Chapter 12 - The House Beneath St. Arden

Vivienne's laughter followed them upstairs.
Adrian said nothing until they returned to the hospital.
Then he asked Evelyn for everything.
Project Lantern had begun with him.
As a child, Adrian had suffered from a rare inherited immune disorder.
Vivienne refused to accept that no cure existed.
She funded experimental research.
Evelyn Mercer, then a young geneticist, joined the program believing it was legitimate.
The early work helped Adrian.
Then Vivienne demanded more.
Children became test subjects.
Families became genetic resources.
Mara and Celeste were born to one of those lines.
"So all of this," Adrian said, "was for me."
"No," Mara replied.
He looked at her.
"She did it because she wanted control over death. That's not the same as doing it for you."
Evelyn nodded.
"You were a sick child. You didn't consent."
Adrian's face remained hard.
But Mara saw the guilt.
Later she found him alone in the chapel.
"I've spent my life punishing people who hurt those weaker than themselves."
Mara sat beside him.
"And now you discovered someone hurt them in your name."
"Yes."
"That doesn't make it your crime."
"It made my life possible."
Mara took his hand.
"Then make the life they bought into something they would hate."
He looked at her.
A faint smile appeared.
"That sounds vindictive."
"I've been spending too much time with you."
He laughed.
Actually laughed.
It was the first time she heard it.
Then Warren Hale entered the chapel.
He carried the real master registry.
"I owe both of you an explanation."
Adrian stood.
Hale didn't retreat.
He admitted helping Vivienne for years.
Fear.
Money.
Cowardice.
Then Gabriel confronted him.
Gabriel had forced Hale to see the children as people again.
Hale began feeding evidence to Daniel.
"Why pretend not to know me at the gala?" Mara asked.
"Because Vivienne was watching."
"She was there?"
"No. Her people were."
"Why was Curtis there?"
"To warn you."
Mara remembered the orange juice.
The threats.
The changed routine.
Curtis had deliberately driven her from the ballroom.
Into the corridor.
Toward Adrian.
"Did Curtis know Adrian was there?"
Hale shook his head.
"That part was chance."
Adrian looked at Mara.
"Apparently you really did choose the worst possible stranger."
"Debatable."
His eyebrow lifted.
Hale cleared his throat.
Mara almost smiled.
Then Hale became serious.
"There's another problem."
The master registry documented hundreds of crimes.
But one name appeared repeatedly beside Vivienne's authorization.
A silent partner.
Someone who had inherited Mercer Foundation control.
Evelyn's father was dead.
So who had continued signing?
Hale placed a photograph on the pew.
Mara stared.
The man was familiar.
She had seen him at the gala.
Standing beside the stage.
Mayor Thomas Mercer.
Her biological uncle.
"He knew?" Mara asked.
"He still knows."
Adrian's expression sharpened.
"Where is he?"
"Running for governor."
Mara felt sick.
The conspiracy wasn't dead.
Vivienne had been one pillar.
Thomas Mercer was another.
And he controlled enough political influence to bury an investigation.
Adrian picked up the registry.
"No."
Hale frowned.
"No what?"
"He doesn't bury anything."
The Architect had found the final structure.
And he began designing the collapse.
Evidence was duplicated.
Victims were contacted.
Federal prosecutors received sealed testimony.
Reporters obtained financial records.
Families were offered independent attorneys.
Adrian refused to let his own organization control the information.
Mara noticed.
"Why?"
"Because Gabriel was right."
"About?"
"Power is giving people choices."
The next morning Thomas Mercer held a press conference.
He denied everything.
Called Vivienne unstable.
Called Hale corrupt.
Called Daniel a fraud.
Then he mentioned Mara.
"A troubled former foster child seeking money and attention."
Mara watched from Adrian's library.
Her jaw tightened.
Adrian switched off the television.
"You don't have to answer him."
"Yes, I do."
At noon Mara stood before cameras.
Not as a Mercer.
Not as Subject M17.
As Mara Ellis.
Emergency nurse.
Mother.
Survivor.
She spoke about children whose names had been reduced to numbers.
She revealed no private medical information.
She made no dramatic accusation she couldn't prove.
She simply read names.
Seven children injured in the early trials.
Three families destroyed.
Elaine Porter, still missing.
Gabriel Vale, dead.
The country listened.
Thomas Mercer began losing allies within hours.
That evening, a federal warrant was issued.
But Mercer disappeared.
At 11:43 p.m., Mara returned to Adrian's estate.
Lucy was asleep.
Evelyn and Celeste were together downstairs.
Daniel remained hospitalized.
For the first time in days, Mara believed they might survive.
Then she entered Lucy's room.
A window stood open.
Her daughter was still sleeping.
Nothing appeared disturbed.
Except one thing.
A wet footprint on the floor.
Adrian followed the prints.
They led to the library.
The door was closed.
A light glowed underneath.
Mara reached for the handle.
May you like
It was already unlocked from the inside.
Someone was waiting for her.
