Chapter 6 - The Woman They Tried to Silence

"Give me the tablet."

Adrian reached for it.

Clara pulled it away.

"No."

"Clara."

"If it's connected to the system, touching the wrong thing could trigger whatever this is."

The countdown reached twenty-three.

Elena struck the glass and pointed upward.

Clara followed her finger.

Sprinkler system.

No.

Ventilation.

A green light flashed beside one duct.

"Gas."

Adrian's guards spread out.

"Find the control."

Twenty seconds.

Clara looked at the tablet.

Two buttons appeared.

ADRIAN.

GABRIEL.

"This is theater," she said.

"What?"

"Gabriel doesn't need me to choose which brother lives."

Fifteen.

"Then what does he want?"

"To see whether I'll follow instructions."

Ten.

Clara shut her eyes.

Think.

A takeover based on signatures.

Contracts.

Consent.

Everything in Gabriel's plan depended on someone voluntarily activating something.

Maybe this did too.

Five.

Adrian grabbed her hand.

"Clara."

She did nothing.

Three.

Two.

One.

The screen went black.

Nothing happened.

Then the ventilation fans stopped.

Clara exhaled.

"Good."

Adrian stared at her.

"You gambled our lives."

"No. I refused to play."

A metallic click sounded.

The glass partition unlocked.

Elena collapsed forward.

Adrian caught her.

She was thinner than her photographs.

Exhausted.

But alive.

"Gabriel," she whispered.

"Where?"

"Gone."

Clara knelt beside her.

"Who sent me the hidden schedule?"

Elena looked directly at her.

"I did."

Clara froze.

"You?"

"I've been getting access to his network whenever they moved me."

"You wanted me at the dinner."

"Yes."

"The red dress?"

Elena almost smiled.

"I needed Adrian to mistake you for Vivienne."

Adrian stared.

"Why?"

"Because he wouldn't have shown an outside analyst the marriage documents voluntarily."

Clara sat back.

The entire absurd misunderstanding had been engineered.

"You used me."

"I'm sorry."

"Later."

Clara helped her sit.

"Tell us everything."

Elena looked toward Adrian.

"Your brother isn't trying to steal your empire."

"I know."

"He's trying to destroy Carlo Bellandi."

"Using my empire."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Elena's eyes closed.

"Because Bellandi killed your father."

Adrian went still.

"And Gabriel saw it happen."

The warehouse seemed to disappear around them.

Elena continued.

"Samuel discovered Carlo had been laundering money through Moretti shipping companies. He created Orpheus with Dominic as a defensive mechanism."

"Then why was Gabriel involved?"

"Samuel gave Gabriel the second authorization key."

Adrian's voice cracked.

"He was seventeen."

"Because Samuel trusted him."

Elena looked at Clara.

"The night Samuel died, Gabriel was in the car."

Adrian stared.

"He survived."

"Yes."

"And disappeared."

"Because Carlo told him Adrian and his mother would die if he returned."

Clara understood the cruelty.

Gabriel hadn't abandoned his family.

He had been exiled through fear.

"Twenty years," Adrian whispered.

Elena nodded.

"He spent twenty years building evidence against Bellandi."

"Why not come to me?"

"Because he doesn't trust Dominic."

Dominic.

Clara remembered his reaction.

His surprise seemed genuine.

But genuine surprise didn't equal innocence.

"Should he?" she asked.

Elena looked at her.

"No."

Adrian's head snapped toward her.

"Why?"

Elena reached beneath her sleeve.

A tiny memory card dropped into her palm.

"Because Dominic didn't kill Samuel."

She looked at Adrian.

"But he helped Carlo cover it up."

The words hit like a gunshot.

Adrian stepped back.

Elena continued.

"Dominic believed Carlo would kill you too. He falsified records. Buried evidence. Signed the death certificates."

Adrian's face became unreadable.

Clara understood something about powerful families.

Their greatest secrets weren't always created by hatred.

Sometimes they were created by cowardice disguised as protection.

Elena handed Clara the memory card.

"Everything is there."

"What everything?"

"Samuel's original records. Gabriel's evidence. Bellandi payments. Dominic's cover-up."

Clara closed her fingers around it.

"And the marriage?"

"The final trap."

Adrian looked at her.

"Explain."

"Gabriel needs Carlo to activate the takeover."

"Why?"

"Because the moment Carlo exercises control through the hidden trust, he legally identifies himself as the beneficial controller of every shell company connected to it."

Clara understood.

"It exposes him."

Elena nodded.

"Twenty years of hidden assets become attributable to Bellandi in one transaction."

Adrian stared.

"So Gabriel wants me to sign."

"Yes."

"And lose my company."

"Temporarily."

"That's a significant detail."

Elena looked at Clara.

"The three percent is the poison pill."

Clara remembered Dominic's claim.

"He was telling the truth."

"About that."

"What happens?"

"When Bellandi combines the forty-eight percent with Orpheus's three percent, Samuel's original provision activates."

"Which does what?"

Elena smiled weakly.

"It transfers Orpheus's three percent plus voting proxies from several dormant family trusts."

"How much?"

"Four percent."

Adrian calculated.

"Bellandi gets forty-eight."

"You get fifty-two."

Clara finally saw it.

Bellandi would believe he controlled fifty-one.

But at the moment he asserted control, Samuel's poison pill would give Adrian fifty-two.

The takeover would fail.

And expose Bellandi.

Elegant.

Dangerous.

Brilliant.

"Then why all the threats?" Clara asked.

Elena's expression darkened.

"Because Gabriel changed."

Adrian said nothing.

"He spent twenty years preparing revenge. At some point, exposing Bellandi stopped being enough."

"What does he want?"

"Everything."

A sound came from outside.

Engines.

Many.

Adrian's security chief looked toward the door.

"We have company."

Clara helped Elena stand.

"Bellandi?"

Elena shook her head.

"Worse."

The warehouse doors exploded inward.

Men entered.

Adrian pulled Clara behind a concrete pillar as his guards moved.

The next seconds were noise and movement.

Clara covered her ears.

Adrian stayed between her and the gunfire.

Then silence.

A voice came through a loudspeaker.

"Adrian!"

Dominic.

Adrian looked toward the entrance.

Dominic walked inside with six armed men.

He saw Elena.

His face collapsed.

"You're alive."

Elena stared at him.

"You knew."

Dominic stopped.

"I tried to protect them."

"You protected yourself."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Is it true?"

Dominic looked at his nephew.

Then lowered his weapon.

"Yes."

Adrian's face hardened.

"You buried my father twice."

Dominic closed his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Before Adrian could answer, Clara's tablet vibrated.

She looked down.

A new live feed opened.

Carlo Bellandi sat behind a desk.

Beside him was Vivienne.

Her hands were tied.

Carlo smiled into the camera.

"Enough family reunions."

Adrian went still.

Carlo lifted a gun and pressed it against his daughter's head.

"Tomorrow's wedding will proceed."

Vivienne stared into the camera.

Then she whispered four words.

Clara barely heard them.

"Don't sign the certificate."

May you like

Carlo smiled.

And pulled back the hammer.
