Chapter 5 - The Mother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Adrian did not speak for almost a minute.

Claire watched him stare at the photograph of Elizabeth Bennett.

He had been six years old when his mother disappeared from his life.

A child when Charles told him she died.

A man when he discovered she had survived.

Now the woman he had mourned for nearly three decades appeared connected to the loss of Claire's pregnancy.

"No," Adrian whispered.

Claire understood the denial.

She no longer trusted it.

Cole called again fifteen minutes later.

Melissa was safe.

Elizabeth had fled through the back of the property before officers arrived.

But Melissa finally agreed to cooperate.

Her statement transformed the case.

She had worked for Elizabeth secretly for eleven years.

Elizabeth contacted her after escaping the private facility where Charles had kept her.

At first, Melissa believed she was helping a traumatized woman expose her abusive husband.

Then Elizabeth's obsession shifted toward Adrian.

She followed his relationships.

Investigated his friends.

Interfered with business decisions.

When Adrian married Claire, Elizabeth became convinced Claire had been chosen by Charles to produce a child he could control.

"She thought I worked for Charles?" Claire asked.

Cole nodded.

"Apparently."

"So she poisoned me?"

"Melissa says Elizabeth ordered her to substitute one of your supplements."

Adrian's voice became hard.

"Why would Melissa agree?"

"She claims Elizabeth told her the pills were harmless and intended to make Claire temporarily infertile."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"That's supposed to help?"

"No."

Cole continued.

"Melissa says she didn't know you were already pregnant."

Claire stared at the ultrasound.

Everyone had explanations.

Nobody had innocence.

The police issued warrants.

Charles was detained for questioning regarding financial crimes and the unlawful confinement of Elizabeth.

Melissa was arrested.

Elizabeth remained missing.

Chloe entered protective custody.

For the first time since the stabbing, Claire's room became quiet.

Daniel entered that evening.

"Your vitals look better."

"That's the nicest thing anyone has told me today."

He smiled.

"Low bar."

Claire looked toward the ultrasound.

"Will I ever be able to have children?"

Daniel pulled up a chair.

"We need more tests."

"That's doctor language for maybe."

"Yes."

Claire appreciated the honesty.

"The surgery repaired the immediate damage. The medication exposure complicates things, but I don't want you assuming the worst."

Claire nodded.

Then tears came unexpectedly.

"I already named them."

Daniel remained silent.

"Aiden and Grace."

She laughed softly through tears.

"I didn't even know whether they were boys or girls. Those were just the names in my head."

"You can grieve them."

"Everyone keeps talking about evidence and crimes and Charles and Elizabeth."

Claire looked at him.

"But they were my babies."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

That night, Claire finally allowed herself to mourn without solving anything.

No mysteries.

No husband.

No betrayal.

Only two children she had loved before anyone else knew they existed.

The next morning, Rebecca brought divorce papers.

Adrian had already signed.

Claire stared at his signature.

"No fight?"

"None."

"He agreed to everything?"

"Everything you requested."

Claire signed.

Rebecca closed the folder.

"It won't be final immediately."

"I know."

"Are you sure?"

Claire looked toward the empty vase where nurses had removed Adrian's white roses at her request.

"Yes."

Rebecca nodded.

No judgment.

No lecture.

Just respect.

Two days later, Claire was moved from intensive care to a private recovery suite.

Adrian stopped visiting unless Claire requested him.

He sent no flowers.

No letters.

No dramatic apologies.

He cooperated with police.

Claire heard through Rebecca that he had temporarily resigned as CEO.

He also turned over company records that implicated Charles.

For once, Adrian chose truth even when truth destroyed his own family.

It didn't repair their marriage.

But Claire noticed.

A week after waking, Claire received a visitor.

Chloe.

Claire almost refused.

Then she remembered the bracelet.

The key.

The kidnapping.

"Five minutes."

Chloe entered slowly.

She looked smaller without Adrian beside her.

"I won't stay long."

"Good."

Chloe sat.

"I loved Adrian once."

Claire said nothing.

"I thought I still did when I came back."

There it was.

The confession Claire expected.

"But he didn't love me."

Claire looked at her.

Chloe continued.

"I wanted him to."

"Did you sleep with him?"

"No."

"Did you kiss him?"

Chloe hesitated.

"Once."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"When?"

"Eight months ago."

"Did he kiss you back?"

"For about two seconds."

Claire looked away.

"He stopped it."

That didn't erase it.

But truth mattered.

"He told me he loved you," Chloe said.

Claire laughed quietly.

"He had an interesting way of showing it."

"I know."

Chloe lowered her eyes.

"That night at your house, I wasn't afraid of you."

Claire looked back.

"I was afraid because I saw someone outside the window."

"Who?"

"I thought it was Charles."

"Was it?"

"No."

Chloe reached into her purse.

She removed a photograph.

Security camera footage.

A woman stood beyond the kitchen window.

Gray-streaked dark hair.

Elizabeth.

Claire stared.

"She was there."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell Adrian?"

"I tried."

"Before or after he stabbed me?"

Chloe flinched.

"Before."

Claire remembered the argument.

"I can't keep doing this."

"You won't have to much longer."

They hadn't been discussing an affair.

They had been discussing Charles and Elizabeth.

Claire felt anger at herself for even caring.

She had every reason to misunderstand.

Adrian had manufactured that misunderstanding through months of lies.

Chloe stood.

"There's something else."

Claire waited.

"Elizabeth believes Adrian belongs to her because Charles stole him."

"He's her son."

"Not biologically."

Claire froze.

"What?"

Chloe swallowed.

"Samuel found adoption records."

Claire stared at her.

"Adrian was adopted?"

"Not legally."

"What does that mean?"

"Elizabeth lost a baby shortly before the car accident."

Claire felt cold.

"Then whose child was Adrian?"

Chloe placed another photograph on the table.

A young woman held an infant.

On the back was a name.

MARIA HAYES.

Claire stared.

Hayes.

Daniel Hayes.

Her doctor.

Before she could speak, the door opened.

Daniel entered.

He saw the photograph.

Every trace of color left his face.

"Where did you get that?"

Claire looked from Daniel to the picture.

"You know her."

Daniel closed the door.

"She was my mother."

Claire stopped breathing.

Chloe whispered, "Then Adrian..."

Daniel stared at the infant in his mother's arms.

"My mother told me my baby brother died."

The room went silent.

Then Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Footsteps approached.

Slowly.

A woman's voice called from outside.

"Daniel?"

His face changed.

He knew that voice.

The handle began turning.

And the woman everyone had been searching for stepped through the door.
