Chapter 13 - Clara's Final Calculation

Clara ran toward the car.
Adrian caught her.
"Wait."
"My mother is in there."
"I know."
"Let go."
The car didn't move.
Thomas Vale opened the door.
Clara's mother stepped out.
Alive.
Unharmed.
And furious.
"Clara Bennett!"
Clara stopped.
Her mother marched toward her.
"What kind of people are you working with?"
Clara almost collapsed with relief.
"Mom."
She hugged her.
Her mother hugged back hard.
Then slapped Clara's shoulder.
"You haven't answered my calls."
"I've been slightly occupied."
Thomas Vale emerged from the car.
Adrian stared at him.
"Why use her phone?"
"Because you wouldn't answer mine."
"You threatened Clara."
"No. I said her mother was safe."
Clara's eyes narrowed.
"You deliberately made it sound like a threat."
Vale smiled.
"And you immediately told Adrian. Useful."
Clara disliked him instantly.
"Useful for what?"
"To see whether he would protect you."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Enough games."
Vale looked at him almost sadly.
"Your father said the same thing."
Silence.
"You knew Samuel."
"I was his attorney."
Adrian stared.
"My mother told me you met after he died."
"Your mother told you many things to keep you alive."
Clara looked between them.
Another layer.
Another secret.
She was tired of secrets.
"Board meeting," she said. "Why?"
Vale looked at her.
"Because Adrian cannot save Moretti Holdings while owning it."
Clara frowned.
"Explain."
"The company is poisoned by thirty years of shell entities, hidden trusts, and liabilities created by Samuel, Dominic, Gabriel, Carlo, and others."
Adrian stepped closer.
"So you remove me."
"I separate you from the liability."
Clara understood.
"A restructuring."
Vale smiled.
"Exactly."
"You make the old company absorb the historical liabilities."
"And move legitimate assets into a clean entity."
Adrian looked furious.
"Without telling me."
"You would've refused."
"Correct."
Vale shrugged.
"Which is why boards exist."
Clara examined the proposal.
It was ruthless.
But legal.
Moretti Holdings would surrender control.
Historical entities would face investigation.
Legitimate businesses would survive.
Employees would keep jobs.
Adrian would lose his empire.
But not his future.
"Who controls the new company?" Clara asked.
Vale handed her a document.
She read.
No Moretti majority.
No Bellandi majority.
Employee trust: twenty percent.
Independent investors.
Public offering planned.
Adrian would retain eighteen percent.
Gabriel twelve.
Clara looked at Vale.
"You dismantled the dynasty."
"I gave them the opportunity to stop inheriting each other's sins."
Adrian stared at the city.
Clara knew what this cost him.
Moretti Holdings wasn't just wealth.
It was his father.
His childhood.
His identity.
His burden.
"Do I have a choice?" he asked.
Vale answered:
"Yes."
Everyone looked at him.
"You control enough proxies to block removal if Gabriel supports you."
Adrian looked toward Clara.
She understood what he was asking without words.
Not What should I do?
What does it cost?
She answered that question.
"If you block the restructuring, you may preserve control. But every hidden liability stays attached to the company. Investigations could freeze assets for years."
"And if I accept?"
"You lose control."
"Everything?"
"No."
Clara looked at him.
"You lose the empire."
She paused.
"Not everything."
Their eyes held.
At noon, Adrian entered the boardroom.
Gabriel sat opposite him.
Dominic attended remotely.
Thomas Vale presented the restructuring.
Clara sat as independent analyst.
The vote began.
Adrian had one final opportunity to block it.
He looked at Gabriel.
His brother slowly nodded.
For once, no scheme.
No secret.
Adrian voted yes.
The Moretti empire ended at 12:43 p.m.
No explosion.
No gunfire.
Just a raised hand.
Clara watched something leave Adrian's face.
Not pride.
Weight.
Afterward, reporters gathered outside.
Federal investigations into Bellandi entities were announced.
Carlo remained in custody.
Elena agreed to cooperate.
Vivienne's brother was located alive.
Dominic turned over records.
Gabriel surrendered his convertible notes in exchange for equity in the clean company.
For the first time, the machinery of secrecy began moving toward daylight.
Clara found Adrian alone in the empty boardroom.
"How does it feel?"
"Like someone removed a building from my shoulders."
"That sounds healthy."
He looked at her.
"Dinner."
She laughed.
"You're persistent."
"I've had a difficult week."
"So have I."
"Tomorrow. Seven."
Clara pretended to consider.
"One condition."
"Anything."
"No marriage contracts."
He smiled.
"Agreed."
Her phone buzzed.
She looked down.
Howard.
URGENT.
Clara sighed.
"What now?"
She opened the attachment.
A final audit discrepancy.
The new company had received every legitimate Moretti asset.
Except one.
A property transferred ten minutes before the board vote.
St. Catherine's Chapel.
Owner:
Vivienne Bellandi.
Clara frowned.
Then another file arrived.
A marriage license.
Filed that morning.
Not Adrian and Vivienne.
Gabriel Moretti.
Vivienne Bellandi.
Clara stared.
Adrian read over her shoulder.
Neither spoke.
Then the boardroom door opened.
Gabriel stood there.
May you like
Vivienne beside him.
And she was wearing a wedding ring.
