Chapter 7 - The Secret Beneath Vance Tower

Daniel had made one mistake.
He thought we were alone.
Adrian’s security team surrounded him within seconds.
Daniel merely smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
“Then explain,” I said.
My biological father was not Richard Bellamy.
He was Thomas Vance.
Tyler’s father.
The room seemed to tilt.
“No.”
Daniel produced documents.
Thomas had an affair with my mother before he married Eleanor.
I was born first.
Under the original Vance family trust, the controlling shares passed to Thomas’s eldest biological child.
Me.
Richard adopted me and buried the truth to protect my mother.
Daniel discovered it years later.
That was why he needed my shares.
That was why Tyler had married me.
The thought struck harder than Karin.
“Did Tyler know?”
“Not when he married you.”
Daniel’s smile was cruel.
“He learned three years ago.”
Three years.
Every breakfast.
Every vacation.
Every kiss.
He knew.
My marriage had transformed into a financial strategy while I was still living inside it.
Daniel had encouraged Tyler to remain married until they could transfer my shares.
When I resisted changes to the trust, they began building the incapacity case.
Karin was supposed to provide testimony.
The affair was useful leverage.
My father discovered the plan.
Everything connected.
Daniel was arrested before sunrise.
But the story was no longer containable.
By noon, reporters surrounded Vance Tower.
By evening, my photograph was everywhere.
SECRET VANCE HEIR.
THE WIFE WHO OWNED HER HUSBAND’S EMPIRE.
I hated every headline.
I didn’t want an empire.
I wanted the life I had believed was real.
That night I sat alone in the empty boardroom.
Adrian entered quietly.
“You should sleep.”
“So should you.”
He placed coffee beside me.
I looked at him.
“Why did you help my father?”
“My sister loved him.”
“My mother.”
“Yes.”
“So you’re my uncle.”
He nodded.
That explained the strange protectiveness.
The silver wolf.
The connection.
For the first time, Adrian’s intimidating silence became something else.
Family.
Awkward.
Complicated.
Unexpected.
He handed me an envelope.
“Your mother left this with me.”
My hands trembled.
Inside was a letter.
She had written it before she died.
She told me Thomas Vance had wanted to acknowledge me.
Daniel prevented it.
Richard chose to raise me anyway.
“He became your father by choice,” she wrote. “Never let blood make that choice smaller.”
I cried then.
Not elegantly.
Not quietly.
Adrian sat beside me without speaking.
At midnight, my phone vibrated.
Tyler.
One message.
I KNOW WHERE DANIEL KEPT THE ORIGINAL TRUST.
Then another.
HE LIED ABOUT ONE THING.
A photograph arrived.
It showed the original trust document.
Beside my name was another.
Karina Evelyn Bellamy.
My sister had a claim too.
Then Tyler sent one final message.
DON’T TRUST RICHARD.
I looked toward the doorway.
May you like
My father was standing there.
And he had seen the message.
