Chapter 2 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The ballroom went silent.
Not the quiet of a wedding.
Not the quiet of people waiting for a speech.
This was the silence of people witnessing something impossible.
I stood on the stage with the microphone in my hand, my wedding dress ruined, my face still covered with traces of frosting, and three hundred guests staring at the ballroom entrance.
Because standing there was the one person who should never have been able to walk through those doors.
My father.
Elias Vale.
The man everyone believed had died three years earlier.
My fingers tightened around the microphone.
I forgot how to breathe.
For a moment, I wondered if my mind was creating something impossible because of the shock.
Maybe I was imagining him.
Maybe the humiliation had finally broken me.
But then he moved.
One slow step forward.
Then another.
And every step proved the truth.
My father was alive.
I remembered the day they told me he was gone.
I remembered the phone call.
The hospital.
The cold hallway.
The doctor who avoided looking into my eyes.
The words that destroyed my entire world.
"We're sorry, Ms. Vale."
I remembered holding his watch in my hands after they gave me his belongings.
I remembered believing I would never hear his voice again.
For three years, I carried that pain everywhere.
And now he was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
"Saraphina."
My name left his mouth softly.
The microphone almost slipped from my hand.
"Dad?"
The word came out as a whisper.
The entire room heard it.
Dominic didn't move.
He looked like someone had taken away the ground beneath his feet.
Because he wasn't looking at my father with surprise.
He was looking at him with fear.
Real fear.
And that was when I understood.
Dominic knew.
He had known my father was alive.
My father walked toward the center of the ballroom.
The guests moved aside.
Nobody knew what to do.
Nobody knew what questions to ask.
A man who had been declared dead had just appeared at his daughter's wedding.
And somehow, the most powerful man in the room looked terrified.
"Dad..." I whispered.
My voice shook.
"Where have you been?"
He looked at me.
His eyes filled with guilt.
"I tried to come back sooner."
Those words hurt more than I expected.
Tried.
Not couldn't.
Tried.
I stared at him.
"Why didn't you?"
Before he could answer, Dominic stepped forward.
"Enough."
His voice was sharp.
Commanding.
The same voice he used when ordering employees around.
But this time, nobody listened.
My father turned toward him.
And smiled sadly.
"Still trying to control every room you enter, Dominic?"
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
They knew something was happening.
Something much bigger than a ruined wedding.
Dominic's jaw tightened.
"You shouldn't be here."
My father looked around.
At the guests.
At the cameras.
At the microphone in my hand.
"Actually, Dominic..."
He glanced at me.
"I think I arrived exactly when I was supposed to."
I wanted answers.
I needed answers.
But before I could ask anything, Dominic moved closer to me.
"Give me the microphone."
I looked at him.
The man who had promised me forever.
The man who had destroyed me in front of everyone.
The man who had been hiding my father's survival.
"No."
The answer surprised even me.
His eyes narrowed.
"Saraphina."
"No."
I stepped away.
"You don't get to tell me what to do anymore."
For the first time in our relationship, I saw something change in him.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
Because he realized something.
The woman standing in front of him was not the same woman he had walked away from a few minutes earlier.
I had lost my wedding.
I had lost my trust.
I had lost the future I thought I was building.
But I had found something else.
The truth.
And I was done protecting his lies.
I lifted the microphone.
"Three years ago, my father supposedly died."
The room became silent again.
"But before he disappeared, he owned one of the most successful companies in this country."
I looked at Dominic.
"And after he died, that company somehow ended up controlled by my future husband."
People started looking at Dominic.
His expression hardened.
"Be careful."
It was a warning.
Not a request.
I continued.
"Because I found the documents."
A woman in the crowd gasped.
Someone whispered.
"What documents?"
I looked toward the screen behind the stage.
The same screen that had displayed our wedding photos.
The same screen that had shown our love story.
Tonight, it would show something else.
"Everything Dominic thought nobody would ever see."
The lights dimmed.
Dominic turned sharply.
"What are you doing?"
I ignored him.
My father's eyes met mine.
And I saw something I had not seen in years.
Pride.
The projector behind me turned on.
The first image appeared.
A financial document.
A company transfer.
A signature.
Dominic's signature.
The guests leaned forward.
Then another document appeared.
And another.
Whispers grew louder.
"This can't be real."
"Is that his name?"
"What happened to Vale Industries?"
Dominic walked toward the stage.
"Turn it off."
Nobody moved.
"Turn it off!"
His voice exploded through the ballroom.
The same man who had controlled boardrooms and business meetings was now losing control in front of everyone.
I looked at him.
"You spent years building an empire on my family's name."
I clicked to the next file.
"But you forgot one thing."
The image changed.
A hidden account.
A series of transfers.
Millions of dollars moved through companies nobody had heard of.
Dominic stopped.
Because he knew what was coming.
My father stepped beside me.
"He didn't steal your company, Saraphina."
His voice was calm.
"He stole your inheritance."
The room erupted.
I turned toward my father.
"What are you saying?"
He looked at Dominic.
"I found out what he was doing before my accident."
Accident.
Not death.
My heart stopped.
"What accident?"
My father hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
Because I knew him.
My father had always been honest.
But now he looked afraid.
"Not here."
I stepped closer.
"No."
My voice shook.
"Not after everything."
The ballroom watched us.
"I spent three years thinking you were dead."
My father's expression broke.
"I'm sorry."
"No."
I shook my head.
"I need the truth."
Dominic laughed quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
A cold smile appeared on his face.
"You really think he came back to save you?"
The room froze.
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Dominic adjusted his jacket.
"Ask your father why he disappeared."
My father looked away.
That was enough.
Because suddenly I realized there was another secret.
A secret between the two men.
A secret that started before my wedding.
Before my engagement.
Before my father's disappearance.
Dominic leaned toward me.
"You don't know who your father really is."
My blood ran cold.
Security suddenly moved toward the stage.
Not ballroom security.
Dominic's private security.
Four men appeared from the side entrance.
The guests panicked.
Phones came out.
People started recording.
My father stepped in front of me.
"Dominic, don't do this."
Dominic looked at him.
"You should have stayed dead."
The words hit harder than anything else.
The entire ballroom heard them.
My father's face changed.
Not because he was hurt.
Because he knew something was about to happen.
One of the security guards approached Dominic and whispered something.
Dominic listened.
Then his expression changed.
For the first time all night, he looked completely terrified.
"What do you mean it's gone?"
The guard whispered again.
Dominic looked toward me.
Then toward my father.
Then toward the exit.
"What did you do?"
My father said nothing.
Dominic reached into his pocket.
Pulled out his phone.
Looked at the screen.
And suddenly dropped it.
Because whatever he saw had destroyed the last bit of confidence he had left.
I stepped forward.
"What happened?"
Nobody answered.
Then Dominic looked directly at me.
His voice barely came out.
"Saraphina..."
May you like
He swallowed.
"Your mother is alive."
