Chapter 11 - The Night Lucy Disappeared

The door opened.
A thin woman stood beneath the dim light.
Her blonde hair had gone mostly silver.
Her face was older than the photograph Sister Catherine had shown Mara.
But her eyes were the same.
Evelyn Mercer touched Mara's cheek.
"My baby."
Mara couldn't move.
Twenty-nine years of questions disappeared beneath two words.
Then she fell into her mother's arms.
Celeste joined them.
Three women held one another in a room built to keep them apart.
Adrian turned away.
Giving them privacy even while watching the tunnel.
Evelyn had been imprisoned intermittently for decades.
Vivienne kept her alive because Evelyn knew where the original Lantern registry was hidden.
"She never found it," Evelyn said.
"Where is it?" Celeste asked.
Evelyn looked at Mara.
"With Warren Hale."
Mara almost laughed from disbelief.
"Hale?"
"He helped me after he realized what Lantern had become. He was a coward many times. But not every time."
A distant explosion shook dust from the ceiling.
Adrian turned.
"Vivienne."
Smoke entered the tunnel.
They moved.
By the time they reached the surface, emergency crews were evacuating St. Arden.
Mara searched for Marcus.
"Lucy?"
No answer.
"Where's Lucy?"
Marcus appeared from the ambulance bay.
His face told her before he spoke.
"She was with Rosa in the secure vehicle."
Mara's heart stopped.
"Was?"
"Vehicle was hit during evacuation. Rosa is alive."
"And Lucy?"
Marcus swallowed.
"Gone."
Mara turned toward Adrian.
He looked devastated.
"No," she whispered.
Then louder:
"No."
Adrian grabbed his phone.
Every camera.
Every traffic feed.
Every contact.
The city became a search grid.
Mara refused to collapse.
Vivienne wanted her desperate.
Desperation had already controlled eighteen months of her life.
Not again.
Rosa remembered a white medical van.
Hale recognized the description.
St. Arden mobile genetics unit.
Its GPS had been disabled.
But Daniel, conscious after emergency surgery, provided one clue.
"Old Mercer estate."
Mara stood beside his hospital bed.
"Where?"
"Bayou road south of the city."
He struggled to breathe.
"Mara... I'm sorry."
She looked at him.
"I know."
"I loved you."
"I know that too."
His eyes filled.
"Is there any chance—"
"No."
Pain crossed his face.
But Mara didn't lie.
Then she took his hand.
"But Lucy needs her father. If you want to spend the rest of your life becoming someone she can trust, survive."
Daniel nodded.
It was not the ending he wanted.
But it was honest.
At the Mercer estate, they found the medical van.
Empty.
Inside was Lucy's yellow hair ribbon.
Mara pressed it to her lips.
Adrian searched the house.
No Lucy.
No Vivienne.
Then Evelyn noticed a childhood symbol carved into the fireplace.
A lantern.
She pressed it.
A hidden door opened.
Stairs descended.
Mara went first.
At the bottom was a laboratory.
Old.
Abandoned.
One light remained on.
Lucy sat in a chair.
Alive.
Vivienne stood behind her.
Mara stopped.
"Let her go."
Vivienne smiled.
"Bring me Evelyn."
"No."
"Then Lucy stays."
Lucy looked at Mara.
"I'm not scared, Mommy."
Mara nearly broke.
"I know, baby."
Vivienne held a syringe.
Adrian stepped from the shadows.
"Mother."
Vivienne's smile widened.
"There you are."
"You don't want Lucy."
"No."
"You want the registry."
"Yes."
Adrian held up a folder.
Mara looked at him.
She hadn't known he had it.
Vivienne's eyes sharpened.
"Where did you get that?"
"Warren."
So Hale had finally chosen a side.
Adrian approached.
"Lucy for the registry."
"Adrian, no," Mara whispered.
He looked at her.
Trust me.
He didn't say it.
He didn't need to.
Vivienne released Lucy.
Mara ran forward.
Lucy reached her.
Adrian tossed the folder.
Vivienne caught it.
Opened it.
Empty pages.
Her face transformed.
"You—"
Police lights flooded the basement windows.
Vivienne raised the syringe.
Not toward Lucy.
Toward herself.
Adrian grabbed her wrist.
"You're going to live."
She struggled.
"You think prison matters?"
"No."
His voice was almost sad.
"But truth does."
Federal agents entered.
Vivienne was arrested.
Mara held Lucy.
It should have been over.
Then Evelyn opened an old cabinet.
Inside was the real registry.
She read the first page.
Her face went white.
"Mara."
"What?"
Evelyn looked at Lucy.
Then at Celeste.
"This says neither of you was Subject M17."
Mara frowned.
"Then who was?"
Evelyn turned the page.
A photograph was clipped beneath the designation.
Mara recognized the child.
Not herself.
Not Celeste.
A boy.
Dark hair.
Dark eyes.
And beneath his photograph was a name.
ADRIAN VALE.
Adrian stared at the page.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"Vivienne wasn't studying my daughters."
She looked at Adrian.
May you like
"She was trying to save you."
Behind them, Vivienne began laughing...
