Chapter 10 - The Architect's Weakness

Mara was already moving.
Adrian caught her at the stairs.
"Not alone."
"Lucy is there."
"And Vivienne expects you to stop thinking because Lucy is there."
"She's five!"
"I know."
"Then move."
Something in Mara's voice ended the argument.
They drove to St. Arden.
Daniel insisted on coming.
Adrian allowed it only because Daniel knew the underground service network.
Police remained several blocks away.
Vivienne had threatened to kill Celeste if she saw uniforms.
At the hospital, the public floors appeared normal.
Doctors walked.
Phones rang.
Patients slept.
Yet beneath the ordinary life, a twenty-year crime was reaching its end.
They entered through the loading dock.
Daniel led them downstairs.
"Old research wing."
The corridor terminated at a steel door.
Mara heard Lucy crying beyond it.
"Mommy!"
She lunged.
Adrian stopped her.
A camera watched above the door.
Vivienne's voice came through a speaker.
"Adrian."
His face became unreadable.
"Mother."
"You brought Daniel."
"You expected me to."
"And Mara."
"Let Lucy go."
Vivienne laughed.
"You always did mistake attachment for weakness."
"No."
Adrian looked directly into the camera.
"You taught me that."
A pause.
Then the lock clicked.
They entered.
Vivienne Vale stood in the old laboratory.
Elegant.
Silver-streaked hair.
Black dress.
No weapon visible.
Two armed men stood beside her.
Celeste sat restrained.
Lucy was beside her.
Unhurt.
Mara's entire body pulled toward her daughter.
"Mommy!"
"I'm here, baby."
Vivienne studied Mara.
"You look like Evelyn."
"Where is my mother?"
Vivienne smiled.
"Still asking the wrong question."
"What is the right one?"
"Why did Evelyn abandon two daughters but only hide one?"
Mara looked at Celeste.
Vivienne continued.
"Because one of you was treated before birth."
"The registry tells us which."
"Does it?"
Mara's stomach tightened.
Vivienne smiled.
"The registry in Lucy's rabbit is fake."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"You planted it."
"Celeste did, at my instruction."
Celeste shouted, "She's lying!"
One guard struck her chair.
Mara flinched.
Adrian didn't.
But his gaze recorded everything.
Vivienne approached him.
"My beautiful son. Still pretending restraint makes you different from me."
"I don't need to pretend."
"You built an empire on fear."
"I built it after watching you use fear against our family."
"And you became magnificent."
"No."
Adrian's voice remained quiet.
"I became lonely."
Vivienne's smile faded.
It was the first wound he landed.
Then Adrian said, "And you mistook that loneliness for loyalty."
A phone rang.
Vivienne's guard answered.
His face changed.
"What?"
Across the city, Adrian's design had begun.
Accounts frozen.
Board members arrested.
Servers seized.
Evidence released.
Donors withdrawing.
Every support beneath Vivienne's world disappearing simultaneously.
The Architect wasn't destroying her.
He was removing the architecture that protected her.
Vivienne stared at Adrian.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing you didn't build yourself."
She slapped him.
Adrian didn't move.
Lucy screamed.
Mara surged forward.
One guard grabbed her.
Daniel attacked him.
Chaos erupted.
Adrian struck the second guard.
Celeste tipped her chair sideways.
Mara reached Lucy.
She pulled her daughter against her.
"Close your eyes."
A gunshot exploded.
Everyone stopped.
Daniel staggered.
Blood appeared across his shirt.
"Mara..."
He fell.
She screamed.
Adrian disarmed the shooter.
Marcus and his team stormed the room.
Vivienne fled through a rear door.
Mara dropped beside Daniel.
Nurse instincts took over.
Pressure.
Airway.
Bleeding.
"Stay with me."
Daniel looked at Lucy.
"I'm sorry."
"No goodbyes," Mara snapped.
"Mara—"
"No."
Paramedics arrived.
Daniel was carried out alive.
Barely.
Celeste was freed.
Mara finally embraced the sister she had never known.
For one second, neither spoke.
Then Celeste whispered:
"Mom is alive."
Mara pulled back.
"Where?"
"Vivienne has kept her hidden for twenty-nine years."
"Where?"
Celeste looked toward the rear door.
"Under this hospital."
Adrian returned.
His hands were bloodied.
"Vivienne escaped into the old tunnels."
Mara stood.
"Then that's where my mother is."
Adrian shook his head.
"You stay with Lucy."
Mara looked at Celeste.
Then at Adrian.
"No."
He started to object.
She stepped close.
"You told me protection without choice is a prison."
His jaw tightened.
He knew she'd won.
"Lucy goes with Marcus."
Mara kissed her daughter's forehead.
"I'll come back."
"Promise?"
Mara looked into her eyes.
"Promise."
Marcus took Lucy.
Adrian opened the tunnel door.
Dark stairs descended beneath St. Arden.
Celeste switched on a flashlight.
At the bottom they found a locked room.
Mara's hands trembled.
A woman's voice came from the other side.
Weak.
Older.
But unmistakably similar to Mara's own.
"Celeste?"
Mara touched the handle.
"No."
Silence.
Then Mara whispered:
"It's Mara."
Something fell inside the room.
May you like
Footsteps approached.
The lock began turning from the other side...
