Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew Everything

The office door opened.

I froze.

Victoria stepped in front of me.

Her hand reached for the folder containing every document that could destroy Ricardo.

The person standing outside was not Ricardo.

It was Dr. Samuel Ortega.

The same man I had just seen on the video.

The same man my mother-in-law trusted enough to hide the truth from everyone else.

He looked exhausted.

His eyes moved from Victoria to me.

Then he said the one sentence I never expected to hear.

“Mariana, your husband knows you found out.”

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“How?”

Dr. Ortega closed the door behind him.

“Because Ricardo has been watching everyone around him.”

Victoria frowned.

“Are you saying he knew about Elena’s plan?”

The doctor nodded.

“He suspected she was preparing something.”

My chest tightened.

“Then why didn’t he stop her?”

Dr. Ortega looked at the folder in my hands.

“Because he thought she was too weak to fight back.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Too weak.

That was what Ricardo believed.

That was what everyone who underestimated me believed.

For years, I had been the quiet one.

The patient one.

The woman who avoided conflict.

The woman who forgave too quickly.

Ricardo thought that meant I was powerless.

He was wrong.

“What happened to Elena?” I asked.

Dr. Ortega looked down.

“She woke up twenty minutes ago.”

I stood immediately.

“I need to see her.”

Victoria grabbed my arm.

“Mariana, we need to be careful.”

“I don’t care anymore.”

My voice surprised even me.

“I spent seventeen years protecting this family. I’m not leaving her alone now.”

Dr. Ortega looked at me differently.

Not with pity.

With respect.

“She knew you would say that.”

I stopped.

“What?”

He reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“Elena gave me this two days ago.”

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t you give it to me before?”

“Because she told me not to.”

My eyebrows tightened.

“She said you would only receive it after you saw the truth with your own eyes.”

My fingers touched the envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Mariana.

Nothing else.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was a small piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

“Do not let Ricardo make you believe you are the problem.”

I felt something break inside me.

Because those were the exact words I needed.

The exact words I had been waiting years to hear.

I remembered every argument.

Every time Ricardo made me apologize.

Every time he convinced me I was too emotional.

Too sensitive.

Too suspicious.

Maybe I was never the problem.

Maybe I was simply the only person who saw him clearly.

“We have to move,” Victoria said.

She looked toward the hallway.

“Now.”

We left the office through the back exit.

The entire time, I felt like someone was watching.

Like Ricardo’s shadow was following me.

When we arrived at the hospital, I expected chaos.

I expected security.

I expected Ricardo waiting.

But the hallway was strangely quiet.

Too quiet.

Dr. Ortega walked ahead.

Victoria stayed beside me.

We reached Elena’s room.

The door was closed.

I placed my hand on the handle.

Then I stopped.

For some reason, I was afraid.

Not because of what I would find inside.

Because I realized I might finally hear the truth.

I opened the door.

Elena was awake.

She looked older than she did yesterday.

More fragile.

But her eyes were sharp.

The moment she saw me, tears filled her eyes.

“Mariana.”

I walked toward her.

“Elena.”

She grabbed my hand.

Her grip was weak.

But desperate.

“He knows.”

I swallowed.

“I know.”

Her face changed.

“You saw her?”

I nodded.

“The woman.”

Elena closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked ashamed.

“I should have told you.”

I sat beside her.

“Why didn’t you?”

She looked toward the window.

“Because I thought I could fix my son.”

Her voice cracked.

“I thought if I found enough proof, if I confronted him, he would stop.”

She laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“I was wrong.”

I held her hand.

“What is his plan?”

Elena looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

“Ricardo doesn’t just want your money.”

I waited.

“He wants you to disappear.”

The words felt unreal.

“What?”

“He has been building a story.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of story?”

“A story where you are unstable.”

I felt cold.

“A story where you become the wife who couldn’t handle pressure.”

Elena continued.

“He planned to use your emotional reactions against you.”

I remembered every fight.

Every time he pushed me until I cried.

Every time he told me I was irrational.

“He wanted people to believe you were responsible for everything.”

I looked down.

The pieces connected.

The fake signatures.

The hidden transfers.

The woman.

The money.

It was all part of a plan.

“He wants a divorce.”

Elena shook her head.

“Worse.”

I looked at her.

“He wants control.”

The room became silent.

Then Elena reached under her pillow.

She pulled out a small key.

A simple metal key.

“What is that?”

“Something Ricardo doesn’t know about.”

She placed it in my hand.

“This opens a safe deposit box.”

I stared at it.

“What is inside?”

“The original documents.”

My heart raced.

“Original documents for what?”

Elena looked directly into my eyes.

“The proof that Ricardo never built his empire alone.”

I didn’t understand.

“He used my family’s money?”

“No.”

She paused.

“He used yours.”

I froze.

“What are you talking about?”

Elena took a deep breath.

“When you married Ricardo, you inherited your father’s investment account.”

I stared at her.

“My father died when I was young.”

“Yes.”

“And that money was gone.”

Elena looked away.

“That is what Ricardo wanted you to believe.”

My hands began shaking.

For years, I thought my father’s legacy had disappeared.

I thought there was nothing left.

But now Elena was telling me something impossible.

“Where is it?”

She looked toward the door.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

Her voice became quieter.

“Somewhere Ricardo can never reach.”

Before I could ask another question, the hospital lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the room went dark.

I stood up.

“What happened?”

Dr. Ortega opened the door.

The hallway outside was empty.

No nurses.

No security.

Nothing.

Victoria looked at her phone.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She turned the screen toward me.

A message had arrived.

From Ricardo.

My blood ran cold.

It said:

“I know where you are.”

Another message appeared.

“I know what Elena gave you.”

Then a final message.

“Ask her about the night your father died.”

I looked at Elena.

Her face had gone pale.

Because she knew something I didn’t.

And before anyone could speak, the hospital room door slowly opened from the outside.

May you like

A man’s voice whispered:

“Mother.”
