Chapter 5 - The Wife Who Was Supposed to Disappear

Eleanor didn’t fire.

She surrendered the gun.

That frightened Adrian more.

“I came because Marcus has Tyler,” she said.

I stared at her.

“You’re supposed to be dead.”

“So was your father.”

Fair point.

Eleanor had spent seven years living abroad under another identity.

The money trail began with her, but not because she had stolen it.

She had created an off-books fund after discovering Marcus was laundering money through Vance subsidiaries.

She intended to expose him.

Instead, Marcus threatened Tyler.

So Eleanor disappeared.

“Tyler believed you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“And you let him?”

“I thought grief was safer than a coffin.”

I was becoming tired of parents who confused abandonment with protection.

“Where is Tyler?”

“Marcus took him from his apartment two hours ago.”

“Why?”

“Because Tyler has something Marcus needs.”

Adrian asked, “The master ledger?”

Eleanor nodded.

Tyler had stolen the ledger from my father.

He hadn’t understood what it contained until recently.

Then he began stealing smaller amounts, believing Marcus couldn’t expose him without exposing himself.

My husband hadn’t merely betrayed me.

He had tried to blackmail a criminal network.

I should have felt satisfaction.

Instead, I remembered him laughing in our kitchen five years earlier, flour on his cheek while attempting to make my birthday cake.

Love didn’t disappear simply because the person became undeserving of it.

It became grief.

My phone rang.

Tyler.

I answered.

Marcus spoke.

“Bring the silver card.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Where?”

Marcus gave an address.

An abandoned Vance warehouse.

“You have one hour.”

The call ended.

I looked at Adrian.

“No.”

“I didn’t ask.”

“You’re not going.”

“That card belonged to my father.”

“And Marcus wants it because?”

We examined it again.

Inside the metal edge was a micro-storage strip.

Encrypted.

My father entered the room slowly.

When he saw Eleanor, decades of history passed silently between them.

Then he saw the card.

“That opens the master archive.”

“Where?”

“Under Vance Tower.”

The archive contained records Marcus could never allow authorities to see.

Names.

Accounts.

Bribes.

Extortion.

Evidence.

Enough to destroy him.

We didn’t go to the warehouse alone.

Federal agents were already investigating the shell companies. Adrian’s attorneys arranged contact.

At 11:13 p.m., I entered the warehouse wearing a wire.

Tyler was tied to a chair.

Blood marked his collar.

Marcus stood behind him.

“Giana.”

Tyler looked at me.

“Don’t give it to him.”

Marcus struck him.

I didn’t flinch.

“Let him go.”

“The card.”

I held it up.

“You first.”

Marcus smiled.

“You’ve changed.”

“No. I stopped pretending.”

He pushed Tyler toward me.

I threw the card across the floor.

Marcus grabbed it.

Federal agents moved outside.

Then Tyler whispered, “Giana, run.”

Marcus looked at the card.

His smile vanished.

“This isn’t it.”

I had switched it.

He reached inside his jacket.

A gun appeared.

Adrian emerged from the shadows.

Marcus aimed at me.

A shot cracked.

Tyler threw himself sideways.

Marcus fell.

Not dead.

Wounded.

Agents flooded the warehouse.

I knelt beside Tyler.

He looked at me as though saving my life should erase everything else.

It didn’t.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“I know.”

“Can we fix this?”

“No.”

His face broke.

That was the moment our marriage truly ended.

Not at Bellarosa.

Not with Karin.

Here.

Because I finally understood that forgiveness and reconciliation were not the same thing.

Hours later, Marcus was in custody.

We believed the danger was over.

Then an agent approached me.

“We recovered Mr. Dane’s phone.”

He showed me a message sent fifteen minutes before the raid.

It contained my photograph.

Under it were four words.

IF MARCUS FAILS, TAKE HER.

The recipient’s number belonged to someone already inside Vance Tower.

Someone who had just used my security badge.

And the building cameras showed that person entering Room 514-B.
