Chapter 11 - The Truth Tyler Carried

The basement door slammed shut.
Everyone jumped.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The second recording was still paused.
Richard's voice was frozen in the air.
"Do not trust Tyler."
Those words stayed between us.
Heavy.
Painful.
Impossible.
I looked at my son.
Tyler looked like someone had just taken away the last thing he was holding onto.
His mother.
His family.
His excuse.
"Mom..."
I raised my hand.
Not because I didn't want to hear him.
Because I needed a second.
I needed to understand how the little boy I raised could be the person my husband warned me about.
Tyler looked down.
"I can explain."
Those words.
Again.
Everyone always had an explanation.
But nobody had ever given me the truth first.
I looked at the recording device.
"Play it."
Tyler froze.
"Mom."
"Play it."
Nobody argued.
Laura reached toward the device.
Her hand was shaking.
She pressed the button.
The speaker crackled.
Richard's voice returned.
"Evelyn..."
A pause.
"If you are hearing this, then you know about the files."
I closed my eyes.
"I need you to understand something."
The recording continued.
"Tyler was involved."
My heart sank.
Tyler looked away.
"But not in the way you think."
I opened my eyes.
Everyone listened.
"My son made a mistake."
Tyler's face changed.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
"He trusted someone he shouldn't have trusted."
The room became silent.
Richard continued.
"Tyler believed he was helping me."
I looked at my son.
He was crying now.
Quietly.
The way children cry when they know they disappointed someone they love.
"But he gave access to information that put our family in danger."
I felt confused.
"Access?"
Daniel looked down.
The recording continued.
"Tyler did not steal from me."
A pause.
"He did not betray me."
My breathing slowed.
"But he opened a door."
Richard's voice became more serious.
"A door that allowed the wrong person inside."
The recording stopped.
Everyone stared at the device.
That was it.
Not the whole truth.
Just enough to create another question.
I looked at Tyler.
"What door?"
He didn't answer.
I waited.
Finally, he sat down.
"I was twenty-one."
His voice was quiet.
"I thought I knew everything."
I stayed silent.
"Dad trusted me. He showed me some of the documents. He told me he needed someone young enough to move quickly."
Tyler wiped his face.
"I wanted to prove I could help him."
"And?"
He looked at the floor.
"Daniel came to me."
Everyone looked at Daniel.
"He told me Dad was making dangerous choices."
Daniel immediately spoke.
"I was trying to warn him."
Tyler shook his head.
"No."
His voice became stronger.
"You told me Dad was paranoid."
Daniel said nothing.
"You told me the company would collapse if Dad kept digging."
Tyler looked at me.
"And you know what I did?"
I didn't answer.
"I believed him."
The words hurt.
Not because Tyler made a mistake.
Because he carried it alone.
"I signed the documents."
I looked at him.
"The transfer."
He nodded.
"I thought I was protecting Dad's company."
His voice broke.
"I thought I was saving everything."
I looked at the papers.
"And instead?"
Tyler swallowed.
"Instead, I gave Daniel control."
Daniel stepped forward.
"That is not what happened."
Tyler turned toward him.
"Then tell her."
Silence.
"Tell her why the company ended up under your name."
Daniel didn't answer.
And that was the answer.
I looked at Daniel.
"You used my son."
His expression changed.
"I guided him."
"No."
My voice became cold.
"You used him."
Daniel looked away.
For the first time, he looked guilty.
I turned back to Tyler.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His eyes filled again.
"Because Dad told me not to."
I frowned.
"What?"
"He told me if anything happened to him, I had to keep you safe."
"By lying to me?"
Tyler shook his head.
"No."
He looked at the recording device.
"At first, I thought I was protecting you."
A pause.
"Then I became afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
He looked at me.
"That you would hate me."
Those words hurt more than I expected.
Because they sounded like my son.
Not the man who gave me a lease.
The boy who used to hide behind me when he was scared.
"I was your mother."
"I know."
"Why didn't you trust me?"
Tyler looked down.
"Because Dad was right about one thing."
"What?"
He took a breath.
"You would have gone after the truth."
I almost smiled.
Because he was right.
I would have.
"Yes."
Tyler nodded.
"And that's why I was scared."
The basement became quiet.
Then Frank suddenly spoke.
"There is something else."
Everyone turned.
I looked at him.
"What?"
Frank looked uncomfortable.
"Richard didn't just leave instructions."
"What else?"
"He left a backup plan."
Daniel's face changed.
"What?"
Frank looked at him.
"You didn't know?"
Daniel stepped forward.
"Where is it?"
Frank shook his head.
"That's the problem."
My heart tightened.
"What problem?"
Frank looked at me.
"Richard only left one person the location."
I already knew.
But I asked anyway.
"Who?"
Frank's eyes moved toward Tyler.
My son's face went pale.
"No."
Frank nodded.
"Yes."
Tyler stepped back.
"He told me."
Everyone froze.
"When?"
Tyler looked terrified.
"The night before he died."
My heart stopped.
"The night before?"
He nodded.
"Dad gave me a message."
"What message?"
Tyler looked at me.
"He told me if anything happened to him, I had to take you somewhere."
"Where?"
Tyler's lips parted.
But before he could answer...
The basement window shattered.
Everyone jumped.
A small object fell onto the floor.
A phone.
An old phone.
Tyler stared at it.
Because he recognized it immediately.
"I thought this was gone."
I looked at him.
"What is it?"
He slowly picked it up.
His hands were shaking.
Then the screen turned on.
One unread message.
One name appeared as the sender.
May you like
A name that made Tyler drop the phone.
Richard Carter.
