Chapter 1 - The Secret I Found Beside a Hospital Bed

A woman in a hospital gown grabbed my hand and whispered:

“Please don’t let my son destroy you.”

When I entered the VIP hospital room, I found my husband’s missing business file hidden beneath my mother-in-law’s blanket.

Inside was a single document with my name written across it.

The truth I had spent seventeen years believing was suddenly falling apart.

I was never supposed to find it.

My name is Mariana Salgado, and for seventeen years, I believed I had built a life with the man I loved.

I met Ricardo Mendoza when I was twenty-four years old.

Back then, he was ambitious, charming, and determined to prove himself. He told me he came from nothing. He told me that one day, he would build a company, buy us a beautiful home, and give me a life where I would never have to worry about anything.

I believed every word.

I was the woman standing beside him when nobody else believed in him.

I helped him prepare presentations late at night.

I cooked dinner while he worked.

I supported him when his first business failed.

When he finally succeeded, everyone called him a genius.

But I knew the truth.

Behind every successful moment was a woman who had sacrificed quietly.

Me.

For years, I never complained.

When Ricardo’s mother, Elena, became sick, I was the first person who stepped forward.

She had always been difficult with me.

At the beginning of my marriage, she never thought I was good enough for her son.

She criticized my cooking.

She questioned my decisions.

She reminded me constantly that Ricardo was destined for something bigger.

But when she became weak and needed help, I forgot every painful thing she had said.

Because that was who I was.

I cared.

I stayed.

I believed family meant something.

For six months, I drove her to appointments.

I prepared her meals.

I sat beside her hospital bed.

Ricardo always thanked me.

At least, I thought he did.

“Mariana, I don’t know what I would do without you,” he told me one night.

I smiled.

I believed him.

That was the last time I remember feeling completely safe.

The day everything changed started like any other hospital visit.

I arrived at the private hospital around 3:00 p.m.

Elena was sleeping.

I adjusted her blanket and checked her medication.

Then I noticed something strange.

Her room door was slightly open.

That was unusual because the VIP floor was always carefully controlled.

I walked toward the hallway.

That was when I saw him.

Ricardo.

My husband.

The man who told me he had a business meeting downtown.

He was standing outside the VIP lounge.

But he was not alone.

A young woman stood beside him.

She was beautiful.

Elegant.

And visibly pregnant.

My first thought was that there had to be an explanation.

There had to be.

Then she reached for his hand.

And my entire world stopped.

“You’re sure she doesn’t know?” she whispered.

Ricardo looked around nervously.

Then she smiled.

“What if your wife finds out?”

I felt my fingers become cold.

My heart was beating so loudly that I thought they could hear it.

I waited for Ricardo to deny it.

I waited for him to step away.

I waited for him to say something that would save the life I thought I had.

But he didn’t.

Instead, he looked at her stomach.

And smiled.

That smile destroyed seventeen years of memories.

I walked away.

I did not scream.

I did not cry.

I did not confront them.

Because suddenly, I understood something.

Ricardo was not afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing what I gave him.

I returned to Elena’s room and sat beside her bed.

My hands were shaking.

But my mind was clear.

For the first time in seventeen years, I stopped thinking like a wife.

I started thinking like someone who needed to survive.

That night, after Elena fell asleep, I searched through the documents I had access to.

Ricardo had always trusted me with paperwork because he never believed I would question him.

That was his mistake.

I found bank statements.

Property records.

Investment files.

And something else.

Something hidden.

A folder with Elena’s name.

Inside was a document that made my stomach turn.

It was a transfer agreement.

A large amount of money had been moved.

Seven million dollars.

And the person receiving it was not Ricardo.

It was someone else.

Someone whose name I recognized.

The pregnant woman.

My hands trembled as I read the final page.

There was a signature.

And underneath it was a note written by Elena herself.

"Mariana deserves to know the truth."

I looked toward the hospital bed.

My mother-in-law was still sleeping.

But suddenly, I wondered.

How long had she known?

The next morning, I made one phone call.

A lawyer answered.

“Mrs. Salgado, how can I help you?”

I looked at the hospital documents in front of me.

Then I said:

“I need everything protected before my husband realizes I know.”

The lawyer was silent for a moment.

Then she asked:

“What happened?”

I looked at my wedding ring.

The ring I had worn for seventeen years.

And I finally said:

“My husband made a mistake.”

Three hours later, I sat across from the lawyer.

She placed a folder on the table.

Inside were copies of my family’s property documents.

Then she looked at me seriously.

“Mariana, before we continue, there is something you need to see.”

She opened her laptop.

A video appeared on the screen.

It showed Ricardo.

And the woman from the hospital.

But then another person entered the room.

Someone I never expected to see.

Someone who knew everything.

The screen froze on a face I recognized.

My mother-in-law’s doctor.

May you like

And the next message appeared on the screen:

“Mariana, you need to see what Ricardo did before it is too late…”
