Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind The Disappearance

"Your mother is alive."

Those four words destroyed the last piece of reality I thought I had.

I stared at Dominic.

At the man who had just humiliated me.

At the man who had lied to me for years.

But this time, he wasn’t smiling.

He wasn’t controlling the room.

He wasn’t pretending.

He looked terrified.

My fingers tightened around the microphone.

"What did you say?"

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Three hundred guests watched the most powerful family in the city collapse in front of them.

Dominic looked away first.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Dominic Blackwood never looked away.

Not from investors.

Not from reporters.

Not from enemies.

But he couldn’t look at me.

"Your mother is alive," he repeated.

My chest tightened.

"No."

The word came out before I could stop it.

"No, she isn't."

My father looked down.

And that was when I knew.

He knew.

My mother had died when I was twelve.

At least, that was what I believed.

I remembered the funeral.

I remembered the black dress my father bought me because he said I needed to be strong.

I remembered holding onto his hand while strangers told me how sorry they were.

I remembered looking at the photograph beside the flowers.

My mother's smile.

Her favorite necklace.

The woman who had taught me how to dance in our kitchen.

The woman who stayed awake with me whenever I was sick.

Gone.

That was the story I grew up with.

But now my father stood in front of me.

Alive.

My mother was alive.

And suddenly, I wondered how much of my entire life had been built on a lie.

I lowered the microphone.

"Someone explain this."

My voice cracked.

Nobody answered.

Then my father stepped forward.

"Saraphina..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Not another secret."

The ballroom remained silent.

"I lost my mother."

My eyes filled with tears.

"I lost my father."

I looked at him.

"I spent years grieving people who were apparently never gone."

My father looked like every word was cutting him.

"I never wanted you to suffer."

"Then why did I?"

The question stayed in the air.

And for the first time in my life, I saw my father unable to answer me.

Dominic moved closer.

His security team remained nearby.

Waiting.

Watching.

But now nobody cared about them.

Because the story had changed.

This was no longer about a wedding.

This was about decades of secrets.

"I can explain," Dominic said.

I looked at him.

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"You?"

He stopped.

"You are the reason I need explanations."

His face hardened.

"You don't understand what your father did."

"My father?"

I turned toward him.

"You destroyed my family's company."

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A reaction.

A confirmation.

"You know it's true."

Dominic looked around the ballroom.

At the cameras.

At the guests.

Then back at me.

"You think I'm the villain because you only know half the story."

"Then tell me the other half."

Silence.

A dangerous silence.

Because Dominic had an answer.

But he was afraid to say it.

My father stepped between us.

"Don't listen to him."

Dominic smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

"Of course."

He looked at my father.

"After all, you have been hiding the truth for three years."

My father’s face changed.

"You don't get to talk about hiding."

"Why?"

Dominic took a step forward.

"Because you know exactly why your wife disappeared."

The room froze.

My heart stopped.

"My mother didn't disappear."

I looked at my father.

"Did she?"

He didn't answer.

And that silence became the answer.

I walked away from the stage.

Slowly.

My wedding dress dragged across the marble floor.

The same dress I had imagined wearing while walking toward a future with the man I loved.

Now it felt like a costume.

A costume for a life that never existed.

I reached the corner of the ballroom.

My father's voice followed.

"Saraphina, please."

I stopped.

But I didn't turn around.

"Please what?"

He was quiet.

"Please understand."

I closed my eyes.

"No."

I turned around.

"I spent three years understanding everyone except myself."

The pain on his face was real.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because I wanted to hate him.

I wanted him to be a monster.

It would have been easier.

But my father looked like a broken man.

A man who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

"What happened to Mom?"

His eyes moved toward Dominic.

Then back to me.

"Your mother discovered something."

"What?"

"Something about Blackwood Holdings."

Dominic immediately interrupted.

"Stop."

My father ignored him.

"She found out Dominic wasn't building his empire legally."

The guests began whispering again.

I looked at Dominic.

"You knew?"

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

My father continued.

"Your mother wanted to expose him."

Dominic's expression became darker.

"Don't rewrite history."

My father looked at him.

"She found the accounts."

My breath caught.

The same accounts.

The ones I discovered.

The missing money.

The hidden transfers.

The secrets.

"She was going to report everything."

My father looked at me.

"And then she vanished."

A cold feeling moved through my body.

"Are you saying Dominic..."

"No."

My father interrupted quickly.

"Not everything is as simple as you think."

That answer terrified me.

Because I knew what it meant.

There was something bigger.

Something worse.

The ballroom doors suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman entered.

She was older.

Elegant.

Wearing a dark coat over a simple dress.

Her blonde hair was shorter than I remembered.

But her eyes...

Her eyes were the same.

My heart stopped.

The entire room disappeared.

Because I knew those eyes.

Even after twelve years.

Even after believing I would never see them again.

"Mom?"

The woman froze.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Saraphina."

My knees almost gave out.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

My mother walked toward me.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she was afraid I would disappear.

"I wanted to come sooner."

I stared at her.

"You were alive."

She cried.

"I know."

"You were alive this entire time."

Her face broke.

"I was trying to protect you."

I stepped back.

"Protect me?"

My voice became louder.

"From what?"

Nobody answered.

Then my mother looked at Dominic.

And fear appeared on her face.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Saraphina..."

She grabbed my hand.

"You need to leave."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

Her fingers tightened around mine.

"Because he already knows I'm here."

Dominic suddenly turned toward the entrance.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And all the color disappeared from his face.

"What happened?"

One of his security guards whispered something.

Dominic's eyes moved toward my mother.

Then toward me.

The room became completely silent.

Because whoever was calling him had just changed everything.

Dominic answered.

Listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

"He's here."

My blood went cold.

"Who?"

Dominic lowered the phone.

And behind him, the ballroom doors opened again.

A man stepped inside.

A man carrying a folder with my name written on it.

May you like

And he said one sentence:

"Saraphina Vale, you need to know what your parents did to you."
