Chapter 6 - The Hospital's Perfect Lie

Mara slammed the elevator button.
Too late.
Adrian reached her.
"What did you see?"
"Your name."
His expression didn't change.
"In Daniel's ledger?"
"Yes."
"Anything else?"
"No."
He called Marcus.
Within minutes, every exit was covered.
Hale vanished anyway.
They found his physician's coat in the underground garage.
Nothing more.
Mara faced Adrian beside the empty parking space.
"Tell me what you're hiding."
"Several things."
She stared.
"At least you're honest."
"I didn't say they concern this."
"Your name was in that ledger."
"Adrian isn't uncommon."
"Among terrifying billionaires connected to secret medical trials?"
"Less common."
She wanted to be angry.
Instead she almost laughed.
That bothered her more.
Adrian stepped closer.
"I never financed experiments on children."
"Would you tell me if you had?"
"Yes."
"Why should I believe that?"
"Because lying now would be strategically stupid."
"That's your reassurance?"
"It's the best I have."
Mara looked away.
"Gabriel?"
Adrian's face tightened.
"Our family foundation invested in St. Arden twelve years ago. Gabriel managed medical philanthropy."
"So a Vale did finance it."
"Possibly without knowing what it became."
"Possibly?"
"Gabriel was better than I am."
There was no self-pity in the statement.
Just fact.
"He believed money could fix things."
"And you?"
"I believe people fix things. Money only reveals what they choose to fix."
Mara studied him.
"Why do they call you the Architect?"
Adrian looked toward the hospital.
"Because when someone hurts people under my protection, I don't attack them immediately."
"What do you do?"
"I learn what holds their world together."
"And then?"
"I remove the supports."
The answer should have frightened her.
It did.
But another part of her remembered him crouching to speak to Lucy.
"Was Gabriel under your protection?"
Adrian went still.
"Yes."
"So you blame yourself."
"Yes."
Mara understood then why Hale's accusation had struck so deeply.
Adrian didn't fear being blamed for Gabriel's death.
He already blamed himself.
Back inside St. Arden, Mara accessed archived employment records.
Elaine Porter had never resigned.
Her profile had been deleted.
Daniel's old visitor logs had also vanished.
Someone was rewriting history.
Then Mara found something they had missed.
Medication dispensing records.
Room 317.
One physician had authorized every experimental dose.
Dr. Warren Hale.
But another digital signature approved funding.
A. VALE.
Mara stared.
"Adrian."
He came behind her.
His expression changed.
"That's not my signature."
"Your name."
"My father."
Mara turned.
"You never mentioned your father."
"Augustus Vale."
"Alive?"
"No."
"When did he die?"
"Four years ago."
"Before Gabriel?"
"Yes."
Mara opened the attached authorization.
Augustus Vale had funded PROJECT LANTERN.
The Mercer Foundation matched every payment.
Vale money.
Mercer money.
St. Arden children.
And Mara's biological family.
"This started before Lucy was born."
"Long before."
Mara found an attachment.
SUBJECT M17.
Her childhood medical records.
Blood samples collected during foster placements.
She felt sick.
"They've been studying me my whole life."
Adrian touched the desk, not her.
Giving her something solid without assuming she wanted contact.
"What were they looking for?"
She opened the genetic summary.
A rare mutation.
One associated with resistance to a respiratory disorder.
Mara read twice.
Then understood.
"They weren't studying sick children to cure them."
"No."
"They were looking for children whose genetics could produce a treatment."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"And you were one of the source lines."
"Lucy inherited it."
That was why her daughter's asthma mattered.
Not because she was weak.
Because her immune response was unusual.
Mara's phone rang.
Rosa.
She answered instantly.
"Lucy?"
"She's fine," Rosa said. "But someone sent a package."
Mara's pulse accelerated.
"What package?"
"For you."
"Don't open it."
"I didn't."
They returned to Adrian's house.
The package contained an old cassette recorder.
One tape.
MARA — AGE 3.
Adrian found a player.
A woman's voice emerged.
"If you're hearing this, my name is Evelyn Mercer. I'm your mother."
Mara sat down.
"I gave you away because my father believed you belonged to his research."
Her eyes burned.
"I tried to destroy Lantern. I failed."
The recording crackled.
"Warren Hale helped me hide you. Augustus Vale helped finance the escape."
Adrian stared.
His father had not merely funded Lantern.
He had apparently tried to end it.
Then Evelyn said:
"Augustus discovered who took control of the project."
A pause.
"He gave the evidence to his eldest son."
Adrian whispered, "Gabriel."
"But Gabriel never delivered it."
The tape clicked.
A second voice appeared.
Daniel.
"Mara, if you've reached this recording, find Gabriel's compass."
Adrian looked down at his cuff.
Silver compass.
The same symbol.
Mara stared.
"Your cuff link."
Adrian removed it.
He pressed the tiny letter V.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a micro-SD card.
Adrian looked genuinely stunned.
"I've worn these for seven years."
"Gabriel gave them to you?"
"The night before he died."
They inserted the card into a laptop.
One encrypted folder appeared.
LANTERN_MASTER.
Adrian entered Gabriel's birthday.
Wrong.
His mother's birthday.
Wrong.
Then Mara noticed the password hint.
THE PERSON HE TRUSTED WITH HIS LIFE.
Adrian typed ADRIAN.
The folder opened.
Hundreds of documents appeared.
At the top was a video.
Gabriel Vale sat before the camera.
"If Adrian is watching this, I'm dead."
Adrian's face emptied.
Gabriel continued.
"Don't trust Warren Hale."
Mara stiffened.
"Hale isn't protecting the children. He's protecting Lantern."
Then Gabriel leaned toward the camera.
"And Mara Ellis isn't Evelyn Mercer's only child."
Mara stopped breathing.
A document opened automatically beneath the video.
Two birth certificates appeared.
Twin girls.
One was Mara.
The other had no first name.
But beside STATUS was a single word.
ALIVE.
Before Mara could speak, every security light outside Adrian's house went red.
Marcus's voice exploded through the intercom.
"Perimeter breach!"
Then Lucy screamed upstairs.
Mara ran.
She reached her daughter's bedroom.
The window was open.
May you like
The bed was empty.
And on Lucy's pillow sat Adrian's second silver compass cuff link...
