Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Door

The door opened.
Rebecca Shaw entered carrying a leather briefcase.
Claire had never been so relieved to see her attorney.
Rebecca was forty-two, composed, sharp-eyed, and famous for making powerful men regret underestimating her.
She looked at Adrian.
Then at Claire.
Then at the ultrasound on the bedside table.
Her expression softened for only a second.
"I came as soon as the hospital called."
Adrian stood.
"Rebecca, this isn't necessary."
"Claire decides what's necessary."
Claire almost smiled.
Rebecca approached the bed.
"What do you need?"
"A divorce."
Rebecca nodded once.
"Then we'll get you one."
Adrian looked stunned by the simplicity of it.
"Three years and that's it?"
Claire stared at him.
"You ended three years in three seconds."
He had no answer.
Rebecca noticed the evidence envelope.
"What's that?"
Claire explained.
The bracelet.
The hidden key.
The phone call.
Rebecca's professional calm changed.
"Who was the caller?"
"I don't know."
Adrian walked toward the window.
"Throw the key away."
Rebecca looked at him.
"Why?"
"It's irrelevant."
"Then you shouldn't care."
Adrian turned.
"I care because Claire nearly died."
Rebecca's voice sharpened.
"At whose hand?"
Silence.
Claire watched Adrian absorb it.
For the first time, he looked less like her husband and more like a defendant.
"Where's Chloe?" Claire asked.
Adrian's shoulders tightened.
"I don't know."
"She hasn't contacted you?"
"No."
"Has police questioned her?"
"They questioned both of us."
"Both?"
Adrian nodded.
Claire felt cold.
"You're not under arrest."
"No."
"Why?"
Adrian looked at Daniel.
The doctor quietly excused himself.
Rebecca stayed.
Adrian finally said, "I told them it was an accident."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"Was it?"
His jaw tightened.
"I never meant to hurt you."
"That's not what I asked."
He looked away.
Claire remembered the second flash of pain.
The fury in his voice.
The threat.
She had spent three unconscious days while everyone else decided what her story would be.
No more.
"I want the police."
Adrian looked at her.
"Claire."
"Now."
Rebecca pulled out her phone.
Adrian crossed the room.
"Please don't do this before you understand everything."
Claire stared at him.
"Then explain everything."
He couldn't.
That was answer enough.
Rebecca contacted Detective Marcus Cole, who had already been assigned to the incident.
He arrived forty minutes later.
Cole was in his fifties, quiet, observant, and unimpressed by Adrian's wealth.
He asked Adrian to wait outside.
Adrian refused at first.
Rebecca stood.
"Leave."
Eventually he did.
Claire told Cole everything she remembered.
She did not minimize it.
She did not protect Adrian.
When she repeated his threat, Cole stopped writing.
"Those exact words?"
"Yes."
"You're certain?"
"I hear them every time I close my eyes."
Cole nodded.
Then Claire told him about the key.
Cole examined the envelope.
"This wasn't documented in the property report."
"The doctor found it among my belongings."
"We'll need to establish chain of custody."
Rebecca folded her arms.
"Can you identify what it opens?"
"Not from looking at it."
Claire remembered the caller.
"Someone knows."
Cole asked about Chloe.
Claire explained their history.
When Adrian was allowed back inside, Cole questioned him separately.
Claire couldn't hear everything from the hallway, but she caught fragments.
"...storage facility..."
"...not mine..."
"...Chloe's father..."
Then voices rose.
Rebecca closed the door.
"What storage facility?"
Claire asked.
Rebecca looked toward her.
"You heard that?"
"Enough."
Before Rebecca could answer, Adrian returned.
Cole had left him looking ten years older.
Claire held up the key.
"Storage facility?"
Adrian stopped.
"Claire."
"Tell me."
He sat slowly.
"Chloe's father died eighteen months ago."
"I know."
"He left her documents."
"What kind?"
"I don't know."
Claire almost laughed.
"You're terrible at lying."
Adrian rubbed his face.
"Her father worked for Bennett Development."
Claire froze.
Bennett Development belonged to Adrian's family.
His father, Charles Bennett, had built the company into a real estate empire.
Adrian had become CEO five years earlier.
"What did Chloe's father do?"
"Accounting."
Claire remembered him vaguely.
Samuel Mercer.
Quiet man.
Always polite.
"Why would an accountant hide a key?"
Adrian looked at the evidence envelope.
"Because he discovered money moving through companies that didn't exist."
Rebecca leaned forward.
"Fraud?"
"Possibly."
