Chapter 4 - The Secret My Parents Buried

The man standing at the entrance of the ballroom didn’t look like someone who came to ruin a wedding.
He looked like someone who came to reveal a funeral.
He held a black folder in his hand.
My name was written across the front.
SARAPHINA VALE.
The letters seemed to burn into my eyes.
Nobody moved.
Not the guests.
Not Dominic.
Not even my parents.
The man walked closer.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
Like he had been waiting years for this moment.
"My name is Adrian Cross."
He stopped in front of me.
"And I was the person who helped your parents hide the truth."
My stomach dropped.
I looked at my mother.
Then my father.
Neither of them denied it.
That hurt more than any confession.
Because silence was always the loudest answer.
I stepped away from everyone.
My wedding dress brushed against the floor.
The ruined cake sat behind me.
A symbol of everything that had fallen apart in one night.
"Someone tell me what is happening."
My voice shook.
Nobody answered.
So I looked at Adrian.
"You said you helped them hide something."
He nodded.
"Yes."
"What?"
His eyes moved toward Dominic.
Then back to me.
"The reason your father disappeared."
A cold feeling spread through my body.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
I looked around the ballroom.
"My mother disappeared."
"My father disappeared."
"Now you're telling me there was a reason?"
Adrian opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Records.
Evidence.
"I was your father's attorney."
My father looked down.
"Adrian..."
"No."
Adrian interrupted.
"She deserves the truth."
The way he said it made everyone uncomfortable.
Because he wasn't asking permission.
He was done protecting people.
Three years earlier, everyone believed Elias Vale had died in a car accident.
That was the official story.
A dangerous mountain road.
A vehicle failure.
A tragic ending.
But Adrian placed a photograph on the table.
A picture of my father's car.
Except there was something different.
A small mark near the back wheel.
"What is that?"
I asked.
"Evidence."
Adrian looked at me.
"That accident was not an accident."
The ballroom erupted.
People whispered.
Phones appeared.
Cameras started recording.
Dominic immediately turned.
"Everyone leaves."
Nobody listened.
Because nobody wanted to leave anymore.
They wanted answers.
Adrian continued.
"Your father discovered that Blackwood Holdings had been moving illegal funds through several companies."
My eyes moved toward Dominic.
The same truth.
The same secret.
The same monster hiding behind a perfect image.
Dominic shook his head.
"He's lying."
Adrian ignored him.
"Your mother discovered the same thing."
My mother closed her eyes.
I saw tears forming.
"She tried to expose Dominic."
My fingers went cold.
"Then why didn't she?"
Nobody answered.
Then my mother finally spoke.
"Because he found out first."
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
My mother looked broken.
Not like a woman hiding a secret.
Like a woman who had been carrying a nightmare.
"The night your father disappeared..."
She swallowed.
"I received a message."
My voice became quieter.
"From who?"
She looked at Dominic.
"From him."
The entire ballroom turned.
Dominic didn't move.
For a second, he looked like the man everyone knew.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
Then the cracks appeared.
"You can't prove that."
My mother looked at Adrian.
He opened another document.
A printed message.
A phone record.
A timestamp.
My heart raced.
Because suddenly I realized something.
My mother had not stayed silent because she didn't care.
She stayed silent because she was afraid.
"I don't understand."
I looked at my parents.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
My father stepped forward.
"Because you were the target."
Those words stopped me.
"The target?"
My father nodded slowly.
"When Dominic realized your mother had the evidence, he didn't just want to destroy us."
He looked at me.
"He wanted control of everything."
A horrible realization entered my mind.
"The company."
My father nodded.
"The company."
"My inheritance."
"Your inheritance."
I looked at Dominic.
The man I was supposed to marry.
The man who held my hand.
The man who told me I was his future.
"You came into my life because of my family."
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
I saw the truth.
"You never loved me."
Dominic's expression hardened.
"That's not true."
"Then what was I?"
I laughed bitterly.
"A business deal?"
His silence answered.
I thought the worst pain would be discovering Dominic betrayed me.
I was wrong.
The worst pain was realizing how carefully everything had been planned.
Every dinner.
Every vacation.
Every promise.
Every moment I thought was love.
Maybe it had always been strategy.
Maybe I was never the woman he wanted.
Maybe I was just the final piece he needed.
Dominic stepped closer.
"Saraphina, listen to me."
I moved away.
"No."
His eyes narrowed.
"You don't understand what your parents did."
Again.
That sentence.
Everyone kept saying it.
You don't understand.
You don't know the truth.
You were protected.
You were lied to.
But nobody ever asked me what I wanted.
Nobody ever trusted me with my own life.
"Then tell me."
I looked directly at him.
"For once, tell me everything."
Dominic said nothing.
Because he couldn't.
Adrian placed one final document in front of me.
"This is the original ownership agreement of Vale Industries."
I looked down.
My father's signature.
My mother's signature.
And another name.
A name I didn't recognize.
"Who is this?"
Adrian hesitated.
That hesitation made my heart beat faster.
"Someone who was involved from the beginning."
"Who?"
Before he answered, Dominic interrupted.
"Enough."
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Desperate.
"Adrian, you don't know what you're doing."
Adrian smiled slightly.
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
Dominic looked at my father.
"You told her?"
My father didn't respond.
Dominic laughed.
A quiet, broken laugh.
"You really think she will forgive you?"
I looked at my father.
"What is he talking about?"
My father's face became pale.
"Saraphina..."
I stepped back.
"No."
I shook my head.
"Not another secret."
My mother reached for me.
But I moved away.
"I need the truth."
Adrian looked at me.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
"Your parents didn't hide your mother’s disappearance from you."
He paused.
"They hid what happened the night she disappeared."
My heart stopped.
"What happened?"
Adrian looked at Dominic.
Then at my parents.
"Because the person who caused your mother's disappearance..."
The ballroom became completely silent.
My hands trembled.
"Was not Dominic."
I looked confused.
"What?"
Adrian lowered his voice.
"It was someone closer."
My father closed his eyes.
My mother started crying.
And Dominic looked at the ballroom doors.
Like he already knew who was coming.
A second later, every phone in the room received the same notification.
Everyone looked down.
Including me.
A message appeared on my screen.
One sentence.
One name.
May you like
The person who destroyed my family was not Dominic Blackwood.
It was Saraphina Vale.
