Chapter 9 - The Night Clara Disappeared

Clara read Elena's message twice.
Adrian read it once.
Then he said, "We're going."
"No."
Everyone looked at Clara.
She enlarged the photograph.
"Look at the window."
Adrian leaned closer.
Reflected in the glass was a clock.
9:14.
She checked the current time.
9:41.
"The photo is twenty-seven minutes old."
"So?"
"So they want us chasing the car."
Adrian understood.
"They're somewhere else."
"Exactly."
Clara examined the image.
Vivienne's dress.
Carlo's jacket.
Elena's position.
Then she noticed something beneath Vivienne's shoe.
White powder.
Not dust.
Plaster.
"Construction site."
Adrian called security.
"Bellandi projects within thirty miles."
Clara shook her head.
"Too obvious."
She looked at Howard.
"What buildings are being renovated by shell companies connected to Orpheus?"
He thought.
"One."
"Where?"
"Midtown."
An unfinished luxury tower.
Moretti-Bellandi joint development.
Of course.
They reached it after ten.
The lobby was empty.
Elevators disabled.
Clara looked up forty-two floors.
"You have got to be kidding me."
Adrian glanced at her heels.
"You can stay."
She removed them.
"Try saying that again."
They climbed.
At floor thirty-eight, they found Vivienne's red scarf.
At forty-one, blood.
At forty-two, an open door.
Inside sat Vivienne.
Alone.
Adrian rushed forward.
Clara stopped him.
"Wait."
Vivienne lifted her head.
"He's gone."
"Carlo?"
"Elena."
"Where?"
Vivienne looked at Clara.
"Looking for you."
Clara froze.
"Me?"
"She doesn't need Adrian anymore."
Adrian cut Vivienne's restraints.
"What does she need Clara for?"
Vivienne rubbed her wrists.
"To authenticate the takeover."
Clara stared.
"I'm not an officer."
"No."
Vivienne looked at her.
"But you're the independent analyst of record."
The trap became clear.
For the hidden trust to withstand legal challenge, an independent financial reviewer had to certify the transaction.
Clara.
Her review wasn't incidental.
It was the final professional seal.
"That's why they brought me in."
Vivienne nodded.
"Elena selected you months ago."
Clara felt violated in a way she hadn't expected.
Her career.
Her reputation.
Her expertise.
All weaponized.
"Why me?"
"Because you don't miss things."
"That seems counterproductive."
"They needed someone credible enough to validate the final structure after the hidden pieces were removed."
Adrian looked at her.
"But you found them."
"Because Elena wanted me to."
Vivienne nodded.
"Until she got Samuel's key."
Clara understood.
Now Elena could control Orpheus directly.
She no longer needed Gabriel.
Carlo.
Dominic.
Maybe even Adrian.
"Where's your father?"
Vivienne's expression went strange.
"I don't know."
"You were with him."
"He and Elena started arguing."
"About what?"
"Gabriel."
Adrian stepped closer.
"What about him?"
"My father said Elena had changed the plan."
Clara's pulse quickened.
"Changed it how?"
Vivienne swallowed.
"She isn't giving Gabriel control."
A sound came behind them.
Clara turned.
Too late.
Something struck her neck.
A sharp sting.
Her knees weakened.
Adrian caught her.
"Clara!"
The room tilted.
She saw a woman standing in the doorway.
Elena.
A syringe in her hand.
Adrian moved toward her.
Then two men appeared behind him.
Clara tried to speak.
Nothing worked.
The last thing she saw was Adrian fighting toward her.
Then darkness.
When Clara woke, she was sitting in a chair.
Not tied.
That frightened her more.
Elena sat across from her.
"You could've asked me to come."
"You would've said no."
"Correct."
Elena poured water.
Clara didn't touch it.
"Where am I?"
"Safe."
"People who kidnap analysts really overuse that word."
Elena smiled.
"I like you."
"That's unfortunate."
"You remind me of myself."
"I sincerely hope not."
Elena's smile faded.
She placed a laptop between them.
"Authenticate the review."
"No."
"Look first."
Clara did.
The takeover structure had changed.
Bellandi removed.
Gabriel removed.
Orpheus would acquire fifty-one percent.
Beneficial controller—
Elena Rossi.
"You want the empire."
"I want control."
"Same sentence with better public relations."
Elena leaned forward.
"Do you know what men like Carlo and Gabriel do with power?"
"Apparently kidnap accountants."
"They destroy everything around them."
"And your solution is to become them?"
"My solution is to take away their weapons."
"By stealing a company."
"By controlling it."
Clara pushed the laptop away.
"No."
Elena's face hardened.
"Your signature makes the structure legal."
"Then you'll remain disappointed."
Elena stood.
"Adrian will die if you don't."
Clara looked at her.
There it was.
The real Elena.
Not analyst.
Not victim.
Someone who had spent too long near monsters and learned their language.
"You won't kill him."
"You sound confident."
"You need a Moretti heir."
"Not anymore."
Elena placed Samuel's physical key on the table.
"I have both authorizations."
Clara looked at it.
Both?
Elena had one.
Who gave her the other?
Then Clara understood.
"Gabriel."
Elena smiled.
"He trusted me."
"Past tense."
"He made the mistake everyone makes."
"Which is?"
"Thinking love creates loyalty."
Clara stared.
"You and Gabriel."
"For six years."
That explained everything.
Elena's false identity.
Her access.
Gabriel's trust.
The plan.
She hadn't infiltrated Moretti Holdings for Carlo.
She had infiltrated it for Gabriel.
Then decided to take the prize herself.
"Where is he?"
Elena's smile vanished.
"Unavailable."
"Dead?"
"No."
That meant imprisoned.
Clara looked at the laptop again.
She needed time.
"Let me verify the structure."
Elena sat.
Clara began reading.
Slowly.
Very slowly.
Hidden among the corporate documents, she opened the system settings.
Network connection.
Active.
She typed numbers into a search field.
Not random.
Adrian's phone number encoded as a financial query.
Then a message.
TRACE SESSION.
She hit enter.
Elena noticed.
"What did you do?"
Clara looked up.
"Checked the math."
Elena grabbed the laptop.
Too late.
An alarm sounded outside.
Elena's face changed.
"How?"
Clara smiled.
"Analysts don't just find traps."
Footsteps thundered in the corridor.
Elena pulled a gun.
The door burst open.
Adrian stood there.
For one second, relief crossed his face.
Then Elena pressed the gun against Clara's temple.
"One more step."
Adrian stopped.
Clara's heart pounded.
Elena smiled.
"You came for the wrong woman again."
Adrian's eyes never left Clara.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"This time I know exactly who I came for."
Then another gun clicked behind Adrian.
May you like
Gabriel's voice filled the doorway.
"So do I."
