Chapter 8 - The Driver Who Was Never Found

The basement door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
But it wasn't a stranger.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I had seen many times after Richard died.
Someone who had stood beside me at the funeral.
Someone who had told me he was sorry for my loss.
My hands went cold.
"Frank?"
The man froze.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Frank Miller had been Richard's closest business partner.
He was the person who helped organize everything after my husband's death.
The person who told me the accident had been unavoidable.
The person who held my shoulder and said:
"Richard was a good man."
Now he was standing in my basement.
Listening.
Watching.
Like he had been there longer than anyone realized.
Tyler immediately stepped in front of me.
"Why are you here?"
Frank looked at my son.
Then at Daniel.
Then at the documents scattered across the table.
His expression changed.
He knew.
He knew everything.
"I was hoping you would never open that box."
My heart sank.
"How long have you known about it?"
Frank didn't answer.
I stepped forward.
"How long?"
His eyes moved toward me.
"Since the day Richard died."
The words hit harder than I expected.
Not because they surprised me.
Because they confirmed my worst fear.
Everyone had known.
Everyone except me.
"Get out."
My voice was quiet.
Frank looked surprised.
"Evelyn..."
"Get out of my house."
Tyler looked at me.
I could feel his surprise.
Maybe he expected me to cry.
Maybe he expected me to break.
But I was tired of breaking.
I had spent seven years grieving someone while the people around me carried the truth.
Frank didn't move.
"Before you judge me, you need to understand what happened."
I laughed softly.
"That's what everyone says."
Daniel looked at me.
"Evelyn..."
"No."
I looked around the room.
"Everyone keeps telling me I don't understand."
I pointed toward the papers.
"The truth is sitting right here."
My eyes moved to Frank.
"So explain it."
Frank took a slow breath.
Then he walked downstairs.
Nobody stopped him.
That scared me more.
Because it meant everyone knew this moment was coming.
"I was the one who found Richard's car."
My heart tightened.
"Found it?"
Frank nodded.
"The night he died."
Tyler looked at him.
"You never told me that."
Frank looked at my son.
"I told you what your father wanted me to tell you."
Tyler's face changed.
"What does that mean?"
Frank looked away.
And suddenly, I understood something.
Tyler wasn't the only person who had been controlled.
Everyone had been following Richard's final instructions.
Everyone except me.
"What happened that night?" I asked.
Frank looked at the floor.
"Richard called me around nine."
"Why?"
"He told me he discovered something."
"The company?"
Frank nodded.
"He said Daniel wasn't working alone."
The basement became silent.
I looked at Daniel.
He didn't look surprised.
That meant he already knew.
"Who was with him?" I asked.
Frank hesitated.
Then said:
"Someone inside the company."
My stomach tightened.
"Who?"
Frank didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Tyler.
"I think you already know."
Tyler's face went pale.
"No."
Frank continued.
"Your father trusted very few people."
I stared at him.
"Who was driving Richard's car?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Frank looked at Daniel.
And Daniel looked back.
The silence was enough.
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
"No."
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"That's not what happened."
Frank turned toward him.
"You were the last person seen with Richard."
Daniel's voice became sharper.
"Careful, Frank."
Frank laughed bitterly.
"Still threatening people after all these years?"
Tyler stepped between them.
"Stop."
Everyone looked at him.
My son looked terrified.
But this time, I didn't think it was because he was hiding something.
I thought he was remembering.
"I need to know."
He looked at Frank.
"What happened after Dad called me?"
Frank's expression softened slightly.
"You were supposed to meet him."
Tyler nodded.
"I went there."
"Did you see him?"
Tyler closed his eyes.
"Yes."
My breath stopped.
"You saw your father alive."
He nodded.
"What was he doing?"
Tyler swallowed.
"He was arguing with someone."
"Who?"
Tyler didn't answer.
But he didn't need to.
I already knew.
"Daniel."
Tyler looked down.
"Yes."
Daniel immediately spoke.
"I was trying to help him."
Tyler looked at him.
"You were angry."
"Because he was making a mistake."
"No."
Tyler's voice became stronger.
"You were angry because Dad found out."
Daniel's face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
The smallest reaction.
The reaction of someone who had been caught.
I looked at Daniel.
"What did my husband find?"
Daniel remained silent.
Then Laura spoke.
"The original documents."
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
"Richard discovered that the company was never losing money."
I frowned.
"What?"
Laura nodded.
"The losses were fake."
My head spun.
"Then where was the money going?"
Nobody answered.
Frank looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
And that was when I knew.
The truth was bigger than money.
Much bigger.
"Daniel."
He finally looked at me.
"What did you do?"
His face hardened.
"I didn't kill Richard."
Again.
That sentence.
Not an answer.
A defense.
I stepped closer.
"I didn't ask if you killed him."
Silence.
"I asked what you did."
For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.
Then Tyler's phone vibrated.
Everyone froze.
Another message.
Another unknown number.
Tyler looked at it.
Then slowly handed it to me.
I read the message.
My hands began shaking.
Because it wasn't a warning.
It was a photograph.
A photograph taken the night Richard died.
My husband standing beside a car.
And next to him...
Was me.
But I wasn't there.
I had never seen that picture before.
Underneath it were four words:
"Ask your son why."
I looked at Tyler.
May you like
He stepped backward.
And then the basement lights turned off again...
