Chapter 4 - The Father Who Came Back

Charles Bennett entered without waiting.

At sixty-three, he still possessed the intimidating calm that had made executives fear him for decades.

His silver hair was immaculate.

His charcoal suit looked untouched by travel.

He carried no flowers.

No concern.

Only authority.

Adrian stepped between his father and Claire.

"Get out."

Charles looked at his son.

"Move."

"No."

Claire had seen Adrian challenge business rivals before.

She had never seen him challenge Charles.

Charles's gaze moved toward Claire.

"I'm sorry about the babies."

Claire's blood went cold.

Nobody had told him.

Cole noticed too.

"How did you know Mrs. Bennett was pregnant?"

Charles barely looked at him.

"My son called me."

Adrian's voice sharpened.

"No, I didn't."

Charles looked back at Adrian.

For the first time, his composure slipped.

Only slightly.

But Claire saw it.

Cole stepped closer.

"Mr. Bennett, I'd like you to come with me."

"Am I under arrest?"

"Not presently."

"Then no."

Rebecca smiled without warmth.

"That may change."

Charles looked at Claire.

"You've always surrounded yourself with ambitious people."

Claire stared at him.

"And you've always mistaken control for respect."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Perhaps surprise.

Perhaps irritation.

He turned to Adrian.

"Your wife needs rest."

"My wife needs you away from her."

Claire noticed Adrian still called her his wife.

She didn't correct him.

Not because she had changed her mind.

Because there were larger battles in the room.

Charles walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

"Adrian."

His son didn't respond.

"Chloe Mercer is dangerous."

Claire watched Adrian.

Charles continued.

"Her father filled her head with fantasies before he died."

"Samuel had evidence," Adrian said.

Charles smiled faintly.

"Samuel was a thief."

Cole stepped forward.

"We'll determine that."

Charles left.

Rebecca immediately locked the door.

Claire exhaled.

"He knew."

Adrian nodded.

"He knew about the twins."

Cole's phone rang.

This time the news came from Chloe.

She was awake.

And willing to talk.

Against Daniel's objections, Claire insisted on hearing the interview by secure video.

Chloe appeared bruised and exhausted from another hospital room.

The moment she saw Claire, she began crying.

"I'm sorry."

Claire felt no sympathy yet.

"Start with the truth."

Chloe nodded.

"Your husband and I weren't having an affair."

Claire looked at Adrian.

Chloe continued.

"I knew it looked like one."

"You let it look like one."

"I needed Charles to believe Adrian still trusted me."

Claire frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Charles was watching both of us."

Chloe explained Samuel's discovery.

For years, Charles had used Bennett Development to hide illegal financial transactions.

But Samuel discovered something more personal.

Charles paid private clinics for confidential medical information.

Employees.

Business rivals.

Family.

Adrian.

Claire.

"Why me?"

"Because Charles needed to know whether you could give Adrian an heir."

Claire felt sick.

Adrian's hands curled into fists.

Chloe continued.

"When you became pregnant, someone accessed your clinic records."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"But you had my ultrasound."

Chloe lowered her eyes.

"I took it from your purse."

Adrian stared at her.

"You what?"

"I was trying to confirm Samuel's files."

Claire's anger rose.

"You invaded my house, stole my medical information, and you expect me to believe you were helping?"

"No."

Chloe looked directly at her.

"I expect you to hate me."

That honesty stopped Claire.

"But I didn't hurt your babies."

"Who did?"

"I think Charles ordered someone to."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Melissa?"

Chloe's face changed.

"You know about her?"

Claire answered.

"She ordered my vitamins."

Chloe shook her head.

"Melissa wasn't working for Charles."

"Then who?"

"Your mother."

Adrian stared at her.

"My mother is dead."

Chloe swallowed.

"That's what Charles told you."

Silence.

Claire looked at Adrian.

He seemed unable to process the words.

Chloe continued.

"Samuel found payments made to a private care facility under another name. Elizabeth Bennett lived there for seventeen years after the accident."

Adrian gripped the table.

"That's impossible."

"She survived."

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

Chloe began crying.

"Samuel found her once. Then Charles moved her."

Adrian turned away.

Claire suddenly understood why the hidden key mattered.

Samuel wasn't merely exposing financial crimes.

He was exposing a family built on manufactured truths.

Chloe wiped her face.

"There's one more thing."

Claire waited.

"The medication in your system wasn't intended to kill you."

"What was it intended to do?"

Chloe hesitated.

"Prevent the pregnancy from continuing."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Claire felt as though someone had removed the air from the room.

"Who gave it to me?"

"Melissa knew."

"Then where is Melissa?"

Nobody answered.

Cole immediately sent officers to locate her.

They found her apartment empty.

Her phone was abandoned.

Her car was missing.

But security footage showed her leaving with a suitcase hours after Claire was hospitalized.

Rebecca asked the obvious question.

"Where would she go?"

Adrian stared at the wall.

"My father's lake house."

Cole left with two officers.

Claire remained behind.

Adrian stood near the window.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then he said, "I should have told you everything."

Claire's voice was tired.

"Yes."

"I thought I could protect you."

"You protected Chloe."

"I thought Charles was watching her."

"And me?"

Adrian looked at her.

"I didn't know."

Claire shook her head.

"You never looked."

That hurt him.

Good.

Some truths should hurt.

He sat across from her.

"I can't ask you to forgive me."

"No."

"I won't."

Claire looked surprised.

Adrian continued.

"I keep wanting to say it was an accident. That I panicked. That you grabbed Chloe and I reacted."

His voice shook.

"But none of those things changes what I did."

Claire listened.

"I hurt you."

His eyes moved toward the ultrasound.

"I destroyed something I didn't even know existed."

Claire's throat tightened.

Adrian swallowed.

"And then I threatened you."

He looked directly at her.

"If you divorce me, I'll sign everything."

Claire said nothing.

"I won't fight you."

For the first time since waking, Claire believed he understood one small part of what accountability meant.

Her phone rang.

Detective Cole.

Rebecca answered on speaker.

"We found Melissa."

Claire straightened.

"Is she alive?"

"Yes."

"Did she talk?"

Cole hesitated.

"She says Charles didn't order the medication."

Adrian frowned.

"Then who did?"

Cole's voice lowered.

"She says the instructions came from someone using Elizabeth Bennett's credentials."

Adrian stood.

"My mother?"

"There's more."

A noise sounded behind Cole.

Then Melissa's frightened voice came through the phone.

"Don't tell Adrian!"

Cole shouted.

The call broke.

Claire stared at the screen.

Seconds later, a text arrived from Cole's number.

A photograph.

Melissa sat inside the lake house.

Behind her was a woman with long gray-streaked dark hair.

Adrian stumbled backward.

He recognized her.

"Mom."

Then another photograph arrived.

The woman held a recent picture of Claire.

On the back, written in red ink, were five words:

SHE CAN NEVER HAVE HIS CHILD.
