"Yes."
"And when Lucy grows up, you will never do that to her."
Daniel nodded.
"Never."
It wasn't forgiveness.
But it was the first honest thing between them.
Adrian found a floor safe.
Inside was evidence Gabriel had assembled against Vivienne.
Financial transfers.
Medical records.
Audio recordings.
Enough to expose Lantern.
Almost.
One crucial file was missing.
The original embryo-treatment registry.
Without it, Vivienne could claim the records were fabricated.
Celeste had the registry.
That was why she had been taken.
Mara looked at Adrian.
"We go tomorrow."
"No."
"She's my sister."
"Exactly."
"You don't control me."
Gabriel's letter lay between them.
Adrian glanced at it.
Then, reluctantly, he nodded.
"No. I don't."
Mara was surprised.
"But if you choose to go, we design it properly."
"Architect?"
His mouth curved faintly.
"Unfortunately."
They spent the next twelve hours building Vivienne's collapse.
Adrian contacted federal investigators through an attorney.
Copies of Gabriel's evidence went to multiple journalists with timed-release encryption.
Daniel prepared testimony.
Hale, finally located in hiding, agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection.
Curtis regained consciousness and agreed too.
Vivienne believed she was summoning one frightened woman.
Instead, Mara would bring an entire case.
That evening Mara found Adrian alone on the balcony.
"You could leave," she said.
"So could you."
"She's your mother."
"Biology isn't absolution."
Mara leaned against the railing.
"Daniel and I are finished."
Adrian looked at her.
"I wasn't asking."
"I know."
"Then why tell me?"
"Because I wanted you to know."
Silence.
He stepped closer.
Mara's heart accelerated.
"This would be a terrible time to kiss you," he said.
"Probably."
"Your life is in danger."
"Yes."
"My mother is trying to kidnap you."
"Also yes."
"Your legally dead husband is downstairs."
"You're making a strong argument against it."
His gaze dropped to her mouth.
Mara whispered, "But our first kiss had terrible timing too."
This time she didn't grab him.
She waited.
So did he.
Choice.
Then Mara closed the distance.
The kiss was nothing like the first.
Slow.
Careful.
Adrian touched her face as though she could change her mind at any moment.
When they separated, he rested his forehead against hers.
"No more borrowed faces," he murmured.
"No more strangers."
Her phone vibrated.
The moment vanished.
A message from Celeste.
MARA, I'M FREE. DON'T COME TO ST. ARDEN.
Then another.
VIVIENNE KNOWS THE PLAN.
Adrian took the phone.
A third message arrived.
SHE HAS LUCY'S SCHOOL ADDRESS.
Mara's blood froze.
They ran upstairs.
Lucy's bed was empty.
The window was closed.
No broken lock.
No alarm.
On the pillow lay her stuffed rabbit.
Its stomach had been carefully cut open.
Inside was the missing Lantern registry.
And a note in Lucy's handwriting:
MOMMY, THE BLONDE LADY SAID WE HAVE TO RUN.
Mara reached for her phone.
Before she could dial, the security monitor lit up.
Lucy appeared on camera.
Holding Celeste's hand.
May you like
Standing outside St. Arden Medical Center.
Then Vivienne Vale stepped into the frame behind them...
