Chapter 8 - My Husband’s Thirty-Million-Dollar Lie

Richard didn’t deny it.

He sat opposite me and told me the part he had hidden.

Karin wasn’t his biological daughter.

He had put his name on her birth certificate to protect Evelyn Vale.

Her real father was Daniel.

Karin was Daniel Vance’s daughter.

That meant Daniel had manipulated his own child into helping steal my inheritance.

Karin listened in stunned silence.

“Did my mother know?”

“Yes,” Richard said.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“She was afraid.”

Karin stood and walked out.

I followed.

She stopped in the hallway.

“I spent my whole life thinking nobody wanted me.”

I didn’t know what to say.

“So when Tyler told me I belonged to something, I believed him.”

“I understand.”

“No, you shouldn’t.”

“I didn’t say I forgive everything.”

She nodded.

Fair.

The original trust was found inside Daniel’s private bank vault.

It confirmed my controlling interest.

Karin inherited a smaller branch through Daniel.

For the first time, neither of us needed Tyler to define what belonged to us.

The federal case expanded.

Tyler agreed to cooperate.

His testimony exposed Daniel’s network and recovered most of the stolen money.

He would still face prison.

Consequences mattered.

One evening, he asked to see me again.

“I never married you for the shares,” he said.

“But you stayed for them.”

His silence answered.

“I did love you.”

“I know.”

Again, that surprised him.

Love was not the question anymore.

Character was.

“I hope someday you become the man you kept telling me you were.”

“Would that change anything?”

“No.”

He cried.

I didn’t.

When I left the detention center, Adrian was waiting.

“Everything finished?”

“With Tyler? Yes.”

But Vance Holdings remained.

The board offered me the chairmanship.

I refused initially.

Then I toured one of our factories.

A woman named Rosa stopped me.

“My husband and I both work here,” she said. “Please don’t sell.”

Three thousand jobs.

Families.

Mortgages.

College funds.

This company was more than the Vance family’s crimes.

I accepted.

My first decision was to commission an independent audit.

My second was to create employee representation on the board.

My third was to remove the Vance name from the executive floor.

Three weeks later, auditors found one final discrepancy.

Thirty million dollars had returned.

Anonymous transfer.

The same amount Tyler had stolen.

But Tyler hadn’t returned it.

Neither had Daniel.

The transfer originated in Switzerland.

Account holder:

THOMAS VANCE.

My biological father had supposedly died fourteen years ago.

Adrian stared at the record.

Then his phone rang.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“The cemetery.”

“What about it?”

“They opened Thomas Vance’s grave.”

My skin prickled.

May you like

Adrian lowered the phone.

“The coffin was empty.”
