Chapter 5 - The Person Behind The Door

The lock clicked open from the outside.
Nobody moved.
For a moment, the entire room held its breath.
The red emergency lights flashed across their faces.
Adrian stood in front of Mallory.
His mother stood behind him.
Thomas looked ready for something he had feared for years.
Richard looked calm.
Too calm.
The door slowly opened.
A man stepped inside.
He was wearing a dark suit.
No weapon.
No mask.
No fear.
Mallory immediately recognized him.
Not because she had met him.
Because she had seen his face before.
On the documents.
On the photographs.
In the hidden records.
The man standing in front of them was the person whose name appeared beside every secret transaction.
Every missing file.
Every destroyed piece of evidence.
"Victor."
Adrian's voice was cold.
The translator looked at him.
"I'm sorry."
Mallory felt confused.
Victor was supposed to be gone.
He was supposed to be running.
Instead, he was standing there.
Walking back into danger.
Adrian took a step forward.
"You disappeared."
Victor nodded.
"Because I needed them to believe I escaped."
Richard looked at him.
"You were supposed to leave."
Victor looked at Richard.
And for the first time, there was anger in his eyes.
"I spent six years protecting your lies."
The room became silent.
Adrian looked between them.
"What is happening?"
Victor slowly closed the door behind him.
"Everything you know about the people around you is wrong."
Richard laughed.
"Don't listen to him."
Victor ignored him.
"He was never trying to protect you."
Adrian looked at Richard.
"Then what was he doing?"
Victor answered quietly.
"Making sure you stayed exactly where he needed you."
The billionaire stared at his lawyer.
The man who had handled his contracts.
His legal battles.
His private affairs.
The person who had been beside him through every major decision.
Richard remained expressionless.
But Mallory noticed something.
His hands were shaking.
Only slightly.
But they were shaking.
Adrian noticed too.
"You knew my mother was alive."
Richard said nothing.
"You knew Thomas survived."
Still nothing.
"You knew Victor was lying."
Richard finally sighed.
"You are looking at this from the wrong direction."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Then show me the right one."
Richard looked at everyone in the room.
"The truth is not that I betrayed you."
He pointed at Adrian.
"The truth is that I saved you."
Nobody spoke.
Adrian almost laughed.
"Saved me?"
Richard nodded.
"From your father."
Mallory felt the room change.
Her father's name had not been mentioned.
Not like this.
Thomas immediately stepped forward.
"Don't."
Richard looked at him.
"Why not? He deserves to know."
Adrian turned.
"What about my father?"
Richard smiled.
A small, cruel smile.
"Your father wasn't the victim you think he was."
Mallory looked at Thomas.
His face had changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
Adrian saw it.
"What is he talking about?"
Thomas looked away.
And that was the first time Mallory realized something.
Her father was hiding something too.
Adrian stepped closer.
"Everyone keeps telling me they protected me."
His voice became louder.
"Everyone keeps saying they had reasons."
He looked around the room.
"But nobody tells me the truth."
Nobody answered.
Then his mother spoke.
"Because the truth destroyed everyone who knew it."
Adrian turned toward her.
"Tell me."
She looked at him.
"You were never supposed to build Blackwood Technologies."
The words hit him.
"What?"
She walked toward the table.
"When you were young, your father discovered a technology project."
Thomas looked down.
"It wasn't just a business project."
His mother continued.
"It was a system."
Adrian frowned.
"A system for what?"
Victor answered.
"Control."
Everyone looked at him.
Victor continued.
"The technology was designed to predict decisions."
Adrian looked confused.
"Predict decisions?"
Victor nodded.
"Markets. Governments. Companies. People."
Mallory slowly understood.
This was bigger than business.
Much bigger.
"Your company wasn't created to sell technology," Victor said.
Adrian stared.
"Then why?"
Victor looked at him.
"It was created because someone wanted access to the world's decisions."
The room went silent.
Richard stepped forward.
"Enough."
Adrian turned.
"Why?"
Richard's expression changed.
Because for the first time, he looked angry.
"You have no idea what happens if this information gets out."
Adrian looked at him.
"People will know the truth?"
Richard shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Mallory.
"People will die."
Nobody spoke.
Mallory felt a chill.
Richard wasn't threatening them.
He sounded afraid.
Victor looked at him.
"You still believe that?"
Richard answered quietly.
"Because I saw what happened the last time someone tried to expose it."
Mallory remembered the note.
Her father's handwriting.
"If you are reading this, they found the truth."
She looked at Thomas.
"What happened twelve years ago?"
Thomas didn't answer immediately.
Then he finally said:
"I found out Richard wasn't working alone."
Adrian looked at him.
"Who else?"
Thomas looked toward the window.
"The person above him."
Victor reached into his pocket.
He removed a small device.
"This contains everything."
Adrian looked at it.
"What is it?"
"Evidence."
Victor placed it on the table.
"Names. Payments. Recordings."
Richard suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
He grabbed the device.
But Adrian was faster.
He caught his arm.
For a moment, the two men stared at each other.
The billionaire.
And the lawyer who had controlled his life.
Richard whispered:
"You don't understand what you are opening."
Adrian released him.
"No."
He took the device.
"I finally do."
He connected it to the room's screen.
Everyone watched.
A file appeared.
DATE: TWELVE YEARS AGO.
Mallory stepped closer.
The first video started.
The screen showed a younger version of Thomas.
Standing in an office.
A man was sitting across from him.
The camera angle did not show the man's face.
But his voice was clear.
"I know you found the documents."
Thomas on the video looked terrified.
"I won't let you use this."
The unknown man laughed.
"You don't have a choice."
The video froze.
Mallory looked at Adrian.
"Who is that?"
Nobody answered.
Then the recording continued.
The unknown man leaned closer to the camera.
And said:
"Your daughter will be useful."
Mallory felt her heart stop.
The room went silent.
Because the unknown man was talking about her.
The video ended.
Adrian immediately looked at Thomas.
"What did he mean?"
Thomas looked broken.
"I tried to keep you away from this."
Mallory stepped back.
"Keep me away from what?"
Thomas looked at her.
"From the people who knew your father trained you for this moment."
Her face changed.
"My father didn't train me."
Thomas said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Mallory looked at the old French lessons.
The strange phrases.
The hidden meanings.
Everything suddenly felt different.
Then Adrian's phone vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
A new message appeared.
Unknown sender.
One sentence.
"Stop searching for the truth."
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
"Or ask Mallory why her father chose her."
Mallory's blood went cold.
Because before anyone could react, the private dining room lights turned on.
And the security monitor showed a live camera feed.
A woman was standing in the hotel lobby.
A woman holding an old photograph.
A woman Mallory had never met.
But Adrian recognized immediately.
Because she was the last person he expected to see alive.
His mother whispered:
May you like
"That's impossible."
The elevator doors opened behind the woman.
