Chapter 6 - The Envelope That Changed Everything

The photo stayed on my phone.

I stared at it.

Again.

And again.

Because no matter how many times I looked, the truth refused to change.

It was me.

Three years earlier.

Standing beside my father.

Holding an envelope covered in blood.

The same night everyone told me he died.

My hands started shaking.

I looked at my father.

The man who had spent years pretending he was gone.

The man who had hidden from me.

The man who had protected a secret I apparently carried myself.

"What was inside the envelope?"

My voice barely came out.

Nobody answered.

The silence was unbearable.

Then my father whispered:

"The truth."

I hated those words.

Because everyone used them like the truth was something sacred.

Something beautiful.

But the truth had only destroyed everything I loved.

The truth had taken my wedding.

My fiancé.

My family.

My entire understanding of my own life.

I looked at the people standing around me.

My mother.

My father.

Dominic.

Adrian.

Everyone had pieces of the puzzle.

Everyone except me.

"Open it."

My father looked at me.

"Saraphina..."

"Open it."

My voice became stronger.

"I am tired of being the only person who doesn't know my own story."

The ballroom remained silent.

Then Adrian slowly reached into his folder.

He removed a small envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

The edges were damaged.

My heart started racing before I even touched it.

Because I recognized it.

Not because I remembered.

Because my body did.

My fingers froze.

"Why does this feel familiar?"

My mother covered her mouth.

Because she knew.

She knew before anyone else.

"You sealed this yourself," Adrian said softly.

I looked at him.

"I did what?"

"You made the decision."

I shook my head.

"No."

Adrian looked at my father.

Then at me.

"You were the one who asked us to hide it."

The room disappeared.

A strange pressure filled my head.

A memory tried to break through.

A hallway.

A door.

My father's voice.

"You need to trust us, Saraphina."

Another voice.

My own.

"I don't want to remember."

I grabbed the edge of the table.

My knees weakened.

My mother rushed toward me.

"Saraphina."

I pushed her hand away.

"Don't."

The word hurt her.

But I couldn't stop.

Because suddenly I wasn't just angry.

I was scared.

"What happened to me?"

Nobody answered.

"What happened that made me ask you to erase my memories?"

My father looked like he was about to break.

"You were trying to protect someone."

"Who?"

His eyes moved toward Dominic.

And that answer terrified me.

Dominic noticed.

He stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was low.

"You don't get to put this on me."

My father stared at him.

"You know what happened."

Dominic laughed bitterly.

"You think I'm the only person who made mistakes?"

I looked between them.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Dominic looked at me.

For the first time, I saw something close to guilt.

"I wasn't supposed to fall in love with you."

The words hurt.

Even after everything.

Even after the wedding.

Even after the lies.

They still hurt.

I swallowed.

"What?"

Dominic looked away.

"When I first met you, I knew exactly who you were."

I felt sick.

"You knew my identity?"

"Yes."

"You knew about my family?"

"Yes."

The room became silent.

"Then everything was a lie."

His jaw tightened.

"At first."

That answer was worse.

"At first?"

He looked at me.

"I was supposed to get close to you because of Vale Industries."

My heart cracked.

"But then..."

He stopped.

I waited.

But I didn't want to hear the rest.

"Then I actually loved you."

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because love wasn't supposed to look like this.

Love wasn't supposed to leave someone standing in a destroyed wedding dress while their entire life collapsed.

"You loved me?"

I looked at him.

"Then why did you do this?"

His eyes moved to the cake.

To the cameras.

To the guests.

And for the first time...

He looked ashamed.

"Because I thought you betrayed me."

Nobody spoke.

I stared at him.

"Betrayed you?"

Dominic nodded.

"Three years ago, before your father disappeared, I found out someone from Vale Industries was preparing evidence against me."

He looked at the envelope.

"I thought it was you."

My breath caught.

"No."

"I saw your signature."

My father's expression changed.

Because he knew what Dominic was talking about.

"You signed documents transferring information."

I shook my head.

"I don't remember."

"I know."

Dominic's voice softened.

"That's the problem."

Adrian stepped between us.

"There is something everyone needs to understand."

He opened another file.

"The envelope was not evidence against Dominic."

Everyone turned.

"It was evidence against someone else."

The ballroom became silent.

"Someone who was controlling both families."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

Adrian placed a document on the screen.

A company name appeared.

A company I had never heard of.

But beneath it was a familiar symbol.

A symbol connected to my father's company.

And Dominic's empire.

"What is that?"

Adrian looked at me.

"The organization that funded both of your families."

My father closed his eyes.

"Adrian..."

"No more hiding."

Adrian continued.

"They created the conflict between Vale Industries and Blackwood Holdings."

The guests stared.

"The rivalry."

"The lawsuits."

"The business war."

All of it.

A plan.

My entire life had been built around a war that was never real.

"Why?"

I asked.

Adrian looked at me.

"Because they wanted control."

"Of what?"

He hesitated.

Then answered:

"You."

A chill moved through me.

"Me?"

My father stepped forward.

"You were the only person who could inherit everything."

I looked confused.

"Everything?"

Adrian nodded.

"Your father created a private trust before his disappearance."

He placed another document in front of me.

"Not just money."

I looked down.

My name was written there.

"The trust controls the original ownership of Vale Industries."

My eyes widened.

"That isn't possible."

"It is."

Adrian looked at Dominic.

"And Dominic knew."

I turned.

Dominic didn't deny it.

"You knew I owned everything?"

His silence was enough.

I felt betrayed all over again.

"You were going to marry me to take control."

His face changed.

"No."

"Then what?"

He looked at me.

"I was trying to protect you."

I shook my head.

"By destroying me?"

He had no answer.

The ballroom started emptying.

Guests left quietly.

The cameras continued recording.

The world outside would soon know everything.

The perfect Blackwood wedding was gone.

But inside that ballroom, the real war had only begun.

My mother took my hand.

"Saraphina, there is one more thing."

I looked at her.

"What?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"The night your father disappeared..."

She stopped.

I waited.

"You weren't just holding the envelope."

My heart started beating faster.

"What else?"

She looked terrified.

"You were running from someone."

"Who?"

My father answered.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"The person who tried to kill your father."

The room went silent.

"Who?"

My father looked toward the entrance.

And his face turned completely pale.

Because someone was standing there.

Someone nobody noticed arrive.

Someone holding the original envelope.

The real one.

And the person said:

"Don't open that."

A pause.

May you like

Then:

"Because it contains the proof that Saraphina Vale was never the victim."
