Chapter 11 - The Secret My Son Was Forced To Carry

The sound of the car door closing came from outside.
Everyone froze.
Nobody expected anyone else to arrive.
Not after midnight.
Not after everything we had uncovered.
Thomas immediately moved toward the window.
"Stay back."
His voice was low.
Serious.
The kind of voice people used when they already knew something was wrong.
Daniel looked at him.
"Who is it?"
Thomas didn't answer.
He moved the curtain slightly.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
"What?"
I asked.
He turned around slowly.
"It's not a stranger."
My heart tightened.
"Who?"
Thomas looked at Daniel.
And that was enough.
Daniel's face turned pale.
"No."
I looked at my son.
"Who is it?"
He didn't answer.
The silence lasted only a few seconds.
But it felt like an eternity.
Then the front door opened.
Slowly.
Nobody had touched it.
Nobody had unlocked it.
Yet it opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Tired.
Carrying a small bag.
I had never seen him before.
But Daniel had.
Because the moment he appeared...
my son stepped backward.
"Dad?"
The word escaped his mouth.
Everyone froze.
I stared at Daniel.
Then at the man.
Then back at Daniel.
"What did you say?"
Daniel looked like he couldn't breathe.
The man standing there looked at him with tears in his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"No, this isn't possible."
I stepped closer.
"Daniel."
He looked at me.
The fear in his eyes was something I had never seen before.
Not since his father died.
"Mom..."
He swallowed.
"I know him."
The man lowered his head.
"My name is Michael."
He looked at me.
"I was your husband's driver."
My heart stopped.
A driver.
The night James died.
The photograph.
The secrets.
Everything connected.
"You were there?"
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
Richard immediately stepped forward.
"Why are you here?"
Michael looked at him.
"You know why."
Richard's face changed.
Thomas noticed.
"You knew he was alive?"
Nobody moved.
I looked at Richard.
Again.
Another secret.
Another lie.
"Richard."
My voice was quiet.
"Answer me."
He looked at me.
"I didn't know he was coming tonight."
"But you knew he existed."
Richard hesitated.
That was enough.
I closed my eyes.
Twelve years.
Twelve years of people knowing things about my life that I didn't.
Twelve years of being treated like someone who couldn't handle the truth.
Michael stepped forward.
"I didn't want to come here."
I looked at him.
"Then why did you?"
He looked at the letter.
The photograph.
The documents.
"Because James asked me to."
The room went silent.
My husband's name still had the power to break me.
Even after all these years.
"What do you mean?"
Michael reached into his bag.
He pulled out a small recording device.
Old.
Scratched.
But carefully protected.
"Your husband gave this to me the night before he died."
I stared.
"The night before?"
He nodded.
"He knew something was going to happen."
Thomas stepped closer.
"Why didn't you come forward?"
Michael looked at the floor.
"Because I was told Margaret would be killed if I spoke."
The air disappeared.
Nobody moved.
"Who told you that?"
Michael looked toward Evelyn.
Then toward Richard.
Then finally...
toward Daniel.
My stomach dropped.
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Michael looked at him sadly.
"I didn't want it to be true either."
I looked at my son.
"Daniel?"
He stepped back.
"I don't know what he's talking about."
Michael walked closer.
"When you were seventeen, your grandmother made you promise something."
Daniel froze.
The room became silent.
I looked at my son.
"What promise?"
He didn't answer.
Michael did.
"She told you that if anyone ever asked about your father's last night, you had to say you were alone with him earlier that evening."
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked down.
A memory returning.
A painful one.
"I was a kid."
His voice was barely audible.
Everyone looked at him.
"I didn't understand."
I stepped closer.
"Daniel."
He looked at me.
Tears were forming in his eyes.
"I thought I was protecting you."
The words hurt.
"Protecting me from what?"
He covered his face.
"I don't remember everything."
Michael nodded.
"Because you were made to forget."
Evelyn suddenly shouted:
"Enough."
Everyone turned.
Her calm mask was gone.
Completely gone.
"You don't know what you're doing."
Michael looked at her.
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
She stared at him.
"You should have stayed away."
Michael smiled sadly.
"I did."
He looked at me.
"For twelve years."
I felt sick.
Twelve years.
Everyone had been carrying pieces of the truth.
Everyone except me.
Michael placed the recording device on the table.
"This contains James' final message."
I looked at it.
"Why didn't I receive it?"
He looked at Richard.
Richard closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
Michael pressed the button.
The room filled with static.
Then my husband's voice appeared.
"Margaret."
My knees almost gave out.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
The recording continued.
"If you are hearing this, then Michael finally decided it was safe."
A pause.
"I need you to forgive him."
I looked at Michael.
Then the recording continued.
"He did not betray me."
The room became still.
"He saved me."
I frowned.
Saved him?
What did that mean?
The recording continued.
"The accident was not an accident."
Nobody breathed.
"I was attacked because I discovered the truth about my own family."
My eyes moved toward Evelyn.
Then Richard.
Then Daniel.
James continued.
"But the person responsible was not who I originally suspected."
A pause.
A long one.
Then:
"The person who planned everything..."
The recording crackled.
Everyone leaned closer.
"...was someone who had access to my son."
Daniel's face changed.
The same words.
The same warning.
Your son.
The recording continued.
"Margaret, if Daniel is standing beside you when you hear this..."
My heart stopped.
"If he has chosen the truth..."
A pause.
"...then he is not the enemy."
I looked at Daniel.
A tear fell from his eyes.
The recording continued.
"But if he is still protecting the person who controlled him..."
The device suddenly made a strange noise.
Static.
Then silence.
Michael hit it.
"No."
He checked it.
"That's impossible."
"What happened?"
Thomas asked.
Michael looked terrified.
"Someone damaged the recording."
Richard stepped forward.
"When?"
Michael looked at him.
"Recently."
Everyone froze.
Because nobody had touched it.
Except...
I looked around the room.
At every person standing there.
Someone had known.
Someone had been close enough.
Then I saw it.
A tiny red light blinking on the old device.
Michael stared.
"Wait."
"What?"
He turned it over.
There was a second recording hidden underneath.
A newer one.
Not James' voice.
Someone else's.
Michael pressed play.
For a few seconds, there was only silence.
Then a voice whispered:
"Margaret..."
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized it immediately.
It was Daniel's voice.
But my son was standing right beside me.
May you like
And the recording said:
"Mom, if you are hearing this, it means I finally remembered what I did that night..."