"Whose?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Claire understood.
"Your father's."
Adrian looked at her.
"That's what Chloe believed."
Claire's thoughts raced.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't know if it was true."
"Then why buy Chloe jewelry with a hidden key?"
Adrian looked surprised.
"I didn't know the key was inside."
Claire studied him.
For once, she believed him.
"The bracelet was her father's," he explained. "The clasp broke. I had it restored."
Claire remembered the receipt.
"So you lied about buying it."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because every time I mentioned Chloe, we fought."
"Because you lied every time you mentioned Chloe."
He accepted that.
Rebecca interrupted.
"What does the key open?"
Adrian shook his head.
"Samuel had a storage unit downtown."
"Where?"
"I don't know which facility."
Claire looked at Rebecca.
"Find it."
Adrian stood.
"No."
Claire stared at him.
"No?"
"Someone attacked Chloe two weeks ago."
That changed the room.
"What?"
"She didn't tell police because she was afraid."
Claire's anger briefly gave way to confusion.
"Why was she at our house?"
"She believed someone had followed her."
"And you brought her into my home?"
"I was trying to protect her."
The old wound reopened.
Claire's voice became quiet.
"You protected her."
Adrian realized what he had said.
"Claire—"
"You protected her from me too."
"No."
"You put yourself between us."
"Because everything was happening too fast."
"You picked up a knife."
His face tightened.
Claire continued.
"And after you hurt me, you threatened to kill me for touching her."
Adrian's eyes filled.
"I can't undo that."
"No."
Claire looked toward the ultrasound.
"You can't."
He followed her gaze.
His face collapsed again.
Rebecca gently moved the photograph away.
"This conversation is over."
Adrian left without another word.
That afternoon, Claire signed preliminary divorce documents.
Her hand trembled.
Not because she doubted herself.
Because every signature felt like burying something.
That evening, Daniel checked her incision.
"You need to rest."
Claire gave him a tired smile.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"Doctors are repetitive."
She noticed he was avoiding something.
"You said there was something else."
Daniel stopped.
"Earlier. Before Adrian came."
His expression became serious.
Claire's stomach tightened.
"What happened while I was unconscious?"
Daniel pulled the chair closer.
"The injuries caused complications."
"I know about the twins."
"This isn't about them."
Claire waited.
Daniel chose his words carefully.
"During surgery, we discovered evidence that one of the injuries may not have happened during the incident at your house."
Claire stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
"Some internal damage appeared older."
"How much older?"
"Possibly several weeks."
Claire frowned.
She had felt tired recently.
Nauseous.
Occasional pain.
She had assumed pregnancy.
"Could it have affected the babies?"
"Possibly."
Claire's breath caught.
Daniel continued.
"We sent samples for additional testing."
"What kind of testing?"
"Claire, before I tell you, I want confirmation."
"No more people deciding what I can handle."
Daniel nodded reluctantly.
"We found traces of a medication in your blood."
"What medication?"
"A drug that can be dangerous during pregnancy if taken without medical supervision."
Claire stared at him.
"I wasn't taking anything."
"I know."
"How did it get into my blood?"
"That's what we're trying to determine."
Claire felt the room tilt.
Someone had given her something.
Before the stabbing.
Before Chloe came home.
Before everything exploded.
Her phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
One photograph.
Claire opened it.
Her kitchen.
Taken weeks earlier.
She was visible in the background pouring tea.
On the counter sat the vitamins Adrian brought her every morning.
The next message appeared.
DON'T TAKE ANYTHING HE GIVES YOU.
Claire's fingers went cold.
A third message followed.
THE KEY OPENS UNIT 317.
Then a final message.
CHLOE IS ALREADY THERE.
Rebecca stood.
"We're calling Cole."
Claire looked toward the hospital window.
Three floors below, a woman in a beige coat stood beside a black car.
Claire recognized her immediately.
Chloe.
She was staring directly up at Claire's room.
Then Chloe raised something toward the window.
A photograph.
Even from three floors away, Claire recognized the two black circles on it.
An ultrasound.
Her ultrasound.
Claire's phone rang.
Chloe's name appeared.
Claire answered.
Chloe spoke before Claire could say anything.
"Your husband didn't know you were pregnant."
Claire's voice hardened.
"How do you have my ultrasound?"
Chloe looked up at the window.
"Because somebody else did."
Claire stopped breathing.
"Who?"
Chloe turned toward the black car.
The rear passenger door opened.
She whispered:
May you like
"The person who wanted your babies gone."
Then someone pulled Chloe inside.
