Chapter 2 - The File Hidden Beneath the Truth

The laptop screen went black.
I stared at the frozen image of Dr. Samuel Ortega, the doctor who had treated my mother-in-law for almost a year.
My lawyer, Victoria Hayes, sat across from me without saying a word.
She knew.
She knew something I didn’t.
“Why is he involved?” I asked.
My voice sounded calmer than I felt.
Victoria slowly closed the laptop.
“Mariana, before you watch anything else, you need to understand something.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She opened the folder Elena’s name was written on.
“Your mother-in-law came to me three months ago.”
My heart stopped.
“Elena hired you?”
Victoria nodded.
“She was afraid.”
I leaned back in my chair.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“My mother-in-law hired a lawyer behind Ricardo’s back?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victoria looked down at the documents.
“Because she believed her son was planning to destroy everything you built together.”
For seventeen years, I thought Elena saw me as an outsider.
A woman who took her son away.
A woman who was never enough.
But now I was sitting in a lawyer’s office hearing that the same woman had secretly tried to protect me.
I didn’t know what hurt more.
The betrayal from my husband.
Or realizing that someone I misunderstood had been trying to warn me.
“What did she know?” I asked.
Victoria opened another file.
Inside were printed emails.
Bank records.
Private messages.
She pushed them toward me.
“Ricardo has been moving company assets for almost a year.”
I looked at the pages.
The numbers were impossible to ignore.
Millions of dollars.
Transferred slowly.
Carefully.
Hidden behind fake business expenses.
“He was stealing from his own company?” I whispered.
Victoria shook her head.
“Not exactly.”
She pointed to one document.
“He was preparing to make it look like you were responsible.”
I looked closer.
My name was there.
On a document I had never signed.
A financial authorization form.
A transfer approval.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
Except it wasn’t mine.
Someone had copied it.
My hands became cold.
“He was going to blame me?”
Victoria nodded.
“That was the plan.”
I couldn’t breathe for a moment.
All those years.
All those sacrifices.
The late nights.
The hospital visits.
The years I spent defending him when people questioned his choices.
And while I was protecting his family, he was preparing to destroy mine.
“Why would he do this?” I asked.
Victoria was silent.
Then she said:
“Because Ricardo believes he is smarter than everyone around him.”
That sounded exactly like him.
Ricardo always had a way of making people feel lucky to be near him.
He knew how to smile.
He knew how to speak.
He knew how to make promises.
But I was beginning to realize something.
He was also very good at hiding.
“Who is the woman?” I asked.
Victoria didn’t answer immediately.
She looked uncomfortable.
“That is the part Elena wanted you to see yourself.”
She opened the laptop again.
This time, she played the video.
The screen showed a hotel conference room.
Ricardo was sitting at a table.
The pregnant woman was across from him.
I recognized her immediately.
The woman from the hospital.
But this video was older.
Much older.
The date appeared in the corner.
Eight months earlier.
My stomach tightened.
Eight months.
That meant before I started taking care of Elena full-time.
Before I thought my marriage was still safe.
Ricardo looked at the woman and said:
“Once my mother changes the ownership documents, everything will be easier.”
The woman smiled.
“What about Mariana?”
Ricardo laughed.
Not nervously.
Not uncertainly.
He laughed like my name meant nothing.
“She won’t understand what happened until it’s already finished.”
I covered my mouth.
Victoria paused the video.
“Mariana…”
“No.”
I raised my hand.
I needed to hear it.
I needed to know exactly how far he had gone.
She continued.
The woman touched her stomach.
“And the baby?”
Ricardo leaned forward.
“The baby will have everything.”
The screen froze.
I stared at his face.
The face I kissed every morning.
The face I trusted.
The face I defended.
Suddenly, it felt like I had been married to a stranger.
“What did Elena know?” I asked.
Victoria took a deep breath.
“She discovered the relationship.”
“When?”
I closed my eyes.
A year.
For a year, Ricardo had been living two lives.
And I had been standing beside him, believing I was his only one.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
Victoria looked at me carefully.
“Because she was afraid you would leave before she could protect you.”
I looked at the documents again.
“Protect me?”
“Yes.”
Victoria opened another envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was shaky.
Old.
But I knew it immediately.
Elena.
My fingers trembled as I unfolded it.
Mariana,
I know I have not always treated you the way you deserved. I spent years judging you because I believed nobody would ever be good enough for my son. I was wrong.
You were the only person who stayed when things became difficult.
You cared for me when I was sick.
You loved my son when he had nothing.
But Ricardo changed.
I saw it before anyone else.
He started believing people existed only to serve him.
I tried to stop him.
I failed.
If you are reading this, then he has probably already made his move.
Please do not trust apologies.
Do not trust promises.
Trust the documents.
Protect yourself.
I lowered the letter.
My eyes burned.
For years, I wanted Elena’s approval.
And when she finally gave it to me, it was because she knew she might not have much time left.
“Is she going to be okay?” I asked.
Victoria hesitated.
That hesitation frightened me.
“What?”
“She asked Dr. Ortega to keep her condition private.”
“What condition?”
Victoria looked away.
“She knew her health was worse than Ricardo told you.”
I stood up immediately.
“What are you saying?”
“Mariana, your mother-in-law wasn’t only fighting her illness.”
I stared at her.
“She was fighting her son.”
The room went silent.
I grabbed my phone.
I needed to see Elena.
I needed answers.
But before I could call, my phone vibrated.
One message.
From Ricardo.
My heart stopped.
I opened it.
“Where are you?”
Another message arrived.
“I know you met with someone.”
Then another.
“Mariana, we need to talk.”
I looked at Victoria.
“How does he know?”
Victoria’s expression changed.
She immediately closed the files.
“Because someone told him.”
“Who?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked toward the office window.
The blinds were slightly open.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
My blood ran cold.
“Victoria…”
She stood slowly.
“Don’t move.”
The phone vibrated again.
This time, it wasn’t Ricardo.
It was a message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
Only five words appeared.
“Your mother-in-law woke up.”
Then another message appeared.
“She wants to see you before he arrives.”
Victoria grabbed the documents.
“Mariana, we have to leave now.”
I looked at the door.
Then I heard footsteps outside.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming closer.
Victoria whispered:
“He found us.”
The office door handle moved.
Once.
May you like
Twice.
Then the lock clicked open from the outside.
