Chapter 11 - The Man Behind the Marriage

The chapel filled with federal agents.

Adrian didn't move.

Neither did Clara.

Carlo walked forward with the confidence of a man who believed he'd finally reached the final square of a game.

"Adrian Moretti," one agent said, "step away from the table."

Clara looked at the document.

Confession?

No.

Marriage documents couldn't become criminal confessions simply because Carlo called them that.

Unless the page Adrian had signed wasn't what Clara thought it was.

She grabbed it.

At the bottom was a digital certification string.

Wrong.

She knew the correct hash.

This wasn't her document.

"Adrian."

He looked at her.

"The contract was switched."

Carlo smiled.

"Finally."

Clara turned toward the officiant.

He was already moving toward the side door.

Security stopped him.

Carlo shrugged.

"People are remarkably affordable."

The lead federal agent approached.

"Mr. Moretti, we have warrants related to money laundering, racketeering, and conspiracy."

Carlo looked delighted.

Clara looked at Howard's remote screen.

"Howard."

"I'm checking."

"Fast."

Adrian remained calm.

"What exactly did I sign?"

Carlo answered.

"An acknowledgment of beneficial ownership over twelve shell companies your father used for illegal transactions."

Adrian stared.

"Those were your companies."

"Prove it."

Clara almost smiled.

That was exactly what Samuel's ledger did.

She looked toward Dominic.

He understood.

The ledger was hidden beneath the chapel table in a document case.

Dominic reached for it.

A gunshot cracked.

The case flew from his hand.

Everyone turned.

Elena stood in the choir loft.

Somehow free.

Again.

Gabriel appeared behind her.

"Elena!"

She grabbed the case.

Carlo's face changed.

For the first time, panic.

"Stop her!"

Agents moved.

Elena ran.

Gabriel followed.

Clara looked at Adrian.

"Go."

He hesitated.

"Clara—"

"Go!"

Adrian ran after them.

Clara turned to the federal agent.

"You've been manipulated."

He looked unimpressed.

"I hear that frequently."

"Carlo Bellandi is the beneficial owner of the entities you're attributing to Adrian."

Carlo laughed.

"She's his employee."

"No," Clara said.

"I'm the independent analyst you hired to validate the merger."

That stopped him.

Clara pulled up the archived files.

"And I have the transaction history."

Howard's voice came through the laptop.

"Clara."

"What?"

"I found the switch."

"When?"

"Nine minutes before the ceremony."

"Who accessed the file?"

Silence.

"Howard."

"Vivienne."

Everyone turned.

Vivienne stood beside the altar.

Her face went pale.

Carlo smiled.

Clara felt sick.

"Vivienne?"

She shook her head.

"I had to."

Carlo's smile widened.

"He has my brother."

Of course.

Carlo had always kept leverage.

Vivienne began crying.

"I'm sorry."

Clara looked at her.

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

Carlo shrugged.

"Family requires sacrifice."

Vivienne turned toward him.

Something changed in her face.

Years of fear condensed into one decision.

She walked toward Clara.

Then handed her phone to the federal agent.

"My father has been threatening me for eleven years."

Carlo's smile vanished.

Vivienne continued.

"I recorded everything."

The agent took the phone.

Carlo stepped forward.

"You stupid girl."

Vivienne flinched.

But didn't retreat.

"You taught me fear was loyalty."

Her voice shook.

"It isn't."

Carlo lunged.

Agents restrained him.

Clara looked toward the stairwell.

Adrian.

Gabriel.

Elena.

The ledger.

She ran.

Upstairs, she heard shouting.

Then found Gabriel on the floor.

Blood on his shoulder.

"Where's Adrian?"

"Roof."

Clara ran.

The roof door opened.

Wind struck her face.

Elena stood near the edge holding the ledger.

Adrian faced her.

"Give it to me."

"No."

"Elena."

"You don't deserve it."

"Maybe not."

She stared.

That answer surprised her.

Adrian continued.

"My father didn't build this so I could rule people."

Clara stopped behind them.

"He built it so Carlo couldn't."

Elena looked at Clara.

"You."

"Me."

"You ruined everything."

Clara shook her head.

"No. You ruined it when justice stopped being enough."

Elena looked down at the ledger.

Sirens echoed below.

She could surrender.

Run.

Destroy it.

Then she did something none of them expected.

She tore out several pages.

Adrian moved.

Elena stepped onto the ledge.

"Stop."

She smiled sadly.

"Tell Gabriel I'm sorry."

Then she dropped the ledger.

Not herself.

The book fell over the edge.

Clara ran forward.

Too late.

It disappeared forty stories below.

Elena raised her hands.

"I surrender."

Adrian stared over the ledge.

The original evidence was gone.

Clara's heart sank.

Then her tablet chimed.

She looked down.

A file upload had completed.

SAMUEL_LEDGER_COMPLETE.PDF.

She stared at Elena.

Elena smiled faintly.

"I scanned it before I stole it."

Adrian looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because despite everything..."

Her eyes filled.

"...I wanted Carlo to lose."

Federal agents emerged onto the roof.

They took Elena into custody.

Adrian came to Clara.

"It's over."

She wanted to believe him.

Then her tablet vibrated again.

Howard.

One message.

NO. IT ISN'T.

Another file appeared.

Clara opened it.

A corporate ownership chart.

At the top was Moretti Holdings.

Below it, an entity she had never seen.

Its owner controlled fifty-three percent through convertible debt.

Clara's mouth went dry.

Adrian saw her face.

"What?"

She turned the screen.

"Someone already owns your company."

May you like

The owner name loaded.

Gabriel Moretti.
