Chapter 2 - The Envelope Hidden Behind The Lease

I pulled the envelope from underneath the lease agreement and froze when I saw the name written across the front.

My own.

Evelyn Carter.

But I had never seen that envelope before.

I held it carefully, almost afraid that touching it would make something disappear.

The paper was old.

Not damaged.

Not forgotten.

Hidden.

Someone had placed it beneath Tyler's rental agreement intentionally.

I looked toward the hallway where my son had disappeared.

For a moment, I wondered if he knew.

Had Tyler hidden this?

Or had someone else?

My fingers moved slowly across the sealed edge.

I should have opened it immediately.

But something stopped me.

A feeling.

The same feeling I had when I found my husband's old letters years after his death.

The feeling that whatever was inside could change the way I remembered everything.

I carried the envelope downstairs to my room.

My basement room.

The room Tyler called "a comfortable space."

The room that had one small window near the ceiling.

The room where I had placed my six boxes.

My entire life reduced to cardboard.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the envelope for almost ten minutes.

Then I opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

And a photograph.

My breath stopped.

The photograph was of Tyler.

But he was much younger.

Maybe twenty years old.

He was standing beside my husband, Richard.

Both of them were smiling.

I remembered that day.

Or at least I thought I did.

It was the summer before Tyler left for college.

Richard had taken him fishing.

Tyler came home excited, talking for hours about how his father had taught him something important.

I had always believed it was just a father-son trip.

But on the back of the photograph were words written in my husband's handwriting.

My hands began shaking.

"Tyler knows the truth. One day he will need this."

I stared at the sentence.

The truth?

What truth?

I turned the paper over.

There was another note.

This one was shorter.

"Evelyn, if you are reading this, something happened that I feared."

I stopped breathing for a second.

My husband's name was at the bottom.

Richard.

My husband had written this before he died.

But why?

Why would he hide something from me?

Why would he leave a message that I would only find years later?

I continued reading.

"I wanted to tell you myself, but I promised Tyler I wouldn't until he was ready."

My heart sank.

Tyler.

My son knew something.

Something I didn't.

I put the letter down.

Suddenly, the lease agreement felt different.

It was no longer just about money.

It was about something deeper.

Something that had been hidden inside my family for years.

I walked upstairs.

Tyler was standing in the kitchen, drinking coffee.

He looked surprised when he saw my face.

"Mom?"

I placed the photograph on the counter.

His expression changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

He knew.

"Where did you get that?" he asked.

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

I watched him carefully.

"You know this picture?"

Tyler didn't answer.

He picked it up slowly.

His fingers tightened around the edges.

"Mom, you shouldn't have found this."

Those words hurt more than I expected.

Not because of the secret.

Because he said them like I was the person who had done something wrong.

"You knew about this?"

Tyler looked away.

"There's a lot you don't understand."

I almost laughed.

A painful laugh.

Because for thirty-five years, I had been the person who understood everything.

I understood when he was hungry.

I understood when he was scared.

I understood when he needed help.

But now my own son was standing in front of me telling me I didn't understand.

"What is this about, Tyler?"

He remained silent.

I stepped closer.

"Your father wrote this."

His eyes moved back to mine.

That was enough of an answer.

"You knew."

Tyler swallowed.

"Not everything."

"But something."

He looked down.

"Yes."

The kitchen became quiet.

I could hear the refrigerator humming.

The clock on the wall ticking.

Normal sounds.

A normal morning.

Except my son was standing three feet away from me, holding a secret my dead husband left behind.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Tyler rubbed his forehead.

"I thought I was protecting you."

"Protecting me?"

I looked at the lease agreement still sitting on the table.

"By making me pay rent?"

His face changed.

A small flash of guilt appeared.

Then disappeared.

"I didn't mean for it to feel like that."

"But it did."

Tyler looked away.

For the first time since he placed the contract in front of me, he looked uncomfortable.

Not because he regretted hurting me.

Because he was afraid I was getting close to something.

"Mom, please."

The way he said it made me stop.

"Please what?"

"Don't open things that were meant to stay closed."

I stared at him.

A chill moved through me.

Because Tyler wasn't asking me to stop.

He was warning me.

I picked up the photograph.

"What did your father hide from me?"

Tyler didn't answer.

"Tyler."

Still nothing.

Then he walked to a kitchen drawer.

For a second, I thought he was going to give me the truth.

Instead, he pulled out another envelope.

My name was written on it too.

But this one looked newer.

Only a few years old.

"I was supposed to give this to you after Dad died."

I looked at the envelope.

"Why didn't you?"

Tyler's eyes filled with something I couldn't understand.

Regret.

Fear.

Maybe shame.

"Because after I read it, I didn't know if I could."

My heart started beating faster.

"What does it say?"

Tyler held the envelope tightly.

"I don't know if you want to know."

I looked at my son.

The boy I raised.

The man standing before me.

The person who had turned my home into a rental agreement.

"I spent my whole life taking care of everyone else," I said quietly. "I think I deserve the truth."

Tyler closed his eyes.

Then he placed the envelope on the table.

My hand reached for it.

But before my fingers touched the paper, a sound came from behind us.

The front door opened.

Someone walked inside.

Tyler immediately stepped back.

His face turned pale.

I looked toward the hallway.

A woman stood there holding a small bag.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected to see again.

May you like

Because she was holding the same photograph in her hand.

And she whispered my husband's name...
