Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind The Disappearance

The elevator doors opened.
And a woman stepped out.
Mallory expected someone dangerous.
Someone angry.
Someone coming to silence them.
But the woman standing at the end of the hallway looked nothing like the enemy she imagined.
She looked tired.
Older.
Broken.
But alive.
Adrian stopped breathing.
The woman looked directly at him.
"Adrian."
His face changed.
Not the expression of a billionaire.
Not the expression of a powerful businessman.
The expression of a son seeing a ghost.
"Mom?"
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he was afraid saying it louder would make her disappear.
Nobody moved.
The security guards looked confused.
Richard looked terrified.
Thomas closed his eyes.
Like this was the moment he had been waiting for.
The woman slowly walked closer.
Every step seemed heavier than the last.
Adrian did not move.
He could not.
For years, he had believed the most painful memory of his childhood was losing his mother.
He had built his entire life around that loss.
He became successful because he wanted to prove he could survive.
Because he wanted to prove nobody could take anything from him again.
But now the person he had buried in his mind was standing in front of him.
Alive.
"Why?" Adrian finally asked.
His voice cracked.
"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"
The woman looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Because if you knew I was alive, they would have killed you."
Nobody spoke.
Mallory watched Adrian carefully.
She saw anger.
Pain.
Confusion.
Everything fighting inside him at the same time.
Richard suddenly stepped forward.
"This is enough."
Everyone turned.
The lawyer looked around the room.
His confidence had returned.
"This entire situation is becoming absurd."
The woman looked at him.
And smiled.
A cold smile.
"Still pretending, Richard?"
The lawyer froze.
Adrian noticed.
"What does she mean?"
Richard said nothing.
The woman looked at Adrian.
"Your lawyer was never just your lawyer."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"I know."
The woman looked surprised.
"You know?"
Adrian held up the documents Thomas had given him.
"I know someone has been hiding things from me."
She nodded slowly.
"Then you are finally ready."
She reached into her bag.
She removed a small black notebook.
Old.
Worn.
The cover had scratches across it.
She handed it to Adrian.
"This is what started everything."
Adrian opened it.
Inside were handwritten notes.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Meetings.
And one name appeared over and over.
Richard Hayes.
Adrian looked at the pages.
His hands tightened.
"How long?"
His mother looked away.
"Before you created Blackwood Technologies."
Adrian looked up.
"What?"
She took a breath.
"Your company was built on stolen research."
The room went silent.
Mallory looked at Adrian.
She expected him to deny it.
But he didn't.
Because somewhere deep inside, he already knew.
His entire life had been built on questions.
Why did certain people always seem to know his next move?
Why did competitors appear to predict his decisions?
Why did loyal employees suddenly disappear?
He had always thought those were business problems.
Now he understood.
Someone had been controlling the game.
Richard laughed quietly.
"You actually believe this?"
Adrian turned toward him.
"I believe my mother."
Richard shook his head.
"After twelve years of hiding?"
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"You know exactly why she hid."
Richard became silent.
That silence confirmed everything.
Mallory stepped closer to Thomas.
"You knew all of this?"
Thomas nodded.
"I found out when I was investigating the company."
"What happened to you?"
Thomas looked down.
"I got too close."
Mallory waited.
Thomas continued.
"They wanted me gone."
"And my father?"
Thomas looked at her.
"Your father helped me."
Mallory felt confused.
"My father?"
Thomas nodded.
"Your father was the person who discovered the original documents."
Mallory looked toward Adrian's mother.
She understood.
Everything was connected.
Her father's disappearance.
Adrian's mother's disappearance.
The fake translations.
The hidden documents.
The people in power.
All connected by the same secret.
Adrian closed the notebook.
"Who else knows?"
Nobody answered.
Then his mother looked at Mallory.
"You."
Mallory froze.
"Me?"
The woman nodded.
"Your father didn't just teach you French."
Mallory remembered.
The long nights.
The old books.
The strange phrases her father made her repeat.
She had always thought it was just a language lesson.
"What did he teach me?"
Her mother looked at Thomas.
Thomas reached into his pocket.
He removed a small envelope.
He gave it to Mallory.
Inside was a handwritten note.
She recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her father's handwriting.
The message was short.
"If you are reading this, they found the truth."
Mallory's hands began shaking.
Below the sentence was another line.
"Do not trust the man who says he protected Adrian."
She looked up.
Everyone looked at Richard.
The lawyer's face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Adrian saw it.
"What did you do, Richard?"
The lawyer sighed.
"You don't understand what you're dealing with."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Then explain."
Richard looked around the room.
At the guards.
At Daniel.
At Adrian's mother.
Then finally at Mallory.
"You think this is about money?"
Nobody answered.
Richard continued.
"It's bigger than your company."
Adrian stared at him.
"Who are you working for?"
Richard smiled.
A small, confident smile.
"The person who has been protecting you."
Adrian frowned.
"From what?"
Richard looked toward the window.
Outside, the city lights reflected against the glass.
"From the truth."
Before anyone could react, every screen in the private room turned on.
The television.
The security monitors.
The restaurant displays.
All showing the same image.
A black screen.
Then a message appeared.
Mallory stepped closer.
Words appeared slowly.
"ADRIAN BLACKWOOD."
The room became cold.
Another line appeared.
"YOU FOUND THE WRONG PEOPLE."
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
"BUT YOU FINALLY FOUND HER."
Everyone looked at Adrian's mother.
She became pale.
"No..."
Adrian turned.
"What?"
She whispered:
"They know I'm here."
The lights suddenly went out.
A loud alarm sounded.
Security guards moved instantly.
Mallory heard footsteps outside.
Multiple footsteps.
Coming closer.
Adrian grabbed her arm.
"Stay behind me."
The emergency lights turned red.
The private dining room door shook.
Someone was trying to open it.
Richard slowly smiled.
Because he knew who was outside.
The door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Then it stopped.
A voice came from the other side.
"Adrian..."
Everyone froze.
Because Mallory recognized the voice.
It was the same voice from the video.
The woman who said she never died.
Adrian's mother looked at the door.
And whispered:
May you like
"That isn't possible."
The lock clicked open from the outside.
