Chapter 10 - The Voice That Was Never Supposed To Return

The phone was still against my ear.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody even breathed.

Because the voice on the other side belonged to someone who had been gone for twelve years.

My husband.

James.

I closed my eyes.

For one impossible second, I forgot the old house.

The hidden documents.

The betrayal.

The lies.

I was back in our kitchen.

Back when he would stand behind me while I cooked dinner.

Back when he would whisper:

"Everything will be okay, Margaret."

But this was not a memory.

This was real.

A recording.

A voice.

A message he had left behind.

"Margaret?"

The voice came again.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably him.

I couldn't answer.

My hand covered my mouth.

Daniel looked at me.

"Mom?"

I looked at my son.

The son who had spent the last hour discovering that almost everything he knew was incomplete.

Then I looked back at the phone.

The voice continued.

"If you are listening to this, then I failed."

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

James.

Even now.

Still apologizing.

Still carrying responsibility.

"I need you to listen carefully."

Everyone in the room gathered closer.

Even Evelyn.

Even Vanessa.

Even Richard.

The man who had known.

The man who had hidden.

The man who had been trusted.

The recording continued.

"Richard has information. Thomas has information. But neither of them knows everything."

Richard looked down.

Thomas frowned.

I looked at them.

Neither denied it.

James continued.

"The person who caused this was not outside our family."

The room became colder.

Not outside.

Inside.

My eyes moved slowly.

From Daniel.

To Claire.

To Evelyn.

To Richard.

To Vanessa.

The voice continued.

"The person closest to us is the one who had the most to gain."

I felt my chest tighten.

James had known.

He had known someone was coming for everything.

And he had tried to stop it.

"Margaret, I am sorry I left you with this burden."

I shook my head.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

But everyone heard it.

I didn't want his apology.

I wanted him back.

"I should have told you sooner."

The recording paused.

Then continued.

"There is something I discovered about the estate."

I looked at the documents.

"The estate was never only property."

Thomas looked at Richard.

Richard looked confused.

James continued.

"It contains something that could destroy the people trying to take it."

Silence.

Something hidden.

Something worth killing for.

My hands became cold.

"What is it?"

I whispered.

The recording did not answer.

Instead, James said:

"The final document is hidden where we first promised each other forever."

My heart stopped.

The place where we first promised each other forever.

There was only one place.

The small garden house behind the estate.

The place where James proposed.

The place where we had built our first memories.

The place nobody knew mattered.

Except someone did.

The recording continued.

"But before you find it, you need to know who betrayed you."

Everyone waited.

The next sentence came slowly.

"Margaret..."

A pause.

Then:

"Do not trust Richard."

The room exploded.

Richard stepped back.

"No."

The word came immediately.

Almost automatically.

I looked at him.

For twelve years, I had trusted him.

And now my husband's voice was warning me about him.

Richard shook his head.

"That's not possible."

Thomas looked at him.

"Why?"

Richard looked angry.

"No."

He turned toward me.

"Margaret, you know me."

I stared at him.

The worst part was that I did.

I knew him.

Or I thought I did.

The recording continued.

"If Richard is standing beside you when you hear this..."

Another pause.

"...then he already failed me once."

Richard's face changed.

Like someone had struck him.

Daniel looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Richard didn't answer.

I lowered the phone.

The recording stopped.

Everyone stood frozen.

Then Richard whispered:

"I can explain."

I looked at him.

"Can you?"

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the first time I saw Richard without an answer.

Without a prepared explanation.

Without control.

Evelyn suddenly laughed softly.

Everyone turned.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

It was tired.

"You finally found out."

Richard looked at her.

"What did you do?"

Her eyes moved toward him.

"You were never supposed to let her hear that."

My heart dropped.

"Never supposed to?"

Evelyn looked at me.

"Margaret..."

"No."

I stepped back.

"Do not say my name like you care about me."

Her face hardened.

"You don't understand."

I looked around the room.

Everyone had said those words.

You don't understand.

But I understood now.

I understood that every person who claimed to protect me had taken away my right to choose.

"What happened to my husband?"

The question silenced everyone.

Not the estate.

Not the documents.

Not the money.

The real question.

The one that mattered.

"What happened to James?"

Richard looked away.

Thomas looked down.

Claire closed her eyes.

And Evelyn...

Evelyn said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

Daniel stepped toward her.

"Grandma."

His voice shook.

"Did you know?"

She looked at him.

"I knew something would happen."

"Something?"

He looked broken.

"Mom's husband died."

Evelyn's eyes became cold.

"Your grandfather made mistakes."

I stared at her.

Mistakes.

She called his death a mistake.

"What did you do?"

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw the woman behind the mask.

Not the grandmother.

Not the family member.

The person who had been making decisions for everyone.

"I didn't kill him."

Nobody moved.

The sentence hung there.

Because she had not been accused.

Not yet.

But she had answered anyway.

Richard looked at her.

"You knew."

She turned toward him.

"You knew too."

Richard became pale.

Thomas stepped forward.

"Wait."

He looked between them.

"You were both involved?"

Neither answered.

That was enough.

My entire world shifted again.

Two people.

Two trusted people.

Both connected to the night I lost my husband.

Daniel looked sick.

"My whole life..."

He stopped.

He couldn't finish.

I walked toward him.

For the first time that night, I didn't see the man who betrayed me.

I saw my son.

The boy who lost his father.

The boy who had been lied to too.

"Daniel."

He looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

A tear fell down his face.

"I didn't know."

I believed him.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But enough.

Because pain in someone's eyes was harder to fake than words.

Then Claire suddenly picked up one of the photographs.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at her.

She turned the picture over.

Her face changed.

"What?"

I asked.

She looked at the handwriting on the back.

A note.

One sentence.

Written by James.

Her voice trembled.

"He knew."

"Who?"

She looked at Richard.

Then at Evelyn.

Then at me.

"He knew both of them were involved."

The room froze.

Thomas took the photograph.

"There's more."

He turned it over.

Another sentence was written underneath.

A warning.

A final instruction.

I read it.

And my blood went cold.

"Margaret, if you are reading this, the person who betrayed me is not the only danger."

I looked at the words.

The next line was covered by a torn piece of paper.

Someone had ripped it away.

But beneath the tear, only three words remained.

"Your son..."

May you like

And then, from outside the old house...

a car door slammed shut.
