Chapter 6 - The Daughter Who Was Chosen

The elevator doors opened.

And the woman standing there held a photograph.

Nobody spoke.

Mallory stared at the screen.

Then at the woman.

Then back at the screen.

The image showed the same person.

The same face.

The same eyes.

But that was impossible.

Because the woman in the lobby was someone Mallory had never met.

Yet the photograph in her hand showed her standing beside Mallory's father.

Years ago.

Before he disappeared.

Adrian walked toward the security monitor.

"Who is she?"

Thomas looked away.

And that answer scared Mallory more than anything else.

Because her father had always been the person who told her the truth.

But now, every time someone asked a question, he looked like he was trying to hide from the answer.

The elevator camera zoomed in.

The woman looked directly into the security camera.

Almost like she knew they were watching.

Then she lifted the photograph.

On the back of it was written something.

The security system automatically enhanced the image.

The words became visible.

"Project Guardian."

Adrian froze.

Richard stepped backward.

Victor whispered:

"No..."

Mallory turned.

"You know that name?"

Victor looked at her.

"I hoped I would never hear it again."

Adrian looked at him.

"What is Project Guardian?"

Nobody answered.

Then the elevator doors in the lobby closed.

The woman disappeared.

Mallory looked at the monitor.

"She left."

Adrian immediately turned to security.

"Bring her here."

The guards moved.

But before they reached the elevator, every screen in the building went black.

The hotel security system shut down.

The room became silent.

Thomas looked terrified.

"She did it."

Adrian looked at him.

"Who?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"The person who created Project Guardian."

Mallory felt a chill.

"The woman downstairs?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Adrian.

"Your father."

The words hit the room.

Adrian stared.

"My father is dead."

Thomas nodded.

"That's what everyone was supposed to believe."

Mallory looked at her father.

"What are you saying?"

Thomas walked toward the table.

"The man who created Project Guardian wasn't trying to control people."

Adrian frowned.

"Then what was he trying to do?"

Thomas looked at him.

"He was trying to stop someone else from doing it."

Nobody spoke.

Mallory felt like every answer only created more questions.

Her father continued.

"Your father discovered that powerful people were building a system that could manipulate financial markets, governments, and information."

Adrian looked at the documents.

"And he created another system to fight them."

Thomas nodded.

"Project Guardian."

Victor stepped forward.

"But Richard changed everything."

Everyone looked at him.

Victor continued.

"He turned the system into a weapon."

Richard laughed.

"You people really believe this?"

Adrian looked at him.

"You knew about Guardian."

Richard did not answer.

That was enough.

Adrian's expression became colder.

"You knew."

Richard finally sighed.

"Yes."

The room became still.

Mallory watched Adrian.

This was the moment everything changed.

The billionaire who had spent years believing he controlled his world finally realized he had been living inside someone else's plan.

"Why?" Adrian asked.

Richard looked at him.

"Because your father was going to destroy everything."

Adrian stepped closer.

"You mean expose everything."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

His voice became serious.

"You don't understand what your father discovered."

"What?"

Richard looked at Mallory.

And she immediately felt afraid.

"Your father discovered that Project Guardian needed a final key."

Adrian looked confused.

"What key?"

Richard pointed at Mallory.

"Her."

The room froze.

Mallory felt like the air disappeared.

"No."

Richard continued.

"Your father spent years preparing her."

Thomas immediately moved forward.

"Stop."

Richard ignored him.

"French lessons. Hidden messages. Codes. Patterns."

Mallory shook her head.

"My father taught me because he loved me."

Richard looked at her.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And because he knew you would be the only person who could unlock it."

Mallory felt sick.

She looked at Thomas.

"Is that true?"

Her father didn't answer.

That silence broke something inside her.

"Tell me."

Thomas closed his eyes.

"I wanted to protect you."

"That is not an answer."

Thomas looked at her.

"When you were a child, your father realized someone was watching your family."

Mallory remembered.

The strange phone calls.

The nights her father locked every door.

The way he always checked the windows.

Thomas continued.

"He knew if they ever found the system, they would need you."

"Why me?"

Thomas looked at Adrian.

Then back at her.

"Because your father built the final security layer using something only you knew."

Mallory frowned.

"I don't understand."

Thomas took out an old notebook.

He opened it.

Inside were pages filled with French sentences.

The same sentences Mallory had repeated as a child.

But now she noticed something.

They weren't random.

They were instructions.

Hidden inside ordinary phrases.

Her father's lessons were not lessons.

They were a code.

Adrian looked at the notebook.

"Your father turned language into a password."

Mallory stared.

"He knew nobody would suspect a little girl learning French."

Thomas nodded.

"He knew they would never think the key was hidden in you."

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian's phone vibrated.

Another message.

Unknown sender.

This time it contained a photo.

Mallory looked at the screen.

It showed her father.

Alive.

Standing beside another man.

The other man was younger.

But Adrian recognized him.

His face changed.

"That's..."

Mallory looked at him.

"Who is that?"

Adrian slowly answered:

"My father."

The room went silent.

Two fathers.

One photograph.

A secret that had lasted more than a decade.

Then another message appeared.

"You are looking for the wrong missing people."

Adrian stared.

A second message arrived.

"The person who disappeared was never your father."

Thomas suddenly grabbed the phone.

His face turned pale.

"No."

Mallory looked at him.

"What?"

Thomas stared at the message.

Because he knew exactly what it meant.

"What is it?"

Thomas whispered:

"Your father didn't disappear."

A pause.

"He was taken."

Before anyone could respond, the hotel's main entrance camera turned on.

The screen showed the lobby.

The woman from the photograph was standing there.

But she was not alone.

Someone was standing beside her.

Someone everyone in the room thought had been dead for twelve years.

Adrian stepped closer to the screen.

His face lost all color.

Because the man standing beside the woman looked directly into the camera.

May you like

And smiled.

It was his father.
