Chapter 9 - The Gun That Changed Everything

The voice came from the darkness.
"Little Nat."
My entire body froze.
Not because of the nickname.
Because I remembered.
Not everything.
Just a piece.
A tiny, painful piece.
A man’s hand.
A loud sound.
My mother crying.
And someone saying:
"Don’t look, Natalie."
I grabbed my head.
The underground garage disappeared for a moment.
I wasn't standing beside Adrian anymore.
I was eight years old again.
A child hiding behind a door.
A child listening to adults whisper about things she was never supposed to understand.
Then the memory vanished.
I opened my eyes.
Adrian was holding my shoulders.
"Natalie."
I pushed him away.
"Don't."
His expression hurt.
But I didn't care.
Not now.
Not after twenty years of missing pieces.
The older man stepped out of the darkness.
Daniel Cross.
The man who claimed to know my father.
The man who somehow knew my childhood nickname.
The man everyone feared.
He looked at me with sadness.
"You remembered something."
I stared at him.
"How do you know?"
"Because your mother told me you would."
My breathing became uneven.
"You knew this would happen?"
"Not exactly."
He looked at Adrian.
"But I knew the truth would eventually come back."
Adrian stepped forward.
"You shouldn't have contacted her."
Daniel looked at him.
"You should have told her."
"You don't understand."
"No."
Daniel's voice became sharper.
"I understand perfectly."
The two men stared at each other.
And suddenly I realized something.
They weren't enemies.
They were two people who had been carrying the same secret from opposite sides.
"What happened that night?"
Neither answered.
I looked at both of them.
"Enough."
My voice echoed through the garage.
"I am done watching everyone protect me from my own life."
Nobody spoke.
I pointed at Adrian.
"You had the key."
Then at Daniel.
"You had the answers."
Then at the woman.
"You knew my mother."
I looked around.
"And somehow I am still the last person to know what happened to my own family."
The silence that followed was different.
Not uncomfortable.
Guilty.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"You're right."
That surprised me.
He didn't argue.
Didn't defend himself.
He simply accepted it.
"Your father didn't disappear because he was weak."
I waited.
"He disappeared because he found something."
"The file?"
Daniel nodded.
"The same file everyone has been trying to find for twenty years."
"And what's inside?"
Daniel looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
"The truth about the night your father died."
I froze.
"But you said he disappeared."
Daniel looked away.
"Because that is what everyone needed to believe."
My heart sank.
"Is he dead?"
Nobody answered immediately.
That was the answer.
My eyes burned.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
"No, you don't get to do that."
I looked at Daniel.
"You don't get to stand there and tell me my whole life is a lie and then refuse to answer."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Your father is not the only person who disappeared that night."
"What does that mean?"
"It means your mother erased more than your memories."
I stared at him.
"What else?"
"She erased everyone's connection to you."
I didn't understand.
"Why?"
"Because someone was looking for a child who knew too much."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"I was a child."
"Yes."
Daniel's voice softened.
"That's why they underestimated you."
I looked at Adrian.
"And the gun?"
The question hung between us.
Adrian went completely still.
Daniel noticed.
"You never told her."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I was trying to protect her."
Daniel laughed quietly.
"That excuse has destroyed more lives than the truth ever did."
I looked at Adrian.
"What gun?"
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Adrian."
His eyes met mine.
The pain there was real.
And somehow that made it worse.
"Your father gave me a gun."
My stomach dropped.
"Why?"
"Because someone was coming for him."
"Who?"
He looked away.
"I don't know."
I couldn't believe him.
"You don't know?"
"I knew who wanted him gone."
"Then who?"
Adrian was silent.
Daniel answered.
"The people who hired me."
The garage went quiet.
I turned toward him.
"You?"
Daniel nodded.
"I was hired to protect your father."
"By who?"
He looked at me.
"Your mother."
I froze.
"What?"
"Your mother knew something was going to happen. She knew your father was close to exposing people who couldn't be exposed."
Daniel looked down.
"She hired me to keep him alive."
"Then why did he disappear?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Adrian did.
"Because I failed."
I looked at him.
"What happened?"
Adrian took a breath.
"The night your father disappeared, he called me."
The garage became silent.
"He told me to take the gun and leave."
"Why?"
"Because he knew someone was coming."
"Who?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Someone he trusted."
That sentence made my blood run cold.
"Who?"
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
"I never saw his face."
I frowned.
"What?"
"He wore a mask."
"Then how do you know it was someone he trusted?"
Adrian looked at the ground.
"Because your father opened the door for him."
Nobody spoke.
I tried to imagine it.
My father.
A person he trusted.
A door opening.
Then everything falling apart.
"What happened after?"
Adrian's voice became quiet.
"I heard a gunshot."
I stopped breathing.
"And then?"
"I ran inside."
He swallowed.
"Your father was gone."
My hands shook.
"And the gun?"
Adrian looked at me.
"I had it."
The answer felt heavier than I expected.
"You had the gun when you found him?"
"No."
"Then where did it come from?"
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Daniel reached into his coat.
Slowly.
Everyone reacted.
But he ignored them.
He pulled out a small evidence bag.
Inside was an old gun.
My heart stopped.
"This is the gun."
Nobody moved.
I stared.
"Why do you have it?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Because your father left it for you."
My eyes widened.
"What?"
He turned the bag over.
There was something engraved on the handle.
A name.
My name.
Natalie.
I couldn't speak.
Then my phone vibrated.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A picture appeared.
A security camera image.
It showed my childhood home.
The house where my mother and I lived.
The house that burned down years ago.
But the picture wasn't old.
It was recent.
Taken tonight.
Below it was a message.
"Your father's secret was never hidden in the past."
I stared.
A second message appeared.
"The person who burned your house is standing beside you."
My blood went cold.
Slowly...
I looked around the garage.
At Adrian.
At Daniel.
At the woman.
At the security team.
Someone among us.
Someone who had been helping me.
Someone who knew everything.
Then the garage lights flickered.
And a voice came from behind me.
"Natalie..."
I turned.
Because I knew that voice.
It was the voice from my missing memory.
May you like
The voice from the night my father disappeared.
And the person standing there was holding the same gun.
