Chapter 7 - The Letter That Exposed My Son's Marriage

Daniel was still holding the letter.

But he wasn't reading it anymore.

He was staring at Vanessa.

Like he was looking at a stranger.

A woman he had married only hours before.

A woman he thought he knew.

I watched my son carefully.

The boy who once held my hand crossing the street.

The teenager who cried when his father died.

The man who promised me he would always protect our family.

Now he stood in the middle of his wedding reception, holding a letter from the father he barely remembered.

A letter that had changed everything.

"Daniel."

Vanessa's voice was softer now.

Not confident.

Not commanding.

Almost afraid.

He didn't look at her.

"What did my father write?"

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Daniel slowly lowered the paper.

His eyes were full of confusion.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"Tell you what?"

He laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

"Don't do that."

Her expression changed.

"Daniel..."

"Don't pretend you don't know."

He looked down at the letter again.

Then at me.

"My father knew."

I stepped closer.

"Knew what?"

Daniel swallowed.

"He knew someone would try to use me."

The words hurt.

Because I realized my husband had seen something I didn't.

Something happening right in front of me.

Thomas stood nearby, silent.

Richard looked down.

Even Claire seemed to understand the weight of those words.

I looked at the letter.

"Let me see it."

Daniel hesitated.

Then handed it to me.

I read my husband's handwriting.

The same handwriting that had written me love letters.

The same handwriting that had signed birthday cards.

The same handwriting that now carried a warning.

Margaret,

If this letter is being opened, it means someone has tried to take control of what belongs to you.

Do not trust anyone who tells you they are doing this for Daniel.

My son is kind.

That is his greatest strength.

But it is also the easiest way to manipulate him.

My eyes stopped.

I had to force myself to continue.

The person who comes closest to Daniel is the person who can hurt him the most.

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

Daniel looked at me.

"What else?"

I kept reading.

I know my son will want to believe the best in people.

I know he will defend those he loves.

But if Vanessa Bennett is involved...

I stopped.

The name sat there.

Clear.

Impossible to misunderstand.

Daniel saw it.

His face changed.

"No."

A whisper.

Not anger.

Denial.

I continued.

Then Daniel must know the truth before he signs away his future.

The future.

Not just the estate.

His future.

I lowered the paper.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"How did my father know your name?"

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

She looked tired now.

Not powerful.

Not in control.

"Daniel, you need to understand the situation."

He faced her.

"You knew."

Evelyn said nothing.

"You knew about Vanessa."

Still nothing.

"You knew about the estate."

Her silence became an answer.

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't understand."

I looked at him.

"Your father spent his final days investigating people around him."

Daniel looked at Thomas.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"Because your father believed you were being protected."

Daniel looked hurt.

"Protected from what?"

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

"From making a decision based on love instead of truth."

The sentence hit everyone.

Vanessa stepped backward.

"You are all blaming me."

Her voice became louder.

"After everything I've done?"

I looked at her.

"What have you done?"

She stared at me.

"I loved Daniel."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because even he wasn't sure anymore.

Vanessa continued.

"I gave him a family."

I almost whispered:

"No."

She looked at me.

"You gave him a plan."

Her expression hardened.

"You think you're better than everyone because you built something."

I shook my head.

"No."

I looked around the room.

"That was never the problem."

"Then what is?"

"The problem is that you looked at my home and saw an opportunity."

Silence.

Vanessa looked away.

That was the closest thing to an admission.

Then something unexpected happened.

Daniel walked away from her.

Only a few steps.

But everyone noticed.

The distance between them suddenly looked enormous.

"Daniel."

She reached for him.

He stepped back.

"Don't."

One word.

But it broke something.

The guests watched.

The bride.

The groom.

The mother.

The secret daughter.

The hidden documents.

Everything that had been buried was standing in the open.

Then Richard's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"Who is it?"

I asked.

He didn't answer.

He walked away from the group and answered.

A few seconds later, his face became pale.

"What happened?"

He looked at me.

"Margaret..."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What?"

He held the phone tightly.

"The old house."

Everyone looked at him.

"What about it?"

Richard swallowed.

"Someone broke in."

Thomas immediately stepped forward.

"When?"

Richard looked at the time.

"Ten minutes ago."

Claire frowned.

"Impossible."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

She hesitated.

"Because nobody knows where that house is."

The room went quiet.

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

Then at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And I knew.

Someone knew.

Someone had known about the hidden documents.

Someone had known we were going there.

Thomas moved closer.

"Margaret, we need to leave now."

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

"I'm coming."

I looked at him.

For the first time that night, I saw my son making a choice.

Not for someone else.

Not because someone told him what to do.

For himself.

"Let's go."

We rushed out of the ballroom.

The wedding guests remained behind.

The celebration was over.

But the truth was just beginning.

The drive to the old house felt longer than it should have.

Nobody spoke.

Everyone was carrying questions.

Everyone was afraid of the answers.

When we arrived, the front door was already open.

I stopped.

My old house.

The place my husband had kept hidden.

The place where he had left the truth.

The door moved slightly in the wind.

Thomas reached for his flashlight.

"Stay behind me."

We stepped inside.

The house was dark.

Dust covered everything.

Nothing had been touched for years.

Until tonight.

A drawer was open.

Papers were scattered across the floor.

Someone had searched the place.

Carefully.

Quickly.

Like they knew exactly what they wanted.

Then I saw it.

On the table.

A single envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not my husband's handwriting.

Someone else's.

I picked it up.

My hands started shaking.

Because underneath my name were four words:

"I know what happened."

May you like

And before anyone could stop me, I opened the envelope...

Inside was a photograph of the night my husband died.
