Chapter 13 - The Last Vance Secret

Daniel wanted the original trust.

He still believed destroying it could restore his claim.

He was wrong.

Digital copies existed in six locations.

Federal courts had authenticated them.

But desperate men rarely care whether their plans still make sense.

They care about control.

I called the agents.

I did not go alone.

We traced the message to the abandoned Vance estate in Connecticut.

The house where Tyler grew up.

Daniel had taken Richard there.

Adrian came with federal tactical officers.

Karin insisted on coming as far as the perimeter.

“He’s my father.”

“He used you.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I need to see him become smaller than the monster in my head.”

I understood.

Daniel stood in the old ballroom with Richard tied to a chair.

He held a gun.

I entered wearing a wire.

“You came.”

“Let him go.”

“Bring me the trust.”

“It won’t help you.”

His face twisted.

“You stole my family.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You destroyed yours.”

He aimed at me.

“You aren’t even a Vance.”

“And somehow that makes this funnier.”

Richard almost smiled despite the blood on his lip.

Daniel’s hand shook.

For decades, everyone feared him.

Now I saw what remained beneath the money and intimidation.

A frightened old man who had confused possession with worth.

Karin entered unexpectedly.

“Dad.”

Daniel froze.

His gun lowered slightly.

“Karin?”

She looked at him.

“You knew I was your daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And you used me anyway.”

“I was building something for you.”

“No. You were building something for yourself.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

That distraction was enough.

Richard kicked the chair sideways.

I moved.

Adrian entered.

Agents followed.

Daniel was arrested without another shot.

Outside, Karin cried.

I held her.

Not because the past was erased.

Because it wasn’t.

Richard survived with minor injuries.

Daniel returned to custody under maximum security.

This time there would be no medical transfer.

The final trial began two months later.

Tyler testified against his uncle.

Karin testified against her father.

Richard testified about the attack.

I testified about the forged documents and financial conspiracy.

Daniel was convicted.

Decades in prison.

Marcus received a reduced sentence for cooperation.

Cole received twelve years.

Tyler’s sentence remained seven.

The legal story ended.

But one question remained.

Who sent me the first photograph of Richard alive?

Adrian claimed it wasn’t him.

Richard didn’t know.

Federal investigators traced the number.

It belonged to a prepaid phone purchased near Bellarosa.

Security footage showed the buyer.

A woman.

Ivory silk dress.

Blonde hair.

Karin.

I confronted her.

She nodded.

“I sent it.”

“Why?”

“Because before I walked into Bellarosa, I already knew Tyler was married.”

Everything inside me stopped.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then the surprise?”

“Real. But not about you.”

“What were you surprised by?”

She swallowed.

“I was surprised Adrian was there.”

“Why?”

“Because your father told me that if Adrian Moretti ever appeared at Bellarosa, it meant Daniel had discovered 514.”

I stared at her.

“You were working with my father.”

“For three weeks.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“He made me promise.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.”

Then Karin handed me her phone.

“There’s something else.”

A scheduled message had arrived from Richard the night before.

It contained a video.

Richard appeared on screen.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If Giana ever learns Karin knew before the anniversary, tell her the dinner itself was never an accident.”

My pulse quickened.

“The table was chosen because someone needed to see all of you together.”

The video ended.

I looked at Karin.

“Who?”

She pointed toward the old Bellarosa surveillance image.

Table Seventeen.

But not Adrian.

A woman was sitting behind him.

My mother.

Or someone who looked exactly like her.

May you like

Then Karin whispered:

“Giana, your mother had a twin.”
