Chapter 5 - The Phone Call From The Dead

Daniel stared at the phone screen.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody even breathed.
I watched his face change as if he had just seen a ghost standing in front of him.
"Who is it?" Laura asked.
Daniel didn't answer.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
Tyler took a step closer.
"Daniel."
The older man looked up.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"That number..."
He stopped.
I felt my heartbeat getting faster.
"What number?"
Daniel slowly turned the phone around.
The screen was visible.
A name appeared.
Richard Carter.
My husband's name.
My dead husband's name.
For a moment, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.
Then I laughed.
A small, confused laugh.
Because there was no other reaction.
"That's impossible."
Nobody disagreed.
And that scared me more.
My husband had been dead for seven years.
I had watched the doctors lower their eyes before they told me there was nothing more they could do.
I had held his hand when he took his last breath.
I had chosen his funeral flowers.
I had signed his death certificate.
Richard Carter was gone.
But his name was calling Daniel's phone.
"Answer it," I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
"No."
"Why?"
His eyes moved toward Tyler.
"Because if that is really him..."
He didn't finish.
But everyone understood.
Daniel was afraid.
Not of the phone call.
Of what it meant.
Tyler reached for the phone.
Daniel pulled it away.
"Don't."
"You came here for the truth," Tyler said. "Now it's calling you."
The phone continued ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then it stopped.
The kitchen became silent again.
But this silence felt different.
Heavy.
Like something had entered the room even though nobody had walked through the door.
Daniel slowly placed the phone on the counter.
"I thought that number was gone."
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel rubbed his face.
"Richard created a system."
"A system?"
"A way to send information if something happened to him."
I stared.
"You mean he planned this?"
Daniel nodded.
"Your husband knew someone might try to take everything from you."
My chest tightened.
"Someone?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at Tyler.
My son looked away.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because I finally understood.
This wasn't one secret.
It was a lifetime of secrets.
"You knew my husband was afraid."
Tyler didn't deny it.
"Yes."
"You knew he was protecting me."
"Yes."
"You knew there was money."
"Yes."
Each answer felt like another door closing.
"And you still asked me to pay rent."
Tyler's face changed.
"Mom..."
"No."
My voice stayed calm.
That was the strangest part.
I wasn't screaming.
I wasn't crying.
I was just tired.
"I want to understand something."
Tyler looked at me.
"Did you invite me here because you wanted me close?"
His silence answered before he did.
"I did want you close."
"But?"
He swallowed.
"But Dad left instructions."
The room froze.
"Instructions?"
Tyler nodded slowly.
"After he died, I found a letter."
My hands went cold.
"A letter from your father?"
"Yes."
"About me?"
"About protecting you."
I looked at the folder.
The photograph.
The lease.
Everything suddenly connected.
"What did the letter say?"
Tyler looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
The letter involved all of them.
Tyler finally spoke.
"Dad told me there would be people looking for the money."
"What people?"
"I don't know."
"Don't lie to me."
His eyes filled with guilt.
"I know one person."
He looked toward Daniel.
My stomach dropped.
"Daniel?"
Tyler nodded.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
"That's not true."
Tyler looked at him.
"You came here because you thought you could find the files."
"I came here because I wanted to protect Evelyn."
"Like you protected my father?"
The room went completely quiet.
I looked at Daniel.
"What happened to my husband?"
Daniel didn't answer.
I took one step toward him.
"What happened to Richard?"
His expression changed.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just tired.
"I didn't kill your husband."
The words shocked me.
Because I hadn't asked that.
Not directly.
But apparently, it was the question everyone had been avoiding.
Laura closed her eyes.
Tyler looked down.
And I realized something terrible.
Everyone in this room had considered that possibility.
Except me.
"Why would you even say that?" I whispered.
Daniel didn't respond.
Instead, he opened his briefcase.
Inside was another folder.
Thicker.
Older.
He pulled out a document.
"I came here because Richard sent me this."
I stared.
"Richard sent you something?"
Daniel nodded.
"Two weeks before he died."
I looked at the paper.
"What was it?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then handed it to me.
I took it.
The handwriting was familiar.
My husband's.
The first line made my fingers shake.
"Daniel, if you are reading this, I know Evelyn has finally discovered the truth."
I looked up.
"Why did he write my name?"
Daniel didn't answer.
I kept reading.
"Do not give my wife the documents until Tyler understands why I left them with him."
I stopped.
My eyes moved back to Tyler.
"Why you?"
Tyler looked away.
"Because Dad trusted me."
"Then why didn't you trust me?"
He had no answer.
I continued reading.
The next sentence was shorter.
But it changed everything.
"The money was never the thing I wanted to protect."
I frowned.
Then read the next line.
"The person I wanted to protect was the one who would be blamed when the truth came out."
I felt a chill.
"Blamed for what?"
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Laura.
Then Tyler.
"Who was supposed to take the blame?"
Tyler's phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone turned.
He looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
"What is it?" I asked.
He didn't answer.
He slowly turned the phone toward us.
There was a message.
One sentence.
From an unknown number.
"Stop searching for your father's files, or your mother will learn what you did."
Tyler dropped the phone onto the table.

And before anyone could move...
The basement door behind me slowly opened by itself...
